Lymphoma? HL? NHL? something else?

About 8 months ago a lump came up just inside my right collarbone. I saw the GP, she said I would have to wait two weeks and if it was still there she would refer me. Well, it went away. Only it came back a few weeks ago. It's kidney bean shaped (I think, it's def not round), about an inch long, it's sometimes tender, my neck aches in the evening and sometimes the morning. A few days ago another lump appeared, much smaller and round, like a smallish pea, next to the other one. This one is sore all the time.

I have had night sweats but not sure if I'm just hot.

I've seen a different gp and she took bloods (nothing significant other than crp 129) and has referred me for an ultrasound, and I'm currently awaiting that appointment.

Of course I've googled these things and it comes back with the worst.

Can anyone suggest anything non cancer related?

I hsvd a 13 month old son and the thought of being away from him or not seeing him grow up breaks my heart.

  • I've just seen the post from Emdaly8 & that you've replied.  It's a shame for her but could be good for you.  I hope she'll tell you something useful.

  • Hi I’ve read all your posts and I am really sorry for what you have been through and that you have been diagnosed with HL.I just wanted to know really if you had any other symptoms or how you felt?? I’ve been referred on the 2 week pathway and have been for my first appointment today (I’ve had a lump/lymph node for 18mths and havent Been right since it’s been there, last 3 wks started with heavy night sweats but not every night ,itching had this on and off over the last few moths ,tired, and it hurts with alcohol, ache in groin on 1 side with small lumps up) today they have requested tests (mri of lump and ct chest groin and tummy) it said on the paper work lymphoma??? Kat xx

  • Firstly, I'm sorry you're going through this.

Let me start by telling you that my treatment was extremely successful, I've since had another baby and I have just been completely discharged by the specialists as they pretty much consider me cured and my risk of relapse now is "very low indeed".

I had the lumps, the nightsweats and the strange achey alcohol thing too.

I was treated by an amazing hospital by a world leading specialist. He only ever talked of cure rates, not survival rates, so I took my cues from him, and basically kept a mostly positive attitude throughout, even when I puked all over the day ward floor (hey, I then got the expensive anti-sickness apprepitant after than ;D).

It may not be what you're thinking, but whatever it is, take each day as it comes.

IF it is Lymphoma, the treatment isn't exactly fun, but it is completely do-able. Blind stubborness got me through, I found eating through the chemo sickness was great for me, gave my stomach something else to do, especially cream crackers and butter, or proper homemade macaroni cheese.

I did cut out sugar for a long time, I wasn't taking any chances that it was going to feed the little b*ggers!

I found this board really useful and you're welcome to message me on here or directly as much as you want.

This stage is by far the worst, the waiting is just awful because your mind wanders all over the place.

  • Thanks for the rapid response I am sure mine is nothing but goodness me the waiting is the worst.Thats so lovely that you have just had another baby and your treatment was a success. I think when your at the waiting stage you talk yourself in to having it and talk yourself out lol where did you itch?? I itch all over but mainly my scalp and arms xx

  • I am glad you are doing better.  I am a 21 year old male and noticed a round hard painless lump in my upper left thigh groin area this past week.  It’s the size of a large pea and I’m very concerned it may be lymphoma.  However, I have been having flu like symptoms this past week feeling icky with a sore throat and congestion.  Do you happen to know if lymphoma is usually more than one swollen lymph node?  Hopefully it’s just an enlarged lymph node due to being sick, but I’m not sure.

  • Hey Matt

Firstly, always get it checked out! If it feels not normal to you and you're concerned, you should always get checked out. Even if the GP says it's nothing.

Don't be shy, they see dozens of groin areas on a daily basis.

Lymph nodes are tricky beasts, they swell up to do their jobs, my kids get lumpy necks all the time and you can imagine what that does for my paranoia!

Never be sorry for being concerned. If you're worried enough to Google it and find us, you should see your GP on an emergency appointment.

  • Kat, I didn't itch, I dont think. I've always been quite itchy though, neck, torso and anywhere I shave (??!!).........

You're on the right track, once you've been scanned and had biopsies, they'll soon set you straight. The protocol may have changed a fair bit in the last 3 years though.

Keep asking questions, keep pushing forwards.

  • Thank you.  I did end up seeing a GP a few days ago who said they think it’s definitely a swollen inguinal lymph node and to just give it a few weeks and see if it grows or not.  She didn’t seem very concerned at all.  I also had a testicular exam which they didn’t find any lumps or bumps which is good to know.  I’m just very worried about waiting another two weeks, but I guess that it’s protocol and maybe if she was concerned, she would have rushed me to a scan, but hopefully it’s nothing.

i did have a full blood work up and pelvis, abdomen, and chest ct scan done two months ago for a different symptom and those all came back clean.  Not sure if that would have shown any signs of lymphoma.  Thanks!

  • I'm replying to you on 2 threads, lol.

I'm sure as they've done scans and bloods something would have shown up in one of them.

There are some stubborn viruses about at the moment,  fingers crossed it's just one of those moving through.
