Starting Chemo in 5 Days

Hi :)

I've recently been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and I recently found out it's stage 2, however they mentioned I could possibly be stage 4 as the first radiologist who looked at my PET-scan results said it looked to be in my bone marrow, but that's getting checked over.

I'm starting ABVD chemotherapy on Thursday and i'm a little nervous, I'm 19 years old and I haven't had anybody in my family who's experienced this before so I'm not sure who to ask. How do I prepare for my first session? I wasn't told whether or not I could eat before hand but I know i'm going to be really hungry haha, and I'm not sure whether or not to bring a small blanket as I've heard from family of friends that the treatment rooms are quite cold.

Any advice? x

  • I was diagnosed with non hodgkin lymphoma yesterday. I thought I would say hello as I expect we are having the same fears and hopes. Take care and do message if you feel up to it. Best wishes

  • It's terrible, so many bad people in this earth and it happens to us ! I hope everything gets sorted as soon as for you, it took a month from my diagnosis to be starting my chemotherapy this week, so hopefully you'll get appointments and your start date soon, it's extremely nerve wracking but as first timers what else can we possibly do aha, best wishes to you too ! :))

  • Hi.

Most chemotherapy wards are warm like normal wards, most of you sit near a table so you can put food and drink on incase you get peckish, it can vary depending on your hospital though, normally someone nearby to talk to going through similar to you.

    Some wards do have beds.

Once in the ward not allowed out till treatment has finished. Less risk of bad hygiene.

    Some wards bring snacks around.

Like most things waiting is the worst.

Hope you manage OK on first treatment then you'll have a better idea from then on.

Good luck and best wishes for the future.

    Billy

P.s plenty of drink helps before hand, but not to much or you'll be running to toilet all the time.

That's unless nurse tells you differently.

  • Hi there

    Good user name!

Anyway down to business....although I was a more frequent flyer at the chemo unit end of 2019 I still go there every month, its quite different post blummin' CV19.  If your experience is anything like mine you will find all the nurses really helpful, willing to chat ( I did...a lot!) and eager to make sure you are as comfortable as you can possibly be.

I took along some stuff to keep me warm, even though some treatments were September, with some chemo drugs they can zap you a bit and bring on chills, you'll know how you respond when you do!  Am not familiar with your particular chemo drug but hopefully you've been given some reading material as to what to expect during the chemo, if not I would contact your support team ( Ihad a breast cancer nurse, hopefully you have something similar?) and ask them the same questions as you're asking here as they are well placed to be able to answer as well and should deffo be able to confirm eating before query.  I took food with me (as am a glutton) and hopefully you can too, but again, I'd ask as you may find out that you may not want to eat?

You could also ask to have a look around the chemo unit although not sure whether that would come off in these CV19 times but I'd ask anyway.

Good luck with treatment, and hope you're able to have some fun on the chemo unit as I did and do!

    Sam
