Feel scared and lost

Am 72 and just diagnosed with breast cancer after biopsy, awaiting follow up and treatment plan appointment next week. I live on my own - my wonderful son has his own cancer problems and is 300 miles away - am lucky to have good friends locally but still feel alone. I thought I was a strong person but realise now Im not and am constantly anxious . I think it could help me to be in contact with others who have been on this path, and hope that at some point in the future I can help someone else. Just now I'm finding it hard to just get through the days until my appointment, let alone thinking any further.

I'm so grateful to anyone who might read or reply to this post.

Thank you

  • Hello.

I do think it's very difficult waiting for results and appointments. It's hard to be strong when you are facing the unknown but I'm sure you will reconnect with your inner strength . I do agree that taking it a day at a time is helpful. You can call in the support of your breast nurses . They are in my experience very supportive and knowledgeable.  I was diagnosed with a Triple Negative tumour when I had my second year follow up mammogram  after I'd had  a lumpectomy for an ER positive cancer in lockdown.I found this very difficult at first .but I am in a much more positive frame of mind . Am now discharged to annual follow ups .  I do feel for you.  Hoping all goes well at your appointment and that once you know your treatment plan you will feel more comfortable because things will actually be happening to help with your recovery.  Sending lots of positive thoughts and good wishes.

  • HI Voirrey,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear that you had a second cancer and understand just how disparaging that can feel. I had a second cancer in the same breast, just a year after the original one. I too found this very difficult to cope with at first, but am in a better place now. I have been very fortunate, in that I am now 14 years down the line and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. Did you have another lumpectomy or a mastectomy? I had a double mastectomy for my second bout.

Sending you my best wishes and hoping that things are more straightforward from here on in.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Viorrey, sorry to hear that you had to go through thus on mire than occasion. Hearing your story gives so much hope that it can be beaten. Xx

  • Thank you Jolamine . I had a mastectomy.  The tumour was close to the chest wall and I think that my breast was so small that a lumpectomy would have been difficult.  My chemo had been stopped after my second time as it made me so ill and my oncologist was concerned about bowel issues. I was quite happy to have the procedure done.

The operation went well . Recall from last mammogram on other breast  but it turned out to be calcification.  A huge relief.

I'm glad you are doing so well .

    Very best wishes

  • Hi Voirrey,

I felt better after my mastectomies, as I felt that as much as possible had been removed and there was less chance of recurrence. I am glad to hear that you were happy to have the procedure done too. Did you have any reconstruction? What a pity that you had to stop chemo. I see that you are now on annual monitoring. Is there any immuno-therapy that might help?

You must have been worried when you got a recall for other breast. I'm so glad to hear that this was just calcification and know what a great relief this must have been.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you.  It's hard to get your head round at first..

Am grateful for the help from the hospital and the brilliant nurses .

Wishing you well on your journey. Let us know how you are going on, Pippin

  • Thank you, will update after my oncology appointment xx

  • Just a quick update after oncology appointment. I will be having 7 cycles EC-T chemo. 3 cycles of EC then 4 of T (docetaxel). Was offered a picc line, but I have requested a port instead. Although a port is more invasive to set up, there is less maintenance and hospital visits involved. Just waiting for a start date, should be end of Feb/beginning of March. Also need date for port fitting, meeting with chemo nurses and bloods before chemo starts. Would also like to get my wig sorted as soon as I can. Really just want to get on with it now, I've had enough of all the waiting!
