Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Hi everyone, just thought I'd give you an update, as I had my post op assessment today. It was the best possible news I could have had. They took 20 lymph nodes out, none of which had cancer showing. There was no sign of either tumour and no cancer cells in any of the breast tissue. They still want me to have radiotherapy as a precautionary measure and to reduce the risk of cancer coming back. Hope you are all OK. Xx

  • Hi Pippin.  This is the best news ever.  How wonderful for you and your family you must be so relieved.  Radiotherapy will seem like a breeze after everything you have endured so far.
I used iodine patches in my troublesome scars they worked a treat.   I'm also booked on moving on course January and February as was advised active treatment needed to have ended.

im really struggling with bone pain.  It seems to be increasing -  I'm back in chemo ward today for next zometa infusion and first lot of bloods since July !!   I had a wobble last week - was due to see oncologist in October so phoned to see when my appointment might be to be told probably not until end December.  I explained amount of pain I was in and histology result having found more cancer and how I wanted to speak directly with oncologist.  Reception queried if I needed urgent MRI scan - yet not being seen in timescales.
Anyhow I am now seeing oncologist tomorrow.  I'm hoping it is the medication but do feel anxious again - it's never ending

anyhow I've uplifted by your news. It really is fantastic

    xx

  • Hi NGS, hope all goes smoothly for you today, with your zometer infusion. It's understandable that you get the odd wobble, especially when you have been expecting an imminent appointment, only to be told you have to wait another couple of months. So pleased they have now given you an appointment for tomorrow, I hope they will be able to relieve some of your anxiety. Let me know how you get on.

I have an appointment tomorrow for a wound check, it really does not seem to be improving. It is only a small section in the middle of tummy wound, but it is still gaping, although not infected. I have been using iodine strips for the past week, but doesn't seem to have changed much. Going to ask tomorrow if there is an option to stich this area.  I agree about it never ending, seems as if  you get over one issue, only for it to be replaced by another. Stay strong  we will get through this. Xx

  • Hi justxa quick update.  Had Muga Scan yesterday.  All good and told heart is working as it should phew!!.  Pic fitted today and visited Ward where I am going to be treated.  Had good informative meeting with Ward Manager altho side effects seem never ending and quite daunting.  I am having everything at once Docetaxel, Carboplatin and Phesgo injection!!   District Nurse to visit to give 5 days of injections too.  Face to face meeting tomorrow with Oncologist and sign consent then all go on Friday.  Going to be a long 18 weeks.  After my chemo I'm have mastectomy and lymph nide clearance.  Unfortunately I cannot have a reconstruction  since I have inflammatory cancer.  Such a lot to get my head around.

I hope your meeting goes well tomorrow and they can treat your wound.

Thank you all again for your information.

  • Hi  ROBIN71, great to hear that all was good with your Muga scan. It's good that you now have your PICC in place, ready for the start of your treatment. You asked in your previous post about the injections given after chemo. These are filgrastim injections to raise white blood cells, as these help boost immune system. My husband did these for me, as I didn't want to do them myself.  Are these what the district nurse is coming in to give you, or are they for something else? My phesgo started at the same time as when I started docetaxel, I think this is the norm when on phesgo. I'm having my 9th phesgo injection this evening, which will be halfway through for me. I hope all goes well on Friday, let me know how you get on. Xx

  • Hi Pippin yes I do believe it is the filgrastim injections that the District Nurse will do.  I didn't want to do these and don't think my husband would like to do them either.  You never know he may do later.  Xx

  • Hi may I ask where did you get your Polybalm from. Xx

  • I buy it directly from polybalm site, they deliver really quickly. You can go on YouTube and watch video about polybalm, it's really informative. Also, if you have any questions, you can message polyblm and they get back to you really quickly. I have done this on several occasions. Xx
