Very high FIT test result

Hello all,

I'm a 50+ man and got the result of my second FIT test yesterday. To be honest am feeling a bit freaked out - actually majorly freaked out. Reason for the test was that I've had intermittent mild abdominal pain for about 6 months. I assumed it was a muscular problem when clearly it wasn't.

The result of the first test was over 900 and the second around 1000. So there's little doubt there's blood in the samples (even though none was visible). My GP has made an urgent referral to the colorectal clinic at the hospital. It's hard not to google things like this when you're in shock (have tried to only read stuff from reputable sources), and I understand that there are a number of things that can be causing blood in the stool: ulcers, polyps, hemorrhoids as well as cancer. Though looking through different forums, I've not seen anyone report figures like this and things feel pretty bleak today.

Not really sure why I'm writing this, as I realise nothing new will be known until I get the referral/have colonoscopy. Maybe it's just to know that other people are going through the same thing, or even just understand what I'm talking about. Thanks for reading :)

  • No results.  After my ct scan I was referred for colonoscopy. Still no letter regarding findings of ct scan.

Anyway I  followed prep to the letter, went along to appointment but procedure didn't go ahead because prep hadn't cleared bowel!. I was asked if I suffered with constipation,  told them yes and it was on my hospital records.  Anyway now I have to follow 5 day diet, with daily laxative then prep again!

I am still waiting to hear when that will happen.  Managed to get through on telephone to hospital,  only to be told its a wait for department to contact me.  Then I  was asked why I went out of my nhs area for colonoscopy.  I was given the appointment because I was urgent referral and no appointment available nearer.

So that has caused delay because my health authority has to contact other NHS authority to find out???

    Crazy situation!!

Kind thoughts going out to everyone on this chat site.

Thanks Sue.   The polyp was tiny apparently, not big enough to remove.  And it wasnt there on my colonoscopy 2 years previously.

My bowels were virtually immaculate in 2021 at my first colonoscopy! Not a thing to mention.  My stools were near on perfect . But the last two years everything has changed...god knows whats going on...!

And now i have so many problems on the outside too!  Really hope to get to the bottom of it (excuse the pun!)

  • Still nothing from hospital regarding new appointment for colonoscopy.  I have rang but all I get is "I will find out what's happening and get back to you"

So much for the urgent referral?

I am supposed to be meeting consultant on 1st December.  Guessing to discuss results of colonoscopy (that did happen) again I rang and asked whether appointment with consultant will go ahead and told "not sure, will have to find out and get back to you!

    Frustrating

  • Ahhhh gosh that's so frustrating! Keep pushing them.  Have you been for the Colonoscopy yet?  Are you still waiting for CT results?  It's ridiculous how they are delaying things.  Keep us updated x

  • I haven't been on this chat for a while but was wondering how you were doing.  Sounds like you are going through a really rough time with the chemo. Hoping and praying things will improve when they put you on the lower dose.  They might do that and see how you are and if all fine, maybe put you back up on the initial dose.  Our bodies get such a shock from the chemo and maybe need time to adjust. Thinking of you.  It's my 83 year old mum's turn to go for her colonoscopy.  My dad went a few months ago, and as mentioned earlier in this chat, I went on the 7th November to have mine.  My mum didn't want to go to the doctor. She doesn't like them at all.  She has lost some weight but her appetite has reduced but she still eats cakes, and rolls etc.  My dad persuaded her to go to the doctors which she did a couple of weeks ago.  The doc never mentioned her blood results so assume they are fine but says she will be referred for a colonoscopy.  We are all worried but will get through things with the support of family and the amazing people on this chat.  Keep me updated on how you are doing xx

I feel so bad for elderly people having to go through colonoscopies. I had to take my 95-year-old auntie To the doctors recently because she had had problems, and she had to go behind the curtain and be examined by a very young male doctor... I really felt for her.

Hope everything's okay for your mum.

I'm still waiting on my colonoscopy appointment since over a week ago,!;)

Absolutely agree.  It's hear breaking to see that they have to go through doctors and colonoscopies etc at an elderly age.  it's more traumatising for them.  Awwww God bless your precious auntie.  Feel for them too.  Thank you. I hope all ok too.  Keep us updated on your progress with your colonoscopy appointment.  It took me a month to get mine from the date my doctor received my FIT result.  Apparently here in Scotland, the Scope department within the NHS is really efficient which I must agree it is, but the rest of  NHS Scotland it a bit of a shambles.  Those were my doctor's words. x

  • Hiya. Since they stopped my tablets I took another 3 days before I was really a le to eat, but boy have I been eating this week.

At my consultant appointment yesterday I was told there were 2 options, no more chemo & just operate or try another routine d at half does & see how my body tolerates.

I think k she saw the horror in my face at no more chemo so she decided to reduce & try that. I asked if reducing would still eork, to be told it will still do something (clearly that worries me now), also asked if I tolerate it will they put dose back up a bit, but was told no to that as well.

I was told the aim of the chemo is to kill the cancer cells, rather than make me so ill that I can't eat & too week to for surgery.
