Husband newly diagnosed

Hi all, my husband has recently been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer.  He is in the process of having  scans to determine if the cancer has spread.  His Glesson score was 9. the urologist said he needs the prostate removed and the radiotherapy, but if it has spread they will rethink his treatment.  I am going out of my mind with worry, I think it's because everything is unclear at the moment.  I hope it will get easier when we know if the operation is going ahead.  Lolly.

  • Hi Lollypop, hope today went well for your husband and you. Just wanted to share my dad's story with you to hopefully give you some positive vibes... My dad was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that had aready 'escaped' the prostate 15 years ago. They didn't offer him an op to remove it, as it had already spread but there has been lots of progress and changes of direction on how they deal with PC since then and every case is different. He has been looked after extremely well by his medical team (he too was only in his 50s when diagnosed so it was a huge shock to us all) for all these years. Unfortunately recently, the news hasn't been good, BUT that is after 15 years of being pretty damn fine and, although his retirement has been compromised a bit with hospital appointments etc, he really has been well and enjoying his life. Just wanted to let you know that it doesn't always have to be the end of normal life. Keep strong, I know how scary and nerve wracking this all is.

  • Hi Lolly

My hubby never wanted to talk about his illness and when he rarely did it was so very difficult for him to cope with the emotional fall out it caused. This forum was 'heaven sent' in that respect and I will be forever thankful that I had somewhere to 'clear my head' as there are so many understanding and lovely folk who respond. My thoughts are with the two of you as the journey continues.Jules x

  • Hi Lollypop,

Like Jules just wanted to wish you both all the best for tommorow.

Take care, both of you, Brian.

  • Hi all, Hubby had his prostrate removed on Tuesday.  The surgeon said it went well, but as his Cancer was so aggressive we won't know much until the results come back from the lab.  He is ok in himself but in a lot of pain, only to be expected I suppose.  We are looking at this as the start of a long and hopefully successful recovery.

Thanks again everyone for you support over the last few weeks. Lolly x

  • Glad the op went O.K.  Keeping everything crossed for good results. The hospital should give you a hard copy of the histology results if you want the detail, just ask the consultant at follow-up.  Not everybody does . Trying not to let the mind run riot is difficult , but hopefully the only way is up.

Did your hubby have an 'open'  or robotic op?  My hubby had an open op because of the great enlargement.  Post op a morphine pump for pain but was home on oral painkillers 5 days later.

I assume your hubby is now home, I hope he is more comfortable soon, if not I would get it check out.

    Take care, gardenlady.

  • Hi gardenlady, my hubby had open, because the Cancer had spread outside the prostrate it was the only option.  He is home, but the pain is awful, he had a morphine epidural before the op which lasted for a little while but now on oral painkillers.  Hopefully he will start to feel better soon.  Thank you  for the info about the results I will definitely ask for a copy.  Regards Lolly

  • Hi Lolly

Good to read that your husband is through the surgery and home (think recovery is helped by being in home surroundings). Am not surprised he still suffering the pain as am sure it was quite an ordeal and it will take time to heal.  Having said that there are many effective 'pain control' regimes that can be put in place if his current tablets are not working fully (my husband had several changes before they found the right dose/combination that worked for him).  Weekends are always difficult but would certainly contact his GP/medical support tomorrow if needs be as he will recover more quickly if his pain is controlled.  Hope when the follow up appointment comes you will be looking at the best possible news. Sending virtual hugs. Regards Jules x

  • Hi Lolly,

Thanks for the update. I bet you are both glad the operation is now behind you. Hope you are able to get the pain under control and that your husband is soon feeling better.

    Take care, best wishes, Brian.

  • Hi Lollypop,  wondering if your husbands more comfortable now and how you are too?  Not easy having your world turned up-side-down.

My hubby found going out and about o.k. with the 'bag' but could not be far from a comfort stop for several weeks after its removal which was inconvenient!!

    Take care, gardenlady.

  • Hi, garden lady, hubby feeling a little better every day. Still very painful.  He has found the top of one of his legs is numb, pins and needles so very uncomfortable.  I thought maybe it is nerve damage but not sure will check with the hospital on Tuesday when he goes for a scan.  We went for a little walk yesterday to the end of the road wich seemed to cheer him up a lot.  Every day brings new challenges but we knew it was going to be a long road.  So whatever "The Cancer" wants to throw at us.   We are ready!!! Thanks for your good wishes it means a lot to me.   Lolly x
