FIBROIDS

Since November i have been experiencing severe abdominal pains on the lower right hand side that wake me up suddenly in the night, i go to move my body and is pain is even worse (like someone stabbing me and twisting the knife) this lasts for a few minutes the pain then eases off and i drify back to sleep, i then wake up feeling so heavy in my vagina and my stomach feels lumpy. I suffer really bad with bloating  and can  pass off as 6 months pregnant, im forever wearing baggy tops.

i went to see my GP who gave me blood tests, smear & swabs which all came back normal

I called the GP back and asked if they could refer me to a gynaecologist as i was still experiencing the stabbing feeling, they suggested i have an ultrasound done first.

I had an ultrasound and she found that i have multiple fibroids, she seemed rather concerned about one on my right hand side, she said it looked infected but also said that a gynaecologist will explain all to me.

I then received a call from my doctor who said he had sent out an urgent referral to see a gynaecologist and its to see if i have cancer, he was very blunt on the phone, i mentioned that the ultrasound lady said she could see an infection and he said that theres nothing on my notes about an infection - just a complex structure?

Im 40 with no kids my cycle is very normal my only symptoms are the bloated stomach and the abdominal pains

I feel like i cant relax and i am so shocked at how abrupt he was, i kept on asking him questions and all he could say is not to worry.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this

thanks xx

  • Just an update in case anyone is experiencing the same symptoms that I'm having.

I had a call from my consultant today for my MRI results and they have confirmed that it's fibroids, I have a total of 9 fibroids largest one being 13cm

I have a 7cm fibroid which is dead (degenerated) and that is the one that is causing me pain, I will be going to have surgery to remove them all but I have been discharged from the oncology department.

this forum has been a god send to me, so I thank you all and I wish every single one of you good health xx

  • That’s great that you have been discharged from the oncology department & although you have 9 fibroids at least you know what it is and how it can be managed.

I hope your surgery goes smoothly and you have a gentle recovery, don’t do too much too soon afterwards as it is major surgery (mines coming up too!)

    All the best xx

  • Thank you very much, it feels very weird knowing im walking about with 36cm worth of fibroids inside of me.

Good luck with your surgery and thank you for replying to my post.
I do notice that as good as theses forums are a lot of people dont really come back with an update

Take care and i wish you well xx

  • Hi

i have lots of fibroids also, just wondering if anyone else could feel their enlarged uterus when laid flat? I've been referred today for a CT scan to,check, ovaries, uterus and bowel. I can feel I round hard mass in low in my stomach when I lay flat. Bit scary.

    many thanks

  • Hello all.

My husband and I have been trying for the past 2 years.
Last year we got referred to a gynaecologist. I had bloods, transvaginal scans and found that I have cysts on my ovaries. I have had further scans and been waiting to see the gynaecologist to see how to go forward.

About 2 weeks ago I went for another scan because I had started having heavy periods (large clots), prolonged bleeding etc. I was really concerned something was wrong. I had my scan and asked at the time if the cysts were still there. She was a little non descript and said best to talk to my GP.

The gynaecology department then called and cancelled the HSG I was booked in for. This caused me great panic because it feels like one step forward, three steps back. They have booked me in for a consultation with the gynaecologist which is Wednesday. I finally heard back from my GP today because I wanted to know more about my scan - she said there was a growth on my upper uterus. This caused me to be very panicked - she said it could be fibroids or polyops. I now am waiting until Wednesday to see the gynaecologist and get some more information.

To top it off since last Thursday I've had a dull ache and pressure on my left side, fairly low down. And then when walking i can feel the pressure. Also had intercourse with my husband and it felt uncomfortable and lots of pressure. This is the first time I've get like this and now am very concerned.

    anyone else in this situ?

  • Hi...I read ur post and ur symptoms resemble mine.  I was told at 29 I had one fibroid but as it didn't seem to cause me pain it was just left.  Although I suffered with heavy periods, back pain and bad PMT all my life.

About four years or so ago my bleeding became very bad.  I am a postwoman so this caused me problems.  I had to wear tampons, thick pads and cycling shorts under my trousers as nowhere I could go to use loo.  I ended up getting the coil which was so painful to get inserted.  This worked for about two years.  So they told me the coil may shrink my fibroid.  This did not happen.  Ultra sound revealed I have lots of fubroids but I have a 6x6 one on my right hand side which causes me daily back and groin pain, fatigue, bloating.  It wakes me up as I cant get comfy.  I need to pee all.the time even wen I'm empty.  Not good wen out on delivery.

Due to Covid I had to wait 18 months from my hospital referral date.  I am due to go in for an abdominal hysterectomy once they finally send me my date.

It seems that fibroids are an accepted thing for women and we are left to just get on with it even when it causes us pain and can be quite debilitating.

I have never been in hospital or had an op or any anaesthetic so I'm very nervous to undergo a big op my recovery time in 6-8 weeks.  Sorry for rambling but this is huge for me as I am divorced, 49 years and no kids so it's kinda final.

*A wee update*  I received a letter from hospital and thought it would be a date for op.  Unfortunately it was a letter informing me my appointment will be scheduled three months after the letter and will be between six months to a year after that so as late as next October.  Seems such a long time after waiting so long already but I understand there are more serious ops than mine.  Fingers crossed I get it sooner rather than later xx

  • I'm sorry to hear that you're having to deal with all this alone. And you're right.. It seems like many gynaecological conditions such as fibroids are kind of left to linger and for us to deal with for quite some time sadly.

I hope you managed to get a date for your op. And pray things go smoothly for you.

    Take care

  • Hi Lolabunny1986,
I came across your post and felt that me and my husband are going through quite a similar situation..

We seem to be on a similar journey, we started trying for a baby in 2018, last year before the pandemic as it had been two years we went to the gp. Around the same time I found that I had severe pains in my lower belly area, and it was confirmed that I have a number of fibroids.

We have had all the tests and have now been referred for IVF. The IVF clinic are now in the midst of making a decision as to whether the fibroids should be removed before attempting an ivf cycle, although they have confirmed that it's more than likely the next step will be an MRI to check the exact location. One fibroid is 8cm inside the uterus.

I had the dull aching pains when laying down especially at night, and one week before period which I since found is during a progesterone spike after ovulation. Also pain during exercise, and intercourse. The pains are no longer severe which is strange considering the largest fibroid is bigger .. I can now feel and see it when laying flat, especially when I have a full bladder on the morning.

hope you're feeling ok, and I wanted to let you know there's someone out there in a similar situation!

  • Hi there

I have a similar problem.  I have constant back, hip and groin pain and the doc thinks it could be the position of the fibroid pulling on my uterus....its so painful...do u find sleeping difficult too? x

  • Hi

My fibroid has shrunk naturally now that I am in the menopause. I had zoladex implants for maybe 6/7 years previous to this which did shrink it. The pain was awful but wasn't constantly there, but yes I had difficulty sleeping.

Fibroids are awful, especially when they are big.

    Good luck x
