Three weeks of heavy vaginal bleeding, very worried

I am 46 years old. Last year I went for a bladder scan and they found that the lining of the womb was abnormally thick ( but I had not had a period for 70 days). I had a biopsy which was normal but nothing else was done. My periods returned with no problems until May of this year when I had another two month gap. I came on again on the 29th July which was light for a few days but turned into 2-3 inch clots and very heavy. The clots seem to have gone but the bleeding is still heavy three weeks later. It was so bad last weekend that I went to A and E but typically it slowed down while I was there so no scan was done. I have been referred for a scan on the 3rd September but I am so worried I have booked a private one next week. The bleeding is heavy and bright red and I have pain in my right leg. I have previously suffered from ovarian cysts but it never affected my cycle. I only have one ovary now as one was removed due to a cyst. My doctor has fond blood work which was normal and included thyroid and menopause tests which came back normal and not menopausal. He prescribed Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding but I haven’t taken it yet as I want the bleeding to stop on it’s own.

sorry about all the information. I sm meant to be starting my first teaching job in three weeks and a PhD. I am very worried that my symptoms point to something sinister. I hope it is ok to post on here. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone has had similar and it had been ok.

  • Hi there, not a nice situation to be in. But I don't understand why you haven't taken the tranexamic acid. You went to the doc for help and advice, and haven't followed the advice. I say this as a female who some years back had very heavy bleeding, took those tablets, and things settled down. Why wait when you have a possible solution available? Please think about it.

    regards, gamechanger

  • Thank you for replying. The prescription says take for up to four days so I was worried that the bleeding would stop and then start again for the scan. Also I was hoping it would subside on its own and I could stop worrying. You are right, my husband has gone for the prescription. If you don’t mind me asking did you have prolonged bleeding as well? Thanks again

  • Hi, I know you posted in April 2020, I too had tests for vaginal bleeding, January 2020 had hysteroscopy and womb biopsy (all clear), during this the specialist nurse found large polyp,  so polypectomy was arranged for 2 weeks later under GA, covid19 happened so my surgery was cancelled, April 2020 polyp removal and d+c performed, all good no problems polyp sent away for testing( benign)...phew!! 4 weeks of no bleeding it was bliss, mid to end of May, spotting started, thought it was my period, but it just kept going and getting heavier and heavier,  to the point I was going through pads like every half hour, changing clothes, I'd go the toilet and the blood was just pouring out of me, it was horrendous,  I ended up in A+E a few days ago, it was not stopping, and I was feeling breathless and weak, bloods done at hospital I was anemic,  was prescribed iron tablets and Tranexamic acid, utter rubbish, now I feel housebound and walking slow like old women,  to try and not let a fast gush of blood falling out of me, I'm only 44yrs,  pre-menopausal,  got to wait for 2weeks, for fast track appointment again, to have scan, and probably another hysteroscopy,  I literally only had polypectomy and d+c weeks ago, so what has happened in them weeks ....totally p***ed off.

  • Gosh ladies all very worrying. I've had my period since 4 Jun, I am 52. They have been erratic and I know it's peri menopause.  Took myself to A&E 6 Aug as I couldn't stand it any longer. Felt at different times it was going to stop but no, just eased off and then got worse.  (Saw consultant in Jan, waiting on hysteroscop). A&E sent me home with TXA and another referral, which is a phone call in a few weeks. Until today TXA has kept bleeding at bay but getting stomach pains.  Reduced 2 tablets three times a day to 1, but bleeding got worse so went back to 2 three times a day.  Today overnight things as bad as ever.  At what point is it unacceptable for women to be left to bleed out. Even after phone call with consultant, I still need the hysteroscopy and a resolution. Due to go back to work in a few weeks. Lucky during lockdown I was working from home and able to cope/manage, but dreading work now like this.

  • Hi Ladies, I hope all are finding their way through and getting things resolved, I found this board by googling because I have had irregular periods since Feb which came with a massive reaction to a chemical in a new Ikea sofa that I had purchased. Not had a problem ever before. Since then my immune system seemed to had gone into overload where I was allergic to literally the ground I walked on, everything, and it gradually settled down but my periods have been all over the place ever since and it's worsening. I've had to change my life completely because of it.

I'm currently heading into week   3 of bleeding which has never happened to me before. Showing no signs of stopping and getting heavier. In the first week I had symptoms of toxic shock, but when paramedics came out they said that it wasn't that and my symptoms were 'all in my head '.. they got an out of hours doctor to call me a few hours later to check in, who also was strong on my symptoms being all in my head despite my having tangible symptoms. I had a really hard time dealing with that in itself let alone what has been happening to me.

