Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Hi justxa quick update.  Had Muga Scan yesterday.  All good and told heart is working as it should phew!!.  Pic fitted today and visited Ward where I am going to be treated.  Had good informative meeting with Ward Manager altho side effects seem never ending and quite daunting.  I am having everything at once Docetaxel, Carboplatin and Phesgo injection!!   District Nurse to visit to give 5 days of injections too.  Face to face meeting tomorrow with Oncologist and sign consent then all go on Friday.  Going to be a long 18 weeks.  After my chemo I'm have mastectomy and lymph nide clearance.  Unfortunately I cannot have a reconstruction  since I have inflammatory cancer.  Such a lot to get my head around.

I hope your meeting goes well tomorrow and they can treat your wound.

Thank you all again for your information.

  • Hi  ROBIN71, great to hear that all was good with your Muga scan. It's good that you now have your PICC in place, ready for the start of your treatment. You asked in your previous post about the injections given after chemo. These are filgrastim injections to raise white blood cells, as these help boost immune system. My husband did these for me, as I didn't want to do them myself.  Are these what the district nurse is coming in to give you, or are they for something else? My phesgo started at the same time as when I started docetaxel, I think this is the norm when on phesgo. I'm having my 9th phesgo injection this evening, which will be halfway through for me. I hope all goes well on Friday, let me know how you get on. Xx

  • Hi Pippin yes I do believe it is the filgrastim injections that the District Nurse will do.  I didn't want to do these and don't think my husband would like to do them either.  You never know he may do later.  Xx

  • Hi may I ask where did you get your Polybalm from. Xx

  • I buy it directly from polybalm site, they deliver really quickly. You can go on YouTube and watch video about polybalm, it's really informative. Also, if you have any questions, you can message polyblm and they get back to you really quickly. I have done this on several occasions. Xx

Hi Pippin 24 I have been following all you ladies on here from the very start of your journey's. I was diagnosed in March. I started my chemotherapy end of May finished that and just had my surgery yesterday got discharged the same day also got a drain too.

How long did your drain stay in for?

I am not liking it at all.

Hi Nedb, sorry to hear about your diagnosis in March. It's great that you have finished chemo and had your surgery, hope you are feeling OK. My recent surgery was mastectomy with diep flap reconstruction and I was in hospital 5 days. I only had one drain, which was removed three days after my surgery, so before leaving the hospital. I know others have had drains in for longer, I think it depends on how much fluid is draining, I'm assuming you have to measure it. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Take care. Xx

Yeah it has to be less than 50ml yesterday it was 22ml today in the morning it was 20ml and in the evening need to see what that will be. You have to date, time and measure it and record it on the paper hospital gave. Don't like it at all can't sleep with it it always in the way of anything you are doing. Going to the bathroom is a mission.
