Hair Loss and Wigs

Hi,

So I've had my head in the sand about this a little bit. My doctor has confirmed that I'll lose all my hair after session 3 or session 4 of chemo and I just completed my second week today. So I need some advice.

I've bought a couple of lovely big floppy sun hats made with UPF50 + material. I'm in Vienna, Austria, so we are going to have lots of warm days. The doctor told me just to be careful with sunscreen but that none of my tablets will make my skin more sensitive.

I have a brochure for wigs but I'm not too keen on them but I could still pop past and check them out. The language barrier can be an issue

So what I want to know is, what did others do with full hair loss, all suggestions and general info on dealing with it welcome.

Thanks in advance :)

  • Hi, I must admit I love all my turbans, I have so many now ( from Amazon) don't forget you will need one for bed too, surprising how cold your head gets at night!

How you getting on with chemo? Xxxx

  • I getting ready for hair loss too! Ive bought hats and accessories (including two sleep hats) from

    www.annabandana.co.uk

really very affordable and quick delivery in U.K. Might be worth a look.

  • I got an artificial hair wig but found it mostly too hot in the summer.  Indoors and out of daylight hours I mostly just went bald.  Also I already had a selection of chiffon-type scarves for protecting my shoulders from the sun on days that were too hot for sleeved tops so used them as head scarves in daylight hours.  Went on to buy some more scarves too.

Later last year, as it was getting cold enough to wear a wig more often, I did opt to purchase a real hair wig.  They are more expensive, but I am an identical twin and the difference was difficult for my (then) toddler nephew.  The real hair range had an option so much closer to my real colour and previous stye (only time in my life that having deep red hair has been a real pain!).  I still don't wear it loads, but a reasonable amount at the moment as my hair is at that difficult length now, and probably will be for some time (it's come back as curly as it was before).  Still, it will start to get too warm here very soon for hair and a wig on top, so I suspect I will end up with a short fringe peeking out of a headscarf for most of the rest of this year.

Hope things are going well for you with treatment etc.?

  • Hi Marlyn,

My mum's visiting this week so she came with me to the wig shop. The lady was very nice, the language barrier wasn't a big problem and we saved a good amount as the insurance covered about €300 - wow!

It was emotionally quite difficult but the lady was very helpful and found me a wig that was very close to my own style but a slightly different colour. It won't make me look washed out!

I didn't think about the evenings! I'll have a look on Amazon, thanks for the tip!

I had my second chemo yesterday and my CT scan today. I'm needle free until Wednesday now :)

Hope you're having a good week xx

  • Thanks Christina, I'll have a look at the website.

I'm not sure how to save my hair going everywhere in the week it falls out completely. Maybe a hair net for the evening.

Good luck with your hair journey. Happy to listen if you need to vent.

    Paula xx

  • Thanks LJ,

That's a lot of info. I've just finished my 2nd chemo session and had a CT scan today. Needle free until Wednesday now :)

You sound like a positive lady, keep it up!

    Best,