In the last few months due to absence of period entirely, two in a month, and irregular times I managed to get hormone testing after begging for it, and a smear. Smear cams back fine though my testosterone was slightly low and fsh slightly high, doctor said they would put me through for a scan on ovaries but I am guessing due to covid it might be a while to wait, I am terrified because the professionals I seek seem not to be concerned. Periods like this are not usual for me at all, neither is the toxic shock like reaction and rash experienced with it this time around.

I have not got anyone else to talk about this to so the thread here has been really helpful, it is so scary and I seem to keep being told that I'm going over the top. I'd say I'm reacting in the usual way for such sudden changes and in the light that pros seem not to be concerned at all, plus there's no answers towards what could be the problem. Why is women's health so dismissed?

    take care everyone x

  • Calico, I feel your pain!

In my early 40s I had long heavy periods, all the tests and scans were clear and I went on the Depo injections.  Bliss!  No periods at all. I had to come off the Depo when I reached 50 and it all started again.  More tests, again all clear.  This time I was given the mini pill and again the bleeding stopped completely.
When I got to 55 the doctor told me I had to come off the mini pill.  No bleeding, I thought I'd gone through the menapause.  Just over a year later (Nov 2019) out of the blue, I started bleeding.  I had a scan which was clear but GP referred me to a gynaecologist. By the time I got an appointment in Feb 2020 the bleeding had stopped.  Gynaecologist said she thought I was just unlucky and having a late menopause, so made another appt to see me after 3 months to see if things were ok.

Then lockdown happened... the bleeding started again, quite heavy at times, and the gynae appt was postponed til Sept.  Meanwhile I felt awful, spoke to my GP who sent me for blood tests which showed me to be anemic.
I had my appt with the gynaecologist (by phone) last week and she wants to do a biopsy after I have another scan.  My scan is booked for next Sunday.  I've been bleeding almost non-stop for about 5 months now. I'm 58 and just want it to stop.  The only positive is that I don't have any pains or cramps.

(For anyone experiencing flooding or heavy bleeding, I can recommend getting period pants.  I still wear a pad with them but at least they stop leaking on to clothes.)

Hope you've got it sorted Calico x

  • How are you all doing now?

I am I'm a similar boat. I have a history of irregular heavy bleeding but I have been regular since the birth of my last child in 2014. About a year about I started missing periods and having spotting between periods. The followed by 2 weeks or more of bleeding after missing a period. They were suddenly irregular but still very heavy and I had increased clear discharge as well as bloody discharge.

I bled most of July, which was heavy, I stopped bleeding for some thing like 5-7 days and woke on August 3rd  to passing a clot that was the length of my hand and the width of my palm with the thickness of my finger. I had come out of the blue and it terrified me. Bleeding was gushing and I was really worried. Contacted GP who referred me for urgent scan, bloods and Perscribed transexamic acid. Said to contact when bleeidmh stopped for examination.  Scan referral got rejected citing Covid reasons. Bleeding continued, mostly heavy but did lessen by end of the month, but still had gushes unexpectedly. I contacted GP who said to come in anyway and he examined me and sent for more bloods and on an urgent 2 week referral for gyn. Bloods didn't show I was particularly anemic surprisingly, my CA wasn't raised, and they did a smear which was negative for HPV (although they didn't test the cells). He said contact if I hadn't heard back in 2 weeks.

In this time I had started being in pain, feeling a heaviness and ache. Bleeding increased again and was coming in waves. Contacted GP back around 2.5 weeks later after not hearing back, she prescribed more tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid and iron. She confirmed that she had resent scan in mid August and that I was accepted as a urgent reffeal. Said to contact back by end of September if I hadn't heard back or if symptoms get worse. Bleeding increased a lot, I struggle to leave the house at all, my children have seen me a few times with blood running down my legs and clothes now, I fell over on the shower after feeling faint. It's been something like 58 days of constant bleeding but I was bleeding. before that too.

contacted the GP so said she would chase up both the scan and the referral as needing to be seen immediately. I keep asking about nortinstine (sp?) but they say they want me seen first. I'm so frustrated.

Glad  I am not alone though, sounds like it could be fibroids. Just desperate to be seen.

    How is everyone else doing?

  • Like so many of you I stumbled across this post while doing a Google search. It makes me sad that so many of us have had to go onto a cancer forum to get support for symptoms that more often than not turn out to not be related to cancer.

I am 48 and experienced heavy periods for the first time. It seems to be a topic  that is so really talked about that when we experience it all assume the worst. My GP referred me for an ultrasound (trans-abdominal and transvaginal) and the report came back indicating that I have probable andenomyosis. There was a slight thickening of the ovaries (4.4 mm) but that didn't seem to be of concern to them given that I have missed a period and it now experiencing one very heavy period. I also noticed a small cystic area but again don't think that is serious. Now got a two month wait to see a gynaecologist. I've been perscribes tranexamic and provera I am really not prepared to just carry on bleeding indefinitely. As many of you have commented I believe that this is an issue that is just swept under the carpet because they assume that most women are too embarrassed to take it further.

