Doctor thinks husband may have Prostate cancer with mets

My  79 year old husand is being referred for CT scan for ? prosate cancer with mets. HOwever he has never shown any signs and symtons of prosate cancer or mets. His blood test has shown very high PSA levels which is why the Dr thinks he has prostate cancer. Has anyone had experience of this as I am in total shock and very worried about his progosis.

  • HI all, my hubby Mike was told his biosy results which wasnt good. Gleason was 10 the highest and confirmed that the cancer had spread to the spine to include the pelvis, lymph nodes and lungs.  It was a real shocker hearing all of this. However, the Consultant did say that it was treatable and given that Mike had a very young physiology he would sail through the treatment and do well. He will see an Oncologist and start chemo tabs in the next stage of his cancer journey.  So he continues to play tennis and badminton and apart from feeling a bit lethargic this afternoon he seems to be coping really well and is very stoic about it all. His goal is to beat his beloved Dad who died at the age of 82 years Mike was 80 this month.  At lealst now we know the worst and hopefully with the extra treatment Mike will be able to carry on for a long time. So we are planning to go on holiday in September, however not sure about going abroad, although Mike is keen while I am more cautious. Has anyone gone abroad with similar readings to Mike, would be good to know.

Take care everyone and enjoy the week end which I beleive will be quite hot.x

  • HI Billy, hope you  and your wife are keeping well and taking good care of yoursleves. I looked up the link you mentioned above, however this gentleman's was contained within the prostate which was such good news for him.

I am sure you read by now that Mike's biopsy results wasnt good. His gleason score is 10 the highest it can go. Was confirmed that the cancer has spread to the spoine, pelvis, lymph nodes and lung. Of curse the hormone treatment he started a few weeks ago have helped really well. He is still playing tennis three tiimes a week and badminton once a week. We are seeing the Oncologist tomorrow so will know what oral chemotherapy tabs he will have. We were told by the Urologist that it would be tabletsl. This is such a worryng time for us however I am trying to be very upbeat and positive for Mike as he is doing the same. I am assuming that there will be side affects to the chemotherapy which is the bit I am not looking forward for Mike's sake.

I havent had a post from  you for a while and hope all is good with you.

  • So sorry not replying before now things chaos at home im just getting a breather from a few jobs, struggling in the hot weather but jobs still need doing, im still not back on hormone therapy talking (over phone)to oncologist 27th about going back on meds, bought a car couple of weeks ago been checking everything out properly, I've made sure i can get both mobility scooters in back and safe so a few mods.

Brenda is still in hospital blood keep going wrong and covid so im not allowed last week and this still taking her things, give to nurse to pass on.

Hubby's tablets should be bit weaker than intravenous chemotherapy, so hopefully less problems, he might have to relax more and get tired easier  .

Again sorry for not replying sooner, still got plenty of jobs to get done  .

    Billy

P.s  haven't figured out gleason score I've talked to people with contained cancer and higher score than me and looks like our cancer is very similar but score is much greater.

  • Hi Billy, hope you and Brenda  are doing ok. Mike was seen by the Oncologist on Tuesday and was recommended to have IV chemotherapy ( Docetaxol ). 6 sessions every 3 weeks. He did prefer to have the tablets however was advised to have the chemo as his cancer is very aggresive, spine , pelvis, lungs also he was told as he is very fit at the moment he will do well with the chemo.  So he starts in about 2 to 3 weeks time.  The whole thing has been such a roller coaster for us however at least now we have a treatmentn plan. Mike as usual is continuing to play tennis and badminton.  All he is worried about is if he can still continue to play  sport while having his treatment!! So there we go.

Take care of yourself and let me know how you are doing as well.

  • Im actually glad he's having docetaxol it's a strong chemotherapy same as i had and timing. I was working metal fabrication and welding firm so plenty of exercise. But with other medical problems had to have a few days off in-between sessions so straight back to work as soon as i felt good enough. (Very understanding boss).

He might start feeling tired but tell him not to push himself to much or he'll do more harm than good. After treatment he'll soon get energy back.

I'm feeling alot more normal now, still off my hormone therapy (cancer meds)talking oncologist on 27th about getting cancer count down again.

My Mrs should be home next few weeks having trouble getting carers.

I've got another small car with plenty of room in back for couple of mobility scooters if want to go out but alot of walking might be needed still cannot manage alot of walking, hence scooter.

Really glad he's very fit and keeping going, im very jealous.

  • Hi Billy so here is the news about  the latest with Mike.  He starts chemotheray a week on Friday so that is good. However his diagnosis is confirmed as T3bN1M1c - bone metastases and small volume lung metastases. His prostate gland measured 80cc with a locally advanced prostate cancer with pelvic lymphadenopathy.  Apparently the multipe lbone mestastases involves the thoracolumbar spoine, bilateral ribs, bilateral hemipelvis, right humerus, right feoral shaft. The whole spine is affected along with bilateral ribs. The only positive win all of this is that the liver so far has not been affected.

As you can imagine whilst Mike continues to play tennis and remain so active and pain free, I am in total shock reading the report. I cannot get my head roung these findings and then when I look at Mike it just does not apear to add up. However I will continuoe to be positive and support Mike in every way I can.

Hope you are doing ok  in this heat and Brenda is back home with you. Take care of yourself.

  • Really glad they are getting a move on with chemotherapy, i was 4 months from diagnosis to starting chemo, i noticed Mike is M1c where i am b as Mike has more bone to be treated. I slipped up buy not telling my dear wife every where my cancer was and i had a bad do and she called 111 and they told her everything, so she was rather mad at me (very mad actually)only she'd had a breakdown years ago, because i was very ill and she thought i was dieing.

Didn't want her to have another breakdown but she was ok this time.

Remember Mike could slow down when having chemotherapy but can get back to fitness after it just takes time and to not overdo things.

    Billy

  • Thanksfor this Billy. So we re on countdown now. Tomorrow Mike has to go for a blod test before he starts his chemotherapy on Friday. He was told it would only take just over an hour. I am quite surprised as for some reason I thought it would take much longer.

Hope all is going okay with you.

  • Normal chemotherapy does take about an hour minimum but waiting can take hours, if anyone has bad side effects they have to be treated first so everyone else has to wait, my first session i was 4 hours late getting in don't think i had one proper time, they were supposed to finish at 6.oo. pm there was still 6 waiting to start treatment at that time.

Hope things go well.  Remember reading or something while waiting, sometimes there is sandwich and drink.

    Billy

Ps  grandson took me first time as not sure what I'd be like to drive.

  • Thanks Billy, tomotow is our big day and as I am writing this Mike is out playing badminton. His main focus is on how long will it be before he can get back to his sporting activites.

Just another query, Mike's first PSA result was 57.8, however he had another done last week and it was 57.9.  I was hoping that it would go down since his hormone treatment started over 2 months ago. Also he had his Decapeptl Injection last month.  Has anyone else exerienced this spike?.

Hope you and Brenda are doing ok.
