Husband newly diagnosed

Hi all, my husband has recently been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer.  He is in the process of having  scans to determine if the cancer has spread.  His Glesson score was 9. the urologist said he needs the prostate removed and the radiotherapy, but if it has spread they will rethink his treatment.  I am going out of my mind with worry, I think it's because everything is unclear at the moment.  I hope it will get easier when we know if the operation is going ahead.  Lolly.

  • Hi lollypop

So pleased the lovely Brian has responded to you as he has a wealth of first hand knowledge in this area and is a great forum member.  I really just wanted to add my welcome (and could not resist your avatar picture as it used to be my fave lolly (many moons ago!!).  Brian is right when he says the waiting is often the very worst part of a cancer diagnosis and I hope that once the necessary results are through your understanding about what is happening/treatment/ etc will help answer many questions you and your husband will have.  It might well  be worth writing down your questions to take to the next appointment as we found it helped jog our memory (which was often foggy at such times).  Hope you will find the forum a helpful resource. Regards Jules54

  • Hi Jules, my hubby's appointment has come through, he has to go on Thursday to see the urologist.  If the Cancer has spread I don't think they will operate, this is the difficult thing for me.  I suppose I feel that there is a good chance it can be cured if they can. Thank you for your advise about the list, my head is full of questions but I am sure I would forget all of them when we are with the surgeon.  Thanks again, I will keep you updated.  Lolly.

  • Hi gardenlady, my hubby had open, because the Cancer had spread outside the prostrate it was the only option.  He is home, but the pain is awful, he had a morphine epidural before the op which lasted for a little while but now on oral painkillers.  Hopefully he will start to feel better soon.  Thank you  for the info about the results I will definitely ask for a copy.  Regards Lolly

  • Hi Lolly

Good to read that your husband is through the surgery and home (think recovery is helped by being in home surroundings). Am not surprised he still suffering the pain as am sure it was quite an ordeal and it will take time to heal.  Having said that there are many effective 'pain control' regimes that can be put in place if his current tablets are not working fully (my husband had several changes before they found the right dose/combination that worked for him).  Weekends are always difficult but would certainly contact his GP/medical support tomorrow if needs be as he will recover more quickly if his pain is controlled.  Hope when the follow up appointment comes you will be looking at the best possible news. Sending virtual hugs. Regards Jules x

  • Hi Lolly,

Thanks for the update. I bet you are both glad the operation is now behind you. Hope you are able to get the pain under control and that your husband is soon feeling better.

    Take care, best wishes, Brian.

  • Hi Lollypop,  wondering if your husbands more comfortable now and how you are too?  Not easy having your world turned up-side-down.

My hubby found going out and about o.k. with the 'bag' but could not be far from a comfort stop for several weeks after its removal which was inconvenient!!

    Take care, gardenlady.

  • Hi, garden lady, hubby feeling a little better every day. Still very painful.  He has found the top of one of his legs is numb, pins and needles so very uncomfortable.  I thought maybe it is nerve damage but not sure will check with the hospital on Tuesday when he goes for a scan.  We went for a little walk yesterday to the end of the road wich seemed to cheer him up a lot.  Every day brings new challenges but we knew it was going to be a long road.  So whatever "The Cancer" wants to throw at us.   We are ready!!! Thanks for your good wishes it means a lot to me.   Lolly x

  • Hi Lollypop, Glad hubby is feeling a little better.  Numb legs/ thighs does not sound normal post op pain. Could be a trapped nerve but  -  don't wish to scare you both but is your hubby still on DVT post op prevention?  The execise will help with this. Might be a good idea to get this checked out before Tues.

Sorry to be so bossy, just a thought.

    Take care, gardenlady.

  • Hi Lolly

Just wanted to pop onto your thread and wish you both a peaceful weekend.  Hoping that the day to day improvement continues and not surprised your husband felt better for getting a little fresh air.  Alittle exercise a good idea but think like gardenlady has said it would  be worth mentioning new 'numbing' sensation to his medical team and maybe a phone call before the weekend arrives would be a an option pre Tuesday (could alleviate worrying over the weekend too).   Take care both of you.Jules x

  • Hi all, we have been to the hospital today. Catheter is out, hubby feels much better even though he is not in control as yet.  He had an ultrasound scan which showed a small build up of fluid in the groin at the site were most of his pain is.  He will have to wait to speak to urologist tomorrow to see if he needs a drain put in . Hope not but if he does need it he will cope.  Should know results from the tissues and lymph node removal next week..... Fingers crossed.  Lolly x

  • Hi Lolly

Thanks for update and hope appointment tomorrow with consultant will resolve the  fluid retention problem for your husband.  Sounds like he is coping well and no doubt very relieved to get the catheter removed. Hope you will receive best possible news from the results next week.  Virtual fingers will be crossed for you both.  Jules x

  • Hi Lollypop, So glad you have got to the bottom of hubby's pain. Hopfully he'll get sorted tomorrow and things will be more comfortable for him.

The control situation may take several weeks. The pelvic floor exercises help to improve things.  My hubby found drinking coffee and to some extent tea did not help matters.  He is fine  now.

Fingers crossed  for good results next week. Take care, gardenlady.
