Chemotherapy

Spent 3 hours at the hospital yesterday on a demystifying chemo day. It was helpful, learnt more about white and red cells and platelets and lots of other info.  Also saw the chemo treatment room. Chatted to the wig lady, so feel a bit more in control and what to expect.
it's a bit difficult for us as all my previous treatment, scans and masectomy were 20 mins from us, but chemo is 1 hour away. It also means going twice every 3 weeks, once to see the oncologist and once for the treatment. Found out that chemo patients get parking for £2. It cost us £8.20 yesterday, but a small price to pay for all the NHS  treatment. My 1st chemo is next week,  I need to buy a new thermometer as mine is quite old and look up good food to take as snacks to chemo. Any suggestions, with nausea in mind? I shall report back with my experience of chemo,  I am having FEC drugs for breast cancer.
Telling myself I shall sail through it without too many side effects, but no doubt will experience some. Infection seems to be the nurses main concern, but have numbers to ring if at all concerned.

  • Hi silver just noticed your string. Very surprised. I live in Lincolnshire, hospital parking goes to max of £5.00  and oncology room or or to see oncologist to get checked if treatment OK is free.. Good luck with your treatment hope the wig fits. Best wishes for the future........ Billy

  • Hello,

wanted to wish you luck for next week. My first chemo was Feb 14th 2019.

Try out those anti sickness wrist bands, most chemist stock them. And don't forget the strong mints.

Also don't be afraid to ring the chemo line ( I had them on speed dial) it's scary, you don't know what to expect and you don't know if what your feeling is ok....so just ring them and they'll soon advice you.

The unit will stock you up with all sorts, including pills to help you go to the toilet and pills to stop it(!)  chemo messed with me pretty bad in this department. But what did help was a small glass of prune juice every morning. My poor bowels came to a stand still ( sorry....tmi)

Anyway love, get those cycles ticked off....and let us know how you're getting on ? Xx

  • Thank you, I'll def get some wrist bands and some prunes! Be prepared.

And Ill let you know how I get on. Did you feel well anytime within the three weeks, or was the first week the worse? x

  • Yes, parking is expensive here.

  • The first few days were pretty horrible, then in the last week I began to feel normal (ish) ready for the next hit!

My friend sailed through fec chemo, even going to work straight after her infusion...( desk job)

Everyone reacts differently to chemo, I wrote a chemo diary...there was a definite pattern there, it was interesting to read each cycles side effects...
