Colonoscopy

Hi every one I’m due for a colonoscopy on Tuesday I’m feeling really scared don’t really feel.upto the procedure as I really suffer with stress and anxiety but I know I need to do this  I have been feeling as if I need to poo but some times it’s just reddish pus and feeling very gassy but because of feeling I need to poo I’m always in the bathroom , been having problems for a while now. I thought maybe I just had internal piles but when I went to my gp doctor couldn’t see or feel any thing so did a fit test which came back positive  so I was referred for a colonoscopy  I’m so scared of having cancer  not looking forward to the bowel prep  I think your all a lot braver than me   Xx

  • I had a colonoscopy some years ago and was utterly terrified before it.

GP couldn't see or feel anything with me either but it did turn out to be piles. Nurse said that wasn't unusual, for them not to be noticed.

    Hope you get good news

  • Thank you  I’ will be taking the prep to night and then six in morning  as my appointment is afternoon can’t have any thing to eat now until after the colonoscopy. I’m really scared about tomorrow I’m still hoping it’s just internal piles hope the prep I can cope with  I guess I will be on toilet all night  hope I get good news as my stress levels are so high

  • I have the same as two of you mentioned- passing quite a lot of blood and mucus. It was occasional, now it's every day. I can relate to what you said about it being scary just going to the toilet. But it's good to know this isn't so unusual and I suppose it's part fo the body dealing with the issue (whether piles, or in my case something worse).

My big immediate worry is that I'm struggling to eat and am losing too much weight. I've been anemic a while (presumably due to losing blood), so I don't have as much energy. My stomach then doesn't feel great, but I think that's directly  connected to anxiety - does anyone else experience that?

  • Hoping everything goes well for you today x

  • I didn't feel like eating either, that was the last thing I was thinking of x so I do understand what your going through x

Thinking of you today WE got this xx

  • They rang about an hour ago asking if I can come in earlier as they have had a lot of cancellations so I have to be there for 13 15 I told her my couloir is orange yellow but not see through she said it should be fine  as long as no bits  my stomach still making loud noises

  • That is the same colour as mine was and it was fine ,I hope things go well , Jenny

  • My stomach still making loud noises

  • That's ok, you'll feel much better after its all over and you have some answers to what's been going on ,once you get to the hospital they will make you feel  much more relaxed .

  • Hi every one went for colonoscopy  wish I hadn’t I have a growth in my rectum the took 8 biopsies  I can feel that growth inside my bottom I thought I had piles  it was all horrible kept blowing wind inside me I had to keep letting it out  feel down I thought I would come back feeling great but no I have cancer  she said it could have been there some time  so on this 2 week path way and they don’t know if it’s gone through any where else bowel wall

  • Aww, everything you are saying is identical to what Ive gone through x everything will be fast tracked now

I had my colonosphy 1st December, my 1st chemo started 3rd January

    I've had 4 scans since, I had 10 biopsies

Same as you I "felt" my tumour, I just thought it was piles as my bowel screening I had done a few months back as nothing found

If it wasn't for a new doctor reviewing another problem I had god knows what would have happened as I've no symptoms

She was the one who asked did I have any problems with my bowels or bladder, I too said I've got piles

Nope, it was a bloody tumour

The worst part for me was waiting for and having scan results to confirm Exactly what was going on and what would happen next

Mine has gone to my liver, but they can zap that they said

Still haven't had my results from a full body scan and full liver scan to see if it's spread any further

No news is good news hopefully

Not a good day today for me, feeling sorry for myself, so bored too, I'm used to working 10 hrs day

Tomorrow will5bd better for me, I'm determined to get out of this rut I'm in xx

  • Hello Tango

I'm sorry to read this. It is scary news of course. Several of us on here have received similar in recent weeks- you are not alone and we will get through this together.

I had the same news as you 8 days ago. Just like you've described, though we know every case is different, the medical experts can do so much these days.

No doubt they will quickly arrange scans for you and come up with a treatment plan.

    Thinking of you today.

  • Sorry you're all going through this. I hope you all get speedy effective treatment. Rooting for you all.

