Muscle & joint pain due to tamoxifen?

Hi everyone I am a cancer survivor I was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2011. I had my lumpectomy in August of that year got the all clear on the 13th September 2011 & started my radiotherapy in November finishing in December. I started my tamoxifen once all of that was over & I must admit I thought I was pretty lucky to have got away with no side effects however about 6 months later I started with muscle aches in my calves & aches in my knee joints & neck then it pretty much spread to all of my body , then I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia but on speaking to various people I think it’s tamoxifen I’ve been on it for 8 years now & I feel like it’s time to come off also the hot flashes are a nightmare. Does anyone else have similar symptoms to mine I love to hear from you

  • Hi Lindy, I have been on tamoxifen for 6 years now and I feel like I'm an old woman. I ache from head to toe and when I touch my muscles they are so painful. The hot sweats don't come at night time anymore but they do in the day time and it's embarrassing at work to have sweat dripping off my nose. The tamoxifen is my safety net and I don't want to let go. I just don't know what to do.

  • Hi dawn

check in with your oncologists & tell them how you feel.I am exactly the same feeling like an old woman like I can hardly move came off tamoxifen & felt a bit better although not 100% because it stays in your system                Take care

  • Hi,  came acrros these posts when googled joint pain and tamoxifen.  Reading so many posts with similar symptoms to my owm makes me more sure the tamoxifen is a factor.  I have aching calf, ankles and wrists/fingers on waking, and when getting up from sitting a while I have a lot of pain in my legs- feel like an old woman!  I walk a lot, swim, use an excercise bike but nothing seems to help.  Hot flushes have reduced over time, which is something at least.

It is a scary thought to stop taking tamoxifen, however one of the breast care nurses said that a break of 4 weeks would be enough to see if side effects improved, so I am going to try this and see how it goes.  At least then either I will know it is the drug or maybe just menopause.

This is not listed as a possible side effect of the drug, but seems like everyone here thinks it does.  The MHRA has a website for reporting side effects of drugs - the yellow card system.  GPs can report when a patient has side effects to a drug, but in reality few have time to do this, so to anyone who feels their side effects are due to tamoxifen please report on the MHRA's yellow card system, and if there are enough instances of this as a side effect it will be recognised