I would happily agree to a hysterectomy mother then spend months of a cycle of being seen being sent for another test it's stopping the symptoms for a week and then they come back with a vengeance. Why should I have to have a A coil put in, internal scans month after month, cells taken again and again while putting my life on hold???

  • Hi everyone

I hope you are all doing ok.

I have only skimmed through the posts, so please correct me if I am wrong, but I couldn't see any where the Mirena, Provera & TXA worked & I wonder why gynae & gps keep prescribing treatments that don't work.

I'm now 46 & have the Mirena, been using it for 12 years, initially to treat Complex Hyperplasia with Atypia & polyps. Thankfully it worked & between 2012 & 2017 I had no periods. Since then, my periods have returned, really short & light to begin with & I hardly needed any sanitary protection. Unfortunately, in the last year, the amount of blood & length have increased. I've now been bleeding for 7 weeks, my last one was 6 weeks (with a 9 day break in between). I also get really bad cramps - which can be worse & crippling after exercising.

I'm on my 3rd Mirena in 2 years, gynae keep insisting on changing it and I've been on Provera for 2 months. Last week my GP prescribed TXA but as with the lady who started this thread, I want the bleeding to stop naturally.

I've been so fed up with it all that I'm going down the alternative therapy route & have recently started having acupuncture & energy healing.

I have a gynae follow up next week & suspect I'll be fobbed off with more drugs. Although I find it does depend on which consultant - I've spoken to a few & they all have different ideas. One did suggest we remove the coil, stop the provera & see if my body can sort itself out naturally. That's also now my preferred option & I'll be pushing for that.

    take care X

  • Hi guys,

Just reading through all this, and it's kind of nice to know I'm not alone.

I'm 27 years old and I'm on day 25 of my period.
It's strange, as I thought it had stopped yesterday and BAM! Heavy today with clots.

Basically, I've been on a light period for the most of the month and then suddenly in these last 4 days it heavy and had clots. I took that as a sign as it finally flushing everything out so it would end, was lulled into a false sense of security with it becoming lighter and then today it's just become heavier again.

Totally fed up! I went to the doctors and they said to 'wait it out' for another 6 weeks (that was 2 weeks ago) but I have been researching and I'm going to ring up on Monday and push for bloods and an US.
Any advice on how to push for this?
I have slight abdominal discomfort alongside the bleeding.

It's stressing me out (which isn't that great I know) as my husband and I are trying to conceive.

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

ive had on and off heavy bleeding for about 6 months now I'm 30. First started a few years ago when I hadn't had any bleeding for a year after I got the implant taken out. I went for a pelvic scan and was shown to have a thick lining so was referred to gynaecologist. While I was waiting for the appointment I had a very heavy and prolonged period. When I went to the gynaecologist I was told it was because I was over weight and should lose weight to have normal periods. Now I am over weight but nothing to the degree that would effect my period. I was out on the mini pill and that was the end of that. Was on the mini pill a year and decided to come off because it stopped my periods all together, my period returned as normal and had a healthy period cycle for over a year. Then back in July I missed a period, next month I had it then the following month I didn't. That continued up until the start of December. Around the start of December I got my period very heavy with large clots for 2 weeks then I had spotting for a week and now back to a heavy period that isn't stopping with large clots. I've been taking tranexamic acid that I had left over last time ( still in date) because it's so hard to get an appointment with the gp. Even if I get an appointment with the gp they relate anything to my weight and then that's it don't hear from them again, I have been the same weight for 2 years had a healthy cycle for a year and a half then this happens. Anyone have any suggestions what I do. Or what it could be? ( my weight although not great but it has been steady for years and I fit into size 16 clothes so I'm not horribly obese)

  • I have had heavy vaginal bleeding since 23rd January. I know its not long considering some people's posts on here, but I can't get to SEE or even a telephone conversation with my doctor, because of covid. They recommended I wear no tampons but just pads but I am doing so much blood I feel disgusting, and have to wear a tampon as well. The doctor also recommended a pelvic exam, but the first time I had one of them I bleed for six weeks, and a male doctor I spoke to, to tell him about the after-pelvic-exam bleed, said due to the length of my bleeding after the pelvic, he said I should NEVER have anything like that again. My doctor at our walk in center said if I'm not changing protection every one or two hours, its usually further apart than that, then I'm not losing enough blood to worry about. My mother said I should get a D and C but due to my bleeding history when I had a pelvic exam, I don't think that's a good idea, since I am trying to STOP bleeding. What does anyone else recommend, as its snowing heavily here and due to my disability, I can't walk to the surgery or hospital, as I can't walk on snow and ice at all without falling over! I think my bleeding is either caused by mennorhagia or uterine fibroids but I am not a doctor. I'm 35