  • Hi James 4000 just wondering how are you getting on now. I’m fed up of keep going to the loo with wind and mucus  I Darby go out I need to be near a toilet  it seems the more I try and eat a little more  I need to be at the loo passing wind and mucus  keep getting a bit of stomach cramps it’s all worrying  hope things are.not too bad  x

  • Hi Tango

    Thank you for checking in.

I'm up and down. I've kind of got used to having bouts of going to the toilet more often. I definitely produced a lot more blood and mucus after the colonscopy- i guess due to the biopsies? I try to tell myself this my body expelling the bad stuff and its a good thing.

Psychologically I've maybe accepted things a little, but I veer into anxiety when I think about what's next: scan results, treatment plan etc.

It's very reassuring hearing from others in this forum (in this thread and one or two others) that there seems to be so much they can do these days to treat, cure and hopefully facilitate a full recovery. I'm clinging to that.

I had my MRI scan at the weekend (pretty intense mentally, but I got through it). I'm hopeful the MDT will be discussing my case in their meeting this Friday, and that the detail they've found is good news, relatively. I'm in limbo for now, and so worried about treatment- trying not to think about it.

I find "taking each day as it comes" very difficult in general, and more so now.

  • James  can I ask what is the mri like to go through I’m worried about that as well I know that will be for me maybe this week I’m dreading it. Sorry for asking. I’m such a baby I have never been through much in my life and don’t know about health things much   Do you get stomach cramps  xx

  • James 4000  I guess what I’m worried about is. When they did the colonoscopy  she said the growth looks like it’s been there a while. And then  I guess it’s all the in known  I’m scared about every thing  haveing op and chemo  my mind runs away with me.  You sound to be a lot stronger and you are holding it all together I think your doing so well  better than me   Lots of love  x

  • Hi Tango

Maybe it's just because I'm a week ahead of you, so I've had more time to process things, and my anxiety has settled a little, so I feel less ill.

I'm scared too, and am up and down with all this. I think that's a normal reaction for all of us.

I get cramps a little, bit I've always had a sensitive stomach. I'm unclear when it's hunger, wind, anxiety etc. I find, for me, a hot water bottle  lots of mints, peppermint tea and chamomile works.

The MRI was fine, I guess. It's not fun, as it took quite a long time. But essentially you just have to lie still and do nothing for ages. I was praying and meditating, as best I could, which helped me get through it. It doesn't hurt or anything. I did find that I could physically feel the last 2 scans they did (it's it was several scans one after another, for me), and the radiologist (?) said that was normal as the last ones are a stronger frequency so you may feel them and feel a little hot. The stress was all psychological and I was a bit shaken up afterwards but the staff were very kind and supportive.

  • James 4000  thank you for your reply. My anxiety levels are not good but all you can do is go with the flow so to speak I’m getting really constipated never have I ever been this way just hope where the tumour is situated it doesn’t cause a blockage I’m only eating small and only what I think I can maybe eat   Still loosing weight  which is a worry I’m really trying to eat better but it’s a struggle stomach makes lots of noise  so happy you are feeling better and taking things in your stride   All I want to do is like every one on here is just to be able to get on with your life. I’m a 70 year old piano student and have another course coming up but my mind won’t let me think about any thing else. Xx

  • Hi tangoPotter...weight loss is to be expected when our food intake is reduced.  Same for gurgling/gastric noises.. less food means less work for the gastric juices to break down.. bit like when you feel hungry and your tummy rumbles..

You say your concerned about a blockage being caused by the tumour...this is why it's vital to keep B.M regular...impacted faeces is excruciating..

Really hoping you have been given access to a nurse by your GP/consultant or hospital..

  • Eastendgirl thank you for your reply  it’s really lovely to talk to you thank you. I guess I’m just getting things out of proportion not thinking straight  every thing you say makes a lot of sense  I’m just over thinking every thing every extra pain extra wind extra stomach noise   Thank you for making me feel a bit better xx

  • TangoPotter...you are not getting things out of proportion,  you are struggling with the news you have been given.. that is very natural.. thanku for your kind words,  my only hope is that knowing you are not alone can help a little.. sharing helps to ease our worries..having support and understanding is vital...be kind to yourself x x
