Post Menopausal Bleeding

I am 65 and had an early menopause at about 45. I have had 3 episodes of some post menopausal bleeding over the last 2 months. It’s been very light, and just been a one off thing each time. I have a cervical smear test booked for the week after next . I’m wondering if I should chat to my GP before that though? Also I feel bloated, but I’m not sure if that’s just psychological!

  • I had my internal scan today. No pain or real discomfort with that and it was done in 10 -15minutes. I then saw the consultant who said I have a polyp but also the lining of my womb is thicker than normal. I’ll need a hysteroscopy within the next week to 10 days. He said the positives are that I have presented to them early on with my symptoms and that I have had 2 vaginal births. The negatives are that I am overweight and that can cause an increase in oestrogen which can increase the thickness of the lining of the womb which can cause cancer. He said I would have a hysterectomy if cancer cells were present. I’m terrified as I heard one of the sonographers say ‘66’ to her colleague and if that was the thickness of  the lining, 66 mm is very, very high! (Might have been another measurement though!)

I feel worse now I think than I did before. I know there will be lots of waiting now which is so hard.

  • Hi WiseOwl. I had virtually the same experience today at my appointment. The scan was l as t week but the results were explained today when I was meant to have a biopsy but they’ve decided a hysteroscopy next week instead. I’ve got a thickened lining plus a polyp. I’m a bit overweight too. They said I could have gas and air for the hysterectomy and/or (?) a local anaesthetic which sounded good to me. I was relieved by the results as I thought at least it’s only one polyp and according to google, just 5% of polyps are cancerous. One step at a time. It’s good to be being looked at by specialists. Sending hugs. I feel exhausted tonight and I’m sure I’ve gone into flight or fight mode in the background on what ifs. Hope everyone else is doing ok?

  • Hi, 8 days after my hysteroscopy and D&C and I’m still waiting for the results. I’m kind if numb at this point. Going on holiday on Monday regardless. Hope everyone is doing well.

  • Hi, it was 2 and a half weeks before I got my results through. Enjoy your holiday

  • Hi all, got appointment for biopsy (l assume) on 23rd July and this is through the cancer pathway, think our Health board's wait times are longer(frustratingly).Had 4 week wait for initial US scan, now an almost 5 week wait for Gynae.Though give my GP her due, she did refere right away as soon as scan results were through. In Scotland the guidelines are 62 days from referral to treatment if cancer. I have a cruise (my first) booked on 7 th September and as it draws closer I am hoping for the best but taking worst case scenario I don't know what will happen there. It's the waiting that's the worst, I just want to know one way or the other so I can get on with my life, whichever path that takes .Hope you manage to enjoy your holidays ladies.

  • Still waiting for a date for hysteroscopy. Was hoping for next week as that was what the doctor hinted at after my internal scan last week. I’m taking some comfort from the fact that a smear test that was done 2 weeks ago has come back as clear. I know that a smear doesn’t test for endometrial cancer, but from what I’ve read, if there isn’t any abnormality in cervix cells then any potential  endometrial cancer would only be stage 1 and treatable with a hysterectomy. I have had quite bad cramps for the last 5 days since my internal scan which I’ve managed with pain killers but the thought of more prodding and poking while everything is still quite tender is worrying me. Hope everyone with holidays booked can enjoy them! I had friends round last night and was able to forget about everything for a few hours…. It did me good!

  • My smear was clear, my biopsy and MRI said stage 1. Histology after Hysterectomy was Stage 3 grade 2a. My treatment plan to prevent it popping up elsewhere is 18 weeks chemo, 25 external beam radio therapy and 4 sessions over 4 weeks of Brachytherapy. It seemed a lot for Adjuvent therapy but when told there could be cancerous cells in my body that cant be seen and it could pop up anywhere in my body at any time, I realised its something that has to be done. You are not alone on this journey, keep going. X

  • And you are not alone either. We’re all here to support you through. We’ve all got this ladies. I know that must sound kind of glib and cliche but I really believe we need to try to stay as positive as we all can be even if we’re not through the diagnoses stages yet. It’s definitely not easy waiting for tests, biopsies etc it seems to take forever to get to the dates and the not knowing is awful but at least we can all try to keep each other uplifted in the mean time. I’ve not told any of my family yet. Only my husband knows at present so I am really appreciating being able to chat with you all. Thank you ladies. Xxx

  • Hello there, hope everyone is doing ok. It is lovely to be able to share here and thanks for your positive words MillekA.

I’ve got my hysteroscopy on Thursday and am dreading and willing it on simultaneously. I’m having a hard time with my children not knowing. Altho I’ve only had minimal spotting I feel like I don’t trust my body to be able to go swimming with my girls and they don’t understand why I don’t want to go. I think the specialist said that my uterus was full of blood when I saw him last Tuesday and it’s made me worry. He might not even have said that but you’re in such a nervous state it’s hard to take it in. He definitely said my lining was thicker than it should be and I’ve got a polyp. I’m wondering if I need to take heavy duty sanitary towels on Thursday. For those who have had hysteroscopy did you need that please? Wiseowl, I do hope you hear about your appointment soon. Thanks again all and sending lots of calming vibes your way. xx

  • Good luck on Thursday Rose Tree. I know what you mean about not taking information in from the doctors. I think I’m going to take my adult daughter with me next time so she can help me remember! I’ve had 2 more people tell me how difficult they found the hysteroscopy so that’s worrying me. I’m also still having mild cramping from the internal scan last Tuesday which is a bit of a concern. I’ve got no temperature or sign of infection though. Urghh -living on my own certainly doesn’t help as I’m overthinking everything! Chin up everyone. Glad of the support on here.

