  • Hi Jennie,

It sounds as if you have had a hard time to get a diagnosis and I am sorry for this. It is unfortunate that chemo hasn't worked for you, but I'm glad to hear that your surgery is coming up soon. I had a lumpectomy, which was followed by a double mastectomy the following year. If it's of any consolation, I recovered easier from the mastectomies than the lumpectomy. It will be a challenging time for you, but it's all "doable" and you'll soon feel better to know that the cancer has been taken away. Do you know what type and stage of cancer you have?

It is now 16 years since I was first diagnosed and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life and I hope that you will too. This can be a lonely time. I'm glad to hear that you have the support of family. Now that you have found this forum, you need never feel lonely again. All of us on this site know what cancer does to you and we are always here for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jennie,

I was terrified about surgery too, but there was really nothing to it. I did have some fluid build up after my surgery and had to have that drained a few times, but that was always a relief, as it reduced the build up of pressure immediately.

The horror stories are in the minority, but it's only these that we seem to hear about. When surgery is successful, people just get on with their lives. Place your trust in your surgeon. These people know what they're doing and they do it day in day out. What you read on google is often poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the more spectacular cases.

What day are you due to have your surgery?
