Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Having a stressful day today. Had my pre chemo consultation by phone today. Went well with lots of information given about what to expect.  However, I did forget to mention about some niggling breast pain I've been having. They come and go, sometimes slightly shooting pain. Did phone breast care nurses last week, who said probably due to all the biopsies I had. They were done a few weeks ago, so wondered if pains would only start happening in the last week. So annoyed with myself, even had it written down. I know I can mention on Monday, but will now have to go through two more days of stress!!

  • Hi Pippin 24, I think every little niggling pain is a worry when you're in the position that we are, try not to worry hopefully the chemotherapy will start to work killing all of the harmful cancer cells,  hope everything goes well for you on Monday,   I'm anxious at the moment waiting for my PET scan results on Friday the 8th xx

  • I am feeling much better thank you and now ready for treatment  number 2. It's a shame they won't let your partner in with you, maybe if you tell them you're anxious they would make an exception. They told me my husband couldn't come in, but I noticed a couple of other people had someone with them. Sending you a big hug. Xx

  • I also received an appointment for April today for a ct thorax with contrast. Had a bit of a panic at first as I know they are checking the lung nodules they previously saw. I then remembered they did tell me they would be repeating a scan in three months. It's still scary though and will be another round of waiting for results. They will obviously be checking if they've got bigger and if the cancer has spread. It does seem like as fast as you relax about one thing, another one  takes it's place.  Xx

  • Hey Pippin,

just read your message to Rufusblue..sorry you’ve had a bit of a panic with the cat thorax appt but it’s good they’re staying on top of this. Do you know how long you’ll have to wait for the results? I agree the waiting can be the hardest part…but also you’re now on Chemo so that will be working everywhere in your body too so hopefully killing anything else not wanted in your body. Keeping everything FIRMLY crossed that the results come back quickly and that they’re clear. Concentrate on your next round. You’ve got this and it sounds like your first round went well so really hoping round 2 is more of the same.

    how’s your hair doing?

im still feeling pretty nauseaous, seems to be worse in the mornings but I can feel it easing a little and I’m getting out to walk the dog every day and enjoying the slightly warmer weather which is good. Hoping my next cocktail of drugs doesn’t make me feel so sick!!!

Sending big hugs good luck next week, let us know how you get on with chemo2, Picc line and the thorax test. Will be thinking of you  xx

  • Good luck tomorrow Rufusblue. You’ve got this! Sorry your partner can’t come in, maybe worth asking again and explain how anxious you are? You can totally do this though…will be thinking of you and we are here when you need xx

  • Pippin 24, I quite agree waiting for scan results causes added worries,  hope and pray for all of us that the treatment does as it should xx

  • Hi Greeny80, my scan isn't scheduled until the end of April, so a little while yet. Not sure how long results will take after, hopefully not too long. I did have a chat to the breast care nurse yesterday, who told me they always do a follow up scan if they find anything on first one, if you've not had one before. They apparently need it as a comparison. She did reassure me that small things do come up on many peoples scans and is not uncommon. I will have to try and put it out of my mind or I'll drive myself mad. As you say I should concentrate on next round of chemo and hopefully that will go as well as the first. Also due to have my port fitted which will distract me a little  Hair is coming out quite quickly. I'm so glad I had it shaved, it's definitely better than long strands coming away in my hands. I really hope the nausea wears off soon for you, I'm sure getting out in the fresh air will be doing you good. Finger's crossed next type of chemo will be better for you. Take care and let me know how things go. Xx

  • It's great to have all you lovely people to chat to and share experiences with. It really does help to chat to people, who know how you are feeling. Keep us posted on how you get on. Xx

  • Hi , had my 1st treatment,  it was both pembrolizumab immunotherapy and the paclitaxel,  wasn't as bad as I thought it would be,  met 2 lovely women who are in exactly the same position as myself with triple negative breast cancer and it gave me a little bit of hope as one of them has been stage 4 since 2012 and still going strong,  hope you're all  feeling well ! xx

  • Awww hope all went well today and lovely news to hear regarding the others ladies  I am having the same as you next Tuesday. Also having by picc line fitted first thing that day. Keep us posted on how you are and here if you want to just download.

  • So glad to hear that your first treatment went well. So nice that you got to speak to the ladies who are going through the same thing. It must have been so reassuring to hear that one lady is still doing well, despite being diagnosed stage four since 2012. I also find that so reassuring  to hear. I had my phone consultation with oncologist today. She said my next treatment can go ahead on Monday. However, she did say that my liver function is elevated, so they will need to keep an eye on it. I don't know what happens if it gets any worse, with regards to my treatment. Will just have to wait and see. Take care and have a lovely weekend. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

I am sorry to hear that your liver function is elevated, but glad to hear that your next cycle can still go ahead. As you say, it's a case of 'wait and see', but let's hope that this doesn't throw any gremlins into the works.

I hope that all goes well for you on Monday and that you're still coping well with the hats and scarves.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Ho Jolamine, just wondered if you know of anyone else that has had problems with liver function issues and what the outcome was. Might be worth starting a new thread asking this question, to see if anyone else has encountered this. Xx

  • Glad you can go ahead with treatment on Monday,  hopefully the liver function is just a minor blip, hope you have a lovely weekend too xx

  • Thank you, hope you enjoy your weekend too. Will post an update after treatment on Monday. Xx

  • Hi Pippin

so pleasec to hear your treatment can go ahead as planned.  I have my bloods Monday before treatment Tuesday.  Beginning to feel a bit apprehensive now.
I think I am most concerned about the injections again.
sorry to hear your liver function is elevated.  I recall when I saw my oncologist he explained about monitoring my vital organs and mentioned if there was concern they would adjust the dosage of chemo he said they always start at 100% but can then adjust accordingly so wonder if they may suggest something like this for you if need be.

it’s great they are monitoring everything for you

    wishing you well for Monday

    xxx

  • Thanks for your reply, it has given me some reassurance. I had been worried that they might just stop treatment, if things got any worse. But you're probably right, they would perhaps just reduce dosage a bit. I don't know why I always think the worst, I must try to be more positive. I will be thinking of you on Tuesday, and hope that your reaction to injections isn't so bad this time. Xx

  • Hey Pippin,

So glad you can go ahead nexct week. Really hope you can enjoy a lovely weekend this weekend and hope all goes well for ro0und 2. I have faith you'll sail through it like the first round...

It's great that they're keeping an eye on your liver but  i agree as NGS says they will most likely just tweak your dose slightly and keep an eye. When I had my allergic reaction to one of the drugs they immediately said they would switch to another one, I was then so worried about being undertreated and not getting the strongest drug that they had initially wanted to put me on but they have assured me i won't be, i hvae to trust that.... but they also said they have lots of different drugs and lots of different strengths and options and they will 100% tailor it to you and your body. Hopefully your liver will be totally fine after the next one and it was just a little reaction to the first round...your body may acclimatise to the drugs and you can continue as planned.

Sending you a big hug for next week...always here to chat xx

  • Hi Greeny80, you're right, they will probably just adjust the dosage or change to a different type of chemo. My first thought was that they would just stop treatment, which really worried me. With you they are changing your chemo, so I'm now reassured that they could do this for me. I too have been eating stuff I wouldn't normally go for, especially chocolate, which I normally rarely eat. Hope you enjoy all the birthday celebrations over the next couple of weeks, it's certainly nice to have something to look forward to. Pleased to hear you are now feeling better and are getting lots of fresh air, I find this helpful too. Xx

  • Good luck for number 2 tomorrow xx
