Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

    Hi,

Yes definitely no sickness thank god! Still the weird taste in my mouth and feel a little lightheaded at times but just trying to eat regularly and take daily walks etc all while entertaining my kids!!.

I only took the co-codomol just once before each injection and i only needed 3 injections this time around as didn't have the full dose due to the weird allergy i had...so it hasn't had too bad an effect luckily. Sorry you've been in so much pain with them, have you got laxatives etc to take with the co-cocodomol?....

I do need to physch myself up for the injections, weirdly today i've had some pain in my hip bone but who knows if that's related..my left arm also feels a bit heavy/weird...i think i just have to try not to think about it too much as otherwise i'm going to drive myself mad worrying about every sympton, pain, feeling!! do wonder what all these drugs are doing to my body though. I'm not very good at taking medication at the best of times and now my poor body has been hit by everything!!!  It's a lot isn't it!

Thinking of you for the next round. Is yours tomorrow? How are you feeing? xx

  • Right my lovely, beautiful, inspirational warriors. I am getting my bag ready for my picc line and chemo tomorrow. (Sounds like i am there all day) What are you tips to take. I have reading books, ipads, headphones and power banks. Hand cream, mouth wash and bonjela, tissues, lip balm, and wet wipes.

What are we thinking for snacks, drinks etc and anything else I may have missed. I can't have cold cap as my chemo is weekly.

  • Ah you're going to smash it!...Weirdly i was in there from 9am - 4pm and barely had time to read anything! Distracted by nurses coming and going, cold capping etc but going forward i would definitely say some magazines, maybe some crosswords or something...are you cold capping? It's quite hard to plug any headphones in if you are..boiled sweets can also help, they told me to suck on those. Lip balm also good, my lips and mouth have been very dry and then maybe just a nice snuggly scarf/pashmina just for a bit of comfort..I didn't have much of an appetite my first round but crackers, cheese and cucumber have been my cravings and salt and vinegar crisps! and also try to drink lots of water.

Really hope it goes welll. Are you having EC chemo? xx

  • Awww fab Greeny thank you, No unable to cold cap has having chemo weekly, so should be able to wear headphones/ear buds. I am having Pembrolizumab, Paclitaxel and Carboplatin (and possible Zoledronic acid) for the first 12 weeks, and then on to EC hun x

  • Oh good you can plug yourself in..lots of good podcasts perhaps? Oh sorry had totally missed that you’re having weekly first then EC!   Really hope you breeze through the weekly’s..let us know how you’re getting on but sending all the positive vibes your way. Thinking of you. Really appreciating this little community on here  xx

  • Thank you, all went well. Did try and respond from the hospital, but didn't seem to go through. Hope you're feeling OK. Xx

  • Hi MadhatterC, good luck for tomorro, hope all goes well. I also took a neck pillow, which I have used both times, when listening to music. Also took a blanket, which so far haven't needed. Sounds like you're all set and great that you're having your PICC line put in on the day. I spoke to a lady today who had just had hers done and she said it was fine. Keep in touch, would like to know how you get on. Xx

  • Hi all, Second treatment now completed and all went well. They did struggle bit to get a vein, but got it on second attempt. Pleased to be getting the port next week, to avoid any future vein issues. I had drunk loads of water, but didn't seem to make any difference, just kept having to go to the loo! Hope everyone is doing OK. Xx
