Doctor thinks husband may have Prostate cancer with mets

My  79 year old husand is being referred for CT scan for ? prosate cancer with mets. HOwever he has never shown any signs and symtons of prosate cancer or mets. His blood test has shown very high PSA levels which is why the Dr thinks he has prostate cancer. Has anyone had experience of this as I am in total shock and very worried about his progosis.

  • Hi i didn't feel ill apart from kept being sick alot various blood tests ok only one showed something wrong so a PSA test it was 1500 , Dr said definitely cancer but still had biopsy where i was told again, had plenty of scans to confirm where and what stage .

It was stage 4: Gleason 8 T3B N1 M1B classed as uncurable ,mine went to prostate, lymph nodes spine ribs pelvis and a lung . that was Feb 2016,i was 64 just thinking about retirement,.oh sickness turned out to be hiatus hernia , lucky really otherwise it could have gone to far to treat .

I've managed ok with my univited guest these years hormone therapy to start ,then chemotherapy .Odd years change of treatment but i manage ok still keeping garden tidy and the house and mostly looking after my wife who has dementia and other problems.

My latest PSA was 1.6 it has been 0.3 . but up and down a bit.

If i can give and info please ask, remember im talking from personal experience not medically trained.

  • Hi Billy, Thank you for sharing your exerience and its great to hear that you are doing ok. So sorry to hear about your wife's dementia. Your story is giving me some hope, I am very keen for my husband ot have his CT scan done privately as it would be don ewihtin 3 days instad of two plus weeks. He is not keen as in the first instnace he has no idea that his referral is for ? prostate cancer with mets. I only picked this up by looking at his referral letter. Not sure if I should tell him.

  • From when i was first diagnosed to starting treatment was 4 months what with CT, x-ray,biopsy bone scan, and MRI and waiting for meeting, what to do.remember they never Rush and want to be sure not to get things wrong.

  • Should I tell my husband that his referral is for prostate cancer with mets?. He thinks it is to do with an earlier diagnosis the GP made which was Costochronditis.

  • That particular referral waiting time isn't going to change a whole lot. Going private can sometimes slow things down, because then, records are being transferred between hospitals and other doctors signing off work for other doctors.

Private is good if you get an unreasonably long time or are being fobbed off by your gp about why they aren't going to scan you. But he's been referred, and going private will likely slow things down as a whole. Sometimes hospitals also want to use their own scans anyway.

This was the scenario put to my wife when she thought the 2 weeks was going to be an age for her initial breast clinic appointment. Keep to the NHS and it will move along seamlessly. Ultimately, treatment won't begin any quicker than it would in this case.

  • He Will find out sooner or later so really better now rather than he finds out through some one saying something wrong later on.

i didn't Tel my darling wife where all mine was as I was worried as years ago she had a breakdown thinking i was dieing of cancer when i was very ill about 16 years before,  but chemotherapy problems ment she called 111 for help and they told her, she was rather mad with me, but luckily understood why i didn't tell her. So please tell him truth rather than hide things that might slip out later . Be positive .

  • Hi Billy,is there anything you have cut out regarding your diet, or indeed completely chaning what food you eat? I was told that things like, green tea, tomatoes, walnluts, brocollli, cabbage  and fish is good for advanced prostate cancer. HOwever we have alwasy eaten plenty of fresh vegetables, any tips would be great.

  • Hi Delhi  ,it looks like your having a good healthy diet. anyway

I thought about changing what i eat but different people say different things, there was a cookery program on last night, they were saying tomatoes were unhealthy because of something in the skin and seeds for people with cancer. I've always loved toms. Especially with cheese on toast, im making myself hungry.

Im just cooking pigs fry, doing it in the slow cooker with plenty of gravy and veg, it'll last me days, especially gravy with bread.

Im home alone, well apart from Bella our chihuahua, my darling wife is in hospital just now. Hopefully she'll be out soon

Hope things go well when you get treatment options. Hope he chears up.

Trouble is with people when they get treatment alot leave forum, but there are a few regulars. Keeping on and helping where they can.

Hope you are keeping him occupied as much as you can.

  • Hi Delhi,

I saw you were looking for some diet tips so I just wanted to share some information we have on our website, as well as this page about food controversies and supplements. As you'll see, it explores the research that has been carried out on certain types of food or drink, including tomatoes, to find out whether any of them may slow the growth of prostate cancer or reduce the risk of recurrence.

I hope this helps but if you have any questions or would prefer to discuss this in more detail with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday (except bank holidays) between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Steph, thank you for your very useful link.  Whist we do not eat a lot of red meats, we do have the odd chilli and spag bolognaise about once every 2 weeks. Is it okay for my husband to carry on with these two of his favourite dishes please. He does like mildly flaoured chicken curries as well.

I am so keen to make sure hubby is doing everything to slow down the growh of cancer cells.
