Positive FIT Test

Hi all,

I know diagnosis can only come from a medical professional but I am truly terrified of having bowel/colon cancer. I have had intermittent blood in my stool for a while but put it down to piles. The blood has always been bright red so fresh. Last week I had difficulty passing stools followed by what can only be described as very watery diarreah. I knew it wasn't right so contacted the doctor. To be fair, having read through other stories, I think I'm quite lucky because she immediately ordered a FIT test which I returned same day.

Today I receive a called from the doctor informing me my fit test was positive (17 - I don't understand the numbers) and they were doing an urgent 2 week referral. I then got a called from the hospital and have a telephone appointment with a nurse tomorrow morning to discuss what is next - I believe that will be a colonoscopy.

my concern is that for the last week I've had low grade fever pretty much every day, mostly in the evening. My appetite has left the building so I have lost 8lbs in the last week (I'm overweight!).

I had a similar episode in July last year but it was as I was admitted to hospital for Covid so I figured it was a symptom of covid but now am worried that I've had symptoms for nearly a whole year and haven't done anything about it.

Does anyone know how the numbers work with a fit test. The doctor today didn't really say much other than he's sending an urgent cancer referral which has given me anxiety beyond anything I've experienced before.

I'm 42, don't know family history as maternal side we've never known. Paternal side there's no known history of cancer.

Do the fit result numbers inicate how serious whatever it is could be? I'm so frightened I have cancer. I have two kids, one is in the middle of her GCSEs and I really can't think straight at the moment.

if it helps anyone. My symptoms:

change in bowel habit - currently go to the toilet every morning - mostly loose stool but only one occurance of the watery stool following constipation the day before

some mucous when I wipe

low grade fever (mainly in the evening)

recently picked up a cold/flu from my daughter (2 weeks ago so perhaps lower immune system)

loss of appetite (eating less)

weight loss

fatigue

blood in stool (the stool sample I provided had no visible blood and was quite liquid like)

  • Hi,

Worrying and waiting is the worst.

Have you seen the doctor yet? Any results back yer?

    best wishes

    Trevor

  • Hi Niam , did you get your colonoscopy and the results ? Would like to know if you are OK.  I had a fit result of 28 and I sm having the pill cam colonoscopy.  I  am very frightened in case it is colon cancer . But on and off I have seen very little bright blood in my stool and on this particular morning I took the fit test I had been straining and my poo had a little bit of blood on it . So the test would be 28 I'm sure

  • Hi Trevor what was the reading of the fit test and have you had any symptoms etc . Have you heard anything? It looks like doctor is not concerned but you are which is understanding.  But when you was referred was it on the 2ww appointment

  • Did you have any symptoms apart from the fit test being 17 ? I had a fit test and it was 28 .

  • Hi Leocurley,

yes, IBS was worse. That's why I saw Doctor.

After I had camera, I got got the all clear, all the biopsies came back fine.

    IBS fare up.

Good luck, let me know how you get on.

    Best wishes

  • So would this mean then that the higher the fit reading the more blood there is in the stool ?

  • Is 28 high or still just a bit ? If a person had visable blood in the  stool and did a fit test with that stool would this show up high readings? Can a fit test only show ocult blood readings ? Thank you fir answer .

  • Hi Margaret Mary hope you don't mind me asking this question iknow you said you are no expert but you do know enough to bring comfort to those troubled by this particular point.

Could you answer me this question please if a person did a fit test on a stool with visible blood on it would this be picked up ? And would it explain a reading of 28 ? I was made to believe that fit tests only pick up ocult blood. It could be wrong .

  • Yeah, the higher the reading, the more blood there is in the stool. 28 isn't very high. If you look through this site, you'll see people who got results in the hundreds, one or two even hit 1,000.

I am not sure whether or not it would pick up visible blood, as my experience happened when our HSE was hacked and as a result, I had the older test.

  • Mine was also 17. The nurses said they see people with 100s but that doesn't provide much comfort. Tldr I'm ok.

    longer...

Got Fit tested cos of a little anaemia and then got a call from my GP a few days later due to the positive results, and he put me in the list at the local hospital. 10 days later I was having the colonoscopy.

Two days before the colonoscopy I could actually see blood in the toilet which really worried me.

But in the day they found nothing when they looked except a tiny polyp Which they removed for good measure. Really great unit.

My piles didn't look sore or bloody in the camera but the NHS consultant was clear that my bowels are nice and clean.

I also had a private insurance claim on the go and so 2 days before the NHS appointment I had seen a private consultant and he had done a rectal exam and scope upto 15cm up.my bum and said there wasn't anything of interest, which he said was comforting because rectum issues are trickier. But what he did say was that assuming the colonoscopy came back ok (which it has) then I should come.back to him to check me.out from the other end as blood could.come from further up and my kind of anaemia is associated with low folate and he said that that is still worth investigating via endoscopy as there may be a problem causing that anemia (I self meditatied with vit b 9 and 12 and iron).

So if you get a clear sweep then maybe also ask about the other end.

Current conclusion is that the visible blood came from my piles even though I think they aren't active right now. It's very hard not to worry. This might change if I get the endoscopy on the private.

    Good luck everyone.
