Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • This group is an invaluable lifeline.  You’ve got this and we’ve got you xxx

  • Greeny80 thank you so much,  I have got so much support but I'm sad for how it affects them too, I'm sure you'll all agree it's not just all about us it's everyone who loves and cares about us, still not got a date to start and it's got to be at Nottingham which is horrendous for parking but I must get myself together again and be positive xx

  • Hello Pippin, glad to hear the side affects are ok, it is very frustrating when you want to sleep but you can't. I can recommend podcasts and audiobooks.

I had my first Oncology appointment today. The size has increased go 7.2cm now and they are worried about lumps on the lymphomas. So now booked in for a full body and head ct scan next week. Chemo will start on the 26th March. It 4 3 weeks cycles of carboplatin, paclitaxel and also Zoledronic acid and the  straight on to EC and paclitaxel for another 4 3 week cycle. Also been told.i will have a picc line and a wig referral. Feeling like life sucks big time at the moment. But I am pushing myself to try and remember how lucky I am with my beautiful daughter and my husband is really trying his best bless even though I am very agitation today.

But any tips on what I should start to be buying and packing to take with me. Please shout. X

  • NGS it certainly is,  you're all amazing,  sending positive thoughts and prayers to everyone xxx

  • It’s so hard when it affects others which inevitably it does, kids, family, husbands, friends..thats super hard. My husband actually had prostate cancer 2 years ago and it was really hard being the carer or the one who wasn’t ill and seeing someone I love going through that…trying to be positive all the time, keeping the house running and supporting him emotionally…so I totally understand how my Husband now feels as the shoe is now on the other foot! Clearly I didn’t want him having all the limelight!! It’s hard when you know others are worrying - I hate that part. BUT I hope it also makes you realise how much you are loved and that’s very special and heartwarming. They’ll be ok…as will you be!

  • Thank you for your kind words and putting things into perspective you've seen things from both sides , hoping and praying we can get through this xx

  • I am quite pleased with how things are going so far. Think most of us will have struggles during one part of our journey or another. Good to have a site like this to share our experiences. Think there will always be niggles and worries about things moving forward, to be expected after going through so much anxiety I suppose. Keep me posted on how things are going for you. Xx

  • Hi MadhatterC, good to hear you now have a date for chemo to start, I felt better once I new a date. When I went into chemo suite , the guy asked me if I was moving in! I had a small holdall which contained, blanket (which I didn't actually need), kindle, phone, headphones. Also took water and a few snacks. Good that they are doing a full body and head scan, I had these too. They did find a couple of nodules on my lung and a cyst on my liver. They didn't seem too concerned though, as said they've seen a lot of nodules since covid. Going to re scan in 3 months, so obviously still a worry in the back of my mind. Great that you have a lot of support, I too have a good support system. I've been told my request for a port has now been agreed, so just waiting for a date. I'm hoping it will be before next treatment. If I have to wait too long, it won't seem like it's worth bothering to have it done. Good luck with the picc line and choosing your wig. I felt a lot better once I had my wig and hats at the ready. Please do keep in touch to let me know how you're doing, feels less lonely when sharing experiences. Xx

  • HI Pippin,

I'm delighted to hear that your your request for a port has now been agreed, although it would have been better if this could have been done before your chemo started. I hope that you get it soon, before it becomes a pointless exercise.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, it was really good to hear that the port has been agreed. But unless it's put in before next treatment, I'm not sure it will be worth going through it. They said if I didn't hear something within a week I should chase it up, so might give a ring on Monday. Feeling quite good so far, with no sickness. Have been quite tired, but more to fo with sleep loss due to hot flushes and coming off hrt. Having a few constipation issues also, so might  seek advice on this fairly soon. Have been going for a walk daily and feeling quite positive, with how it's going so far. Early days I know. Xx