  • Hi there, I had a d&c and a hysteroscopy under GA 9 days ago. I had light bleeding on and off for about 7 days, nothing too heavy. I had mild cramps for about a couple of days but that’s stopped too. Still don’t have any results yet and am going on holiday tomorrow - for a month! No idea what to do except be positive and careful. Good luck with your next few days xx

  •  Good luck for Thursday Rose tree. Don’t know if you are supplied with sanitary wear where you are. I know we are but I’m going to pack a small amount of sanitary towels of my own just incase. Try not to panic about it all please.. Easy for me to say at the minute though :). You’ll be in good hands and best place for instant care. I’ll be thinking of you. My turn isn’t until a  week on Tuesday. Like you I wishing it was sooner but not too.Its a wEire kind of limbo we are in right now but as Mario11 says it maybe not what we are dreading to hear. We’re all behind you. Xx

  • Thanks MillekA.  I hope the time zooms by until your appointment next week. I think you're right about their providing sanitary towels at the hospital but I'll also be taking some too just in case.  It's weird suddenly needing sanitary stuff again.  I'm needing to hide it from my girls as they'll wonder why I'm suddenly wearing pads.  Neither of them have started their periods yet so we have a number of packs of teen pads in the house but I suspect those won't cut it. ;) Sending lots of good luck to youMillekA and everyone else on this thread.  xx

  • I took my own underwear and pads with me. I was glad of them too, the string knickers they gave me were awful! Good luck everyone, we’ve got this xx

  • lol we aren’t going to win any competitions wearing string knickers now are we :D conjures up quite a picture haha. I’ll pack my own. And it is weird to have had to buy sanitary pads after years of missing that aisle in the supermarket.

  • String knickers sound fun Ainberlin.  I'm imagining the sort of thing I keep stopping my 14 year old buying, but I'm guessing it's more like a paperbag tied together! I'll take my own.

Mario, that's really helpful to know what your timings were.  So hard to have a such a wait after the hysteroscopy too.  I may receive the results around my birthday woohoo!  When were you able to go back to work after the hysterectomy?  Mine is a desk job and I work from home, but I guess it would still be difficult to be sitting for long-ish periods. I'm trying to think worst case scenarios for a cancer diagnosis as it helps me feel more prepared.  Good luck everyone and great to be able to chat. xx

  • Hi, good that u look for worst case, so either way ur mindset good..I didn’t even entertain a diagnosis so I was knocked of my feet when the doc at hospital told me.. how stupid was i lol…I was only in hospital for a day, but was a bit more tricky as they started one procedure but hsd to change and open my old caesarian scar due to scar tissue, so took me couple weeks to walk and sleep properly, then couple weeks to get on my feet..my parts went to histology for further checks, got results bk after I think 7/10 days which gave me final stage and grade

  • I had my hysteroscopy a fortnight ago under GA. Afterwards, I was told I had a polyp removed and had thickened Uterus - I wasn’t given measurement. I was told biopsy’s were taken under the two week schedule, but haven’t heard anything yet and am getting so anxious. I am thinking it’s taking the full two weeks because they are double-checking, or the letter has got lost in the post, or I’ve been forgotten. I can’t tell my husband because he isn’t good in these situations.
is anyone here in Essex? Do we get all results by post? What if it’s good news - is that a phone call? Do you get the result in a letter, or an invite to make an appt but you must bring someone with you?

I can’t stop thinking about this.

  • I would presume that the pathology labs doing the screening of bipsies must be under a great deal of pressure as they’re not only dealing with our biopsies but also everyone else’s too including routine requests. Some people have said their results didn’t come back for 4 weeks or more. We're all with you. Deep breathes. With regards to how we will be told I have no idea I’m afraid until I get to that stage. It really is a worrying time for us all I know that but try to do something you enjoy. A walk, a hobby, a movie. Keep your chin up. Remember the advancements in this type of cancer are way better and a lot of women actually survive stage 4 cancers of the womb. Chin up. You got this xxx

  • I asked my consultant why it took so long. She said the process is so intense. They shred the sample to the thinest of layers and every single layer has to be scrutinised. She said they just cant allow for mistakes and this is what takes the time. They have to be exact, no room for mistakes as its someones life. I got my biopsy  results in 2 weeks and my histology results from my hysterectomy was 3 weeks.

  • I phoned the hospital where I’m due to have my hysteroscopy and have left 2 messages but no one has got back to me. I finally got through to them today and asked when I might get a date for the procedure. (The consultant at my scan last week, said I expect I’ll see you next week.) The receptionist said they are waiting for more appointment dates to be released. This has been the longest week! I’m trying to keep busy, but it’s so difficult. And then I’m thinking if the consultant thought it  was something really bad, he’d have requested a more urgent appointment? Honestly… your head runs away with you doesn’t it?! Meanwhile I’ve had 2 people tell me how awful they found the procedure, which is adding to my anxiety!

  • I’m under a hospital in Cambridge … anyone else?
