Fibroadenoma turned out to be cancer?

Just had a biopsy which was really painful as I have breast implants and they struggled to get it. They were confident it’s just a fibroadenoma but I’m still stressing. Has anyone been told it’s just a fibroadenoma and it turned out to be malignant?

  • Thank you! This has calmed my nerves a lot. They didn't seem really worried or tell me to prepare myself for bad news when I was there on Monday but I'm still worried that there is a tumour growing inside it that they couldn't see on the ultrasound.
I'm just trying to keep myself really busy over the next couple of days and trying to distract myself but my anxiety is really getting the better of me

  • Hi,

Yes it's horrible the waiting. One minute I was ok the next I'd convinced myself I was going to die!

Even after the results I was convinced they had got it wrong.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on mine and I won't hesitate to go back to doctors if I think it's changing.

They are also testing everyone at the moment my doctor said because of people being to scared to go to the doctors because of Covid.

Please come back and let me know how it goes or if you need anyone to talk to. Kerry x

  • I'm exactly the same, it's really horrible!
oh bless you, yeah that's the best thing to do

oh really? That's interesting but makes me a bit less worried about them testing me

I will do, thank you so much :) x

  • So I got my results back, thankfully it’s only a Fibroadenoma But they want to do surgery to remove it anyway given it’s so big! I’m assuming this is going to be a lumpectomy? Does anyone have any advice for surgery/what the expect etc?
  • Hi,

So glad it's turned out OK. How big did they say it was? Mine is 1.8 cm at the minute. I don't know how they remove them hope someone can answer for you.

  •

    HI Anniek,

Many thanks for your update. I am so glad that your results were benign. It is always a scary time waiting for your results, but it is always great to get a good outcome. I'm delighted for you.

    Best wishes,

    Jolamine xx

  • it's 5cm so pretty big!! When I first discovered it 7 years ago, it was 2cm so it's always been quite big.
I'm assuming from the googling I've done that it'll be a lumpectomy but I have no idea if it'll be under local or general yet and also, because of COVID, there are extra complications. So I have to be really careful for 2 weeks with social distancing and then 48 hours before I get a COVID test and as long as that is negative, I have to self isolate until the surgery

  • Mine was 4.5cm, found Nov 19 when I went to have a check on right breast (which turned out to be a cyst,).. Was shocked that they found lump on left side and had biopsy. It was fibroadenoma and after about three cancellations due to being bumped down priority and Covid I finally had it removed in July. General anaesthetic, in and out same day. Incision around nipple. Healing well...glad to have it over with. My mum had mastectomy and will be on medication the rest of her life and I have lost cousins around the same age.

  • Oh poor you that must have been a surprise! Glad it was nothing nasty and that you've had it removed now.
How long did they recommend to have off work/not drive/not exercise?

  • So, I have an update. I had surgery yesterday and wanted to but a post on for anyone who has to go and have the same, as I don't feel like I was told anything about going in, in terms of what to bring, what to expect etc.
At the moment things are slightly different because of COVID. I had to social distance vigilantly for 14 days and then self isolate after my COVID swab on Friday (op on Monday)

when I went in, I had to wear a mask right up until I was going into surgery but that was okay.

The things I wish I'd been told to bring: dressing gown and slippers for walking along to surgery

Things I'm glad I googled to bring/do: non-underwired bras (I got mine in Asda for £16 for 2 and they've been great), a button up shirt (I got an oversized PJ one from Tesco), my iPad and headphones to watch stuff on whilst I waited, and a book. You need to take all jewellery off and any nail varnish.

Questions to ask your surgeon: will I need a drain (I thankfully didn't but a friend of mine did and said it was a shock waking up with one in as no-one had said to her that was a possibility), how long you'll need off work (I got so many different answers to this leading up to it from various people on the phone, my surgeon told me 1-2 weeks depending on how I'm feeling)

What happened on the day: I got there at 7:30, had the normal checks like blood pressure, heart rate, temp, etc. And the nurse asked me a lot of pre-op questions and went through some stuff with me, and then I got visited by the surgeon who marked the correct side and where the lump was, and then the anaesthetist came to see me to explain what would happen.
I was second on the list and I think I got into the pre-op room at about 10:15. The nurse went with me from the ward which was nice as it was a familiar face. Then they checked my details again, then I got a canular put in and put under general anaesthetic.
When I woke up I was in the recovery room in a bed, with an oxygen mask on. They usually keep you there half an hour but I was in a lot of pain when I woke up so they gave me some IV painkillers and kept me there for an hour.
I then went back to the ward in the bed, they watched me eat and drink, and monitored all my vitals. I then got moved from bed to chair for a bit and then was allowed home at about 5ish. I was kept in longer as my temperature spiked so they had to monitor that and make sure it came down before I was allowed to leave.

I'm not in as much pain as I thought I would be, they gave me plenty of painkillers to take home with me, and you have to wear these v beautiful compression socks for 2 weeks (so that'll be fun if I'm back to work next week!)

if anyone reading this thread is having surgery and is worried, don't be, but feel free to contact me about it as well!
