Newly diagnosed Prostate Cancer at 54

Hi,

i was officially diagnosed yesterday although feel that I have known for some time since the testing process started back in early march. I am 54, I had a PSA score of 7.6 which is quite low except for my age. My MRI score was 5, I had a biopsy and 13 of 19 samples came back as positive. My Gleason score is 3+4. My stage is T3b. I consider myself quite healthy.

They are sending me for a Choline PET to see where else it might lead!

like others I have read lots on the web but not everything is consistent and don't know how much is relevant to my case. Yesterday was the first time that I had the chance to speak to someone, I seem to have spent the last 2 months being sent for tests rather than being able to talk and understand. I have been told that I need to have my prostate removed which is fine and I understand that, what I can't understand is why more tests and not just get on with it

i am keen for any feedback on Choline PET or anyone who has also any symptoms or experience of pain in the bones specifically thighs /pelvis  or feet or anyone with changing bowel habits and constipation or bloated stomach and excessive wind! Although I have mentioned all of these to my doctor and consultant they don't seem that interested. Originally they thought it was limited to my prostate but now with a t3b they seem to think it has gone to my seminal vesicle but I worry that it has gone further.

thanks

steve

  • Hi zinzan there's a few here with prostate cancer, oh and welcome to the forum, most of us are at different stages there's [@woodworm]‍ & [@telemando]‍ & me. We've all had different things done and there is a new one I'm afraid i can't remember his name. Hopefully they will soon be talking to you. Best wishes.

P.s other one is [@Tonybear]‍ hope they get in touch soon.

  • Hi Zinzan.

I am not a doctor. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2010 when I was 56. My PSA was 5.6, Gleason 3+4, stage T2. I had surgery in December 2010; my PSA dropped to <0.1 and has been the same in all subsequent tests.

I was quite surprised to read that your cancer is T3, given that your PSA is below 10. The PET scan is to determine whether it has spread any further. It's very worrying for you, of course, but with such a low PSA I think the chance that it's spread any further is low.

I can understand your desire to get the surgery done and dusted, but the tests will help the surgeons plan the operation and give you the best possible outcome.

  • I am Tonybear and have some experience of prostate cancer and have done quite a lot of research if you like link up with me and tell me your details . Hopefully I can reduce the stress as there is a lot of misunderstanding about that causes totally unecessary worry Best regards Stage T3 means that it can be cured but the cancer has spread slightly outwith your prostate usually into the seminal vesicles IT IS NOT ADVANCED CANCER ! Treatments are varied I went onto hormones and 37 sessions of radiotherapy which I have just completed .

  • Hi my prostate cancer was T3b or regional localised prostate cancer . My Gleason score was 4=5 =9 . I am having 3 years of hormone treatment and have just completed 37 fractions of radiotherapy . I used to work for the NHS and recently started as a medical journalist so may be of help to you /others just ask and good luck . My psa has dropped from 32 to about 1 and should fall to almost zero . You really need to be treated asap !!!

  • Hi to @tonybear,@billygoat and @telemando

thanks for the introduction, found some useful information on here from you guys.

i saw from another post that you has t3b, at what age were you diagnosed? And when did you have your  prostrate removed?

did you have any symptoms of bone pain or fatigue?

i was initially led to believe it was t2c which would have matched the 7.6 PSA but then got a 5 on MRI and have a lowing Gleason. They talked about possibly having radiotherapy after prostrate removed or hormone treatment.

    what were your timescales?

  • Hi zinzan i never put my readings down it might surprise you my psa was 1581 gleason 8 stage 4 T3b it went from the prostate to the lymph nodes then pelvis, spine, ribs and a lung that was over three years ago psa now is 0.8 still got C in lymph nodes and bones if it spreads you can live with it. So don't panic. Best wishes.

P.s I've still got prostate no good operating when it's gone so far.

  • Hey billy, thanks for the post, that makes me feel more positive. Yesterday thought the jump from t2c to t3b was an enormous jump but seeing other people's situation and positive position is making me think differently.

    what was your treatment?

  • Hi I'm on permanent hormone therapy inj every 12 weeks i had 6 sessions of docetaxel cemo to start with as psa rises then more chemo to take it down again,. Also on tablets (hormones) medroxyprogerome, it takes some saying two daily..

  • Thanks for answering, feels like I am asking very personal questions from someone I have never met, thanks for sharing!

At the same time I had blood tests, the doctor told me I had high sugar in my blood and close to diabetes, is there any link you know about with prostate cancer?

  • Hi i don't have problem with sugar but one of the others might have, remember one thing going wrong with your body can change other things, i had three blood tests for the same thing all tests came back different Dr sent me to specialist because she had no idea what to do.
