Three weeks of heavy vaginal bleeding, very worried

I am 46 years old. Last year I went for a bladder scan and they found that the lining of the womb was abnormally thick ( but I had not had a period for 70 days). I had a biopsy which was normal but nothing else was done. My periods returned with no problems until May of this year when I had another two month gap. I came on again on the 29th July which was light for a few days but turned into 2-3 inch clots and very heavy. The clots seem to have gone but the bleeding is still heavy three weeks later. It was so bad last weekend that I went to A and E but typically it slowed down while I was there so no scan was done. I have been referred for a scan on the 3rd September but I am so worried I have booked a private one next week. The bleeding is heavy and bright red and I have pain in my right leg. I have previously suffered from ovarian cysts but it never affected my cycle. I only have one ovary now as one was removed due to a cyst. My doctor has fond blood work which was normal and included thyroid and menopause tests which came back normal and not menopausal. He prescribed Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding but I haven’t taken it yet as I want the bleeding to stop on it’s own.

sorry about all the information. I sm meant to be starting my first teaching job in three weeks and a PhD. I am very worried that my symptoms point to something sinister. I hope it is ok to post on here. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone has had similar and it had been ok.

  • Hi there, not a nice situation to be in. But I don't understand why you haven't taken the tranexamic acid. You went to the doc for help and advice, and haven't followed the advice. I say this as a female who some years back had very heavy bleeding, took those tablets, and things settled down. Why wait when you have a possible solution available? Please think about it.

  • Thank you for replying. The prescription says take for up to four days so I was worried that the bleeding would stop and then start again for the scan. Also I was hoping it would subside on its own and I could stop worrying. You are right, my husband has gone for the prescription. If you don’t mind me asking did you have prolonged bleeding as well? Thanks again

  • Honestly, it was so long ago I'd forgotten about it until I saw "tranexamic acid," and thought golly, I was given that. Not sure about the details I'm afraid.

As you have a scan booked, I doubt it will make any difference whether things have settled down or not. They can still investigate.

I understand you wanting it to subside on its own, but sometimes things need medical help. If you were a bit more comfortable it might help lessen the anxiety,

Fingers crossed that you get more information soon, and can relax.

  • Thank you, everything you have said makes sense.

  • A quick update, any advice or information ppreciated. I am still bleeding even with the Tranexamic and I am only allowed to take it for four days so will have to stop soon. My stomach feels bloated and I am very scared. It is now nearly four weeks since the bleeding started. Prior to this I only missed two periods and had normal cycles previously with no spotting.

  • Hello, I've had a similar issue with very heavy bleeding so much so transemic acid didn't seem to help much, my doctor gave me norothisterone- amazing....stopped the bleeding, I've got a ca125 test this week- hoping for good news, I hope you are ok and things settle down xx

  • Hi,

I have had the CA125 test done a couple of times due to previous cysts. I think this is fairly standard when they are checking this area so try not to worry about this. Please  let me know how you go on with the gynaecologist.

My bleeding carried on full pelt for another week, then a gap of four days and now spotting. The Tranexamic didn’t work for me, it’s good to know that something should stop it. I go to see a Gynaecologist tomorrow, my scan found a cyst but I don’t really know anything else until tomorrow.

    Best wishes x

  • Good luck tomorrow, I'm going to the doctors first thing to see if I can get the blood test sooner, I'm so confused as the guy who did my ultrasound said there were no areas of concern but now there's these small lesions on an ovary, saying that apart from heavy bleeding I've had no other symptoms so I'm hoping they are just being super careful, let me know how you get on xx

  • Offline in reply to H2

Good morning, just got back from doctors who said they are just being super careful but he doesn't think there is anything to worry about phew, blood test at 11ish so hope it's all over soon.

    Thinking of you today xx

  • Brilliant! That’s really good news re the doctor. Thank you that is kind, I will update you later. xx
