Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Good luck tomorrow Rufusblue. You’ve got this! Sorry your partner can’t come in, maybe worth asking again and explain how anxious you are? You can totally do this though…will be thinking of you and we are here when you need xx

    Hi!!

Just feeling very nauseous …but seems worse in the mornings…think it’s starting to ease a little, hoping so anyway!!! My kids break up for Easter today so need to be feeling a tad more sprightly!

hoping my new drugs don’t make me feel so sick! …otherwise haven’t had any other symptons just a bit tired so can’t really complain! And have managed to get out for walks, fresh air definitely helps!

good luck on Tuesday. Sending strength and positive vibes your way for an easy round! Will be thinking of you xx

  • Pippin 24, I quite agree waiting for scan results causes added worries,  hope and pray for all of us that the treatment does as it should xx

  • Hi Greeny80, my scan isn't scheduled until the end of April, so a little while yet. Not sure how long results will take after, hopefully not too long. I did have a chat to the breast care nurse yesterday, who told me they always do a follow up scan if they find anything on first one, if you've not had one before. They apparently need it as a comparison. She did reassure me that small things do come up on many peoples scans and is not uncommon. I will have to try and put it out of my mind or I'll drive myself mad. As you say I should concentrate on next round of chemo and hopefully that will go as well as the first. Also due to have my port fitted which will distract me a little  Hair is coming out quite quickly. I'm so glad I had it shaved, it's definitely better than long strands coming away in my hands. I really hope the nausea wears off soon for you, I'm sure getting out in the fresh air will be doing you good. Finger's crossed next type of chemo will be better for you. Take care and let me know how things go. Xx

  • It's great to have all you lovely people to chat to and share experiences with. It really does help to chat to people, who know how you are feeling. Keep us posted on how you get on. Xx

  • Hi , had my 1st treatment,  it was both pembrolizumab immunotherapy and the paclitaxel,  wasn't as bad as I thought it would be,  met 2 lovely women who are in exactly the same position as myself with triple negative breast cancer and it gave me a little bit of hope as one of them has been stage 4 since 2012 and still going strong,  hope you're all  feeling well ! xx

  • Awww hope all went well today and lovely news to hear regarding the others ladies  I am having the same as you next Tuesday. Also having by picc line fitted first thing that day. Keep us posted on how you are and here if you want to just download.

  • So glad to hear that your first treatment went well. So nice that you got to speak to the ladies who are going through the same thing. It must have been so reassuring to hear that one lady is still doing well, despite being diagnosed stage four since 2012. I also find that so reassuring  to hear. I had my phone consultation with oncologist today. She said my next treatment can go ahead on Monday. However, she did say that my liver function is elevated, so they will need to keep an eye on it. I don't know what happens if it gets any worse, with regards to my treatment. Will just have to wait and see. Take care and have a lovely weekend. Xx

  • Hi Rufusblue,

I am glad to hear that you now have your first chemo behind you and that it wasn't as bad as you expected it to be. It is always reassuring when you meet others who are doing well with treatment - a little reassurance goes a long way.

As you know, we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Pippin,

I am sorry to hear that your liver function is elevated, but glad to hear that your next cycle can still go ahead. As you say, it's a case of 'wait and see', but let's hope that this doesn't throw any gremlins into the works.

I hope that all goes well for you on Monday and that you're still coping well with the hats and scarves.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
