My dad has got terminal pancreatic cancer

My dad was diagnosed in February with incurable pancreatic cancer it has spread to his liver. I live near my mum & dad and my one sibling my brother lives 140 miles away. I have a really tough job 2 kids and a mega busy life and am finding it hard to support my mum. She is struggling to deal with my dads deteriorating psychological state. His symptoms are that he has got a very swollen abdomen which is uncomfortable. He is on Oxycodone slow release tablets 15mg twice a day. He is having palliative chemotherapy. My dad is 73 and my mum is 70. They have run their own business for 40 years and still work now. My husband has recently taken over the business so that is taking the strain off my parents. I am dreading what is to come, the deterioration. It's heartbreaking. What are your experiences of this dreadful disease?

  • Hi my mum 67 was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in June 2015, with mets to liver. Prognosis was bleak - she could not have surgery and was placed on pallative chemo. After 9 rounds of pallative chemo mets had disappeared from her liver and the Tumor had shrunk by 80% - to date it has laid dormant - but to us dormancy is as good as remission. We take each day a step at a time. Some are positive and upbeat - some are the pits - but remember all you can do is try your best - I have told my story as we come on here looking for hope and inspiration X - forgot to add - I live near my mum - she still works fulltime and my brother lives far away - you will find strength x

  • hi, this is the most positive thing I have read reguarding pancreatic cancer, my dad was diagnosed December (2018) and starts his first round of chemo today, is your mothers still dormant ? Xx

  • just wanted to check in on how you all are xxx

  • Hi how is your dad doing? I recently found out my mum has pancreatic cancer also spread to liver and she has had a lot of pain from it all. I am 30 and have two small children who adore her, she is only 58 and none of this seems real all she had was just pains in her belly too weeks prior to finding out. How are you and your family doing x

  • I’m so sorry to hear about your mum, how is she doing ? And how are you ? Xx

  • how’s your dad doing ? Xxx

  • We lost dad in July, it was very peaceful and me, mum and my brother were with him. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reply, I’m still finding it hard to accept if I’m honest. He was a wonderful man, as many of his friends, colleagues and our family keep telling me.

Although it was a really difficult time and I’d give anything to have him still with us, the time we had after his diagnosis was very special. I told him all of my hopes and dreams and I’m finding strength slowly. Remember a good life is not measured by the length of time a person was here, but the impact they made in their life. I think one thing everyone on this forum shares is that we were losing someone that had a huge impact in our lives. I hope this gives people some comfort, even if they are losing hope xxx

  • Hi, just read your post, my mum was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer Wednesday night this is secondary as they found a tumour may last year she then had the whipple surgery end sept then 6 months chemo which finished in may this year, she almost straight away from june started getting pain in her stomach she described as labour pain she was back and forth to the doctors being treated for constipation!! Then an xray to check for arthritis then back to constipation again!! To her finally giving up and ringing 999 this week to be told its returned with a vengeance and is now terminal,  were an extremely close family and shes the best of the best  were heartbroken and angry that its happening I also have children who adore there nanny and are going to be devastated but at the moment they dont no as there her wishes, shes currently waiting to come home tonight or tomorrow untill we no if shes eligible for treatment and what that will be.  Were being robbed of our amazing mum at so young and it makes me so angry.

    How's your mum doing now?

So sorry to hear of your loss of your dad losing anyone is heartbreaking but a parent is absolutely devastating.

    Sending love xx

  • I am in the same position stories sound the same except it's my dad , told today no treatment will help . It's so hard especially this time of year to keep things normal for he children? How is your mum ?

  • I lost my dad a few weeks ago. He had been poorly for around 8 weeks before he died and we never got around to diagnosis. He actually died of an internal bleed due to a burst stomach ulcer resulting from a helicobacter pylori infection. However, he also had undiagnosed pancreatic cancer. There were massive delays with tests, diagnosis and treatment. Part of me feels very let down.

The other part of me feels relieved my dad didn't know he was really poorly even though his symptoms were severe. He had been told he had helicobacter pylori and gallstones, so he himself didn't know the seriousness of his condition. Knowing dad, he wouldn't have wanted to go through chemo or cancer treatment but I feel cheated that he never got that choice.

Dad died a painful, excruciating death which we were all  and continue to be traumatised by. He kept telling the doctors he was in pain and he was prescribed paracetamol. All of the signs of him having pancreatic cancer were there, he was vomiting, lost weight, severely jaundice, in pain, developed a rash, had pale, smelly stools and tested positive for helicobacter pylori. He attended walk in centres and gp surgery no less than 14 times in 8 weeks. We even had the ambulance out to him on one occasion.

Dad would not let me or mum argue against the doctors insisting the doctors must be right and we were needlessly worrying.

Dad was 68. He leaves behind my mum, my sister, me and 3 grandchildren with another one on the way. We are all totally devestated and saddened. He was a major influence in our family and very much loved by us all. I am incensed and disgusted by the lack of care he received. The coroner has encouraged me to complain to the NHS, there will be an inquest as to the circumstances of what happened.

  • 6 months ago I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that has spread to my liver, my pain is under control with morphine patches and steroids at the moment. I just feel very tired and sweat a lot! I have just had my 5 the round of chemo, apparently it has shrunk the liver tumours and kept the pancreas tumour the same so worth doing for me. I am not so worried about the time I have left (perhaps a year) as the quality. I have had a big party and am making the most of every day I feel able.  Don't pressure your loved one to keep going for longer it may not be what they want.

p.s. I am 60 female and have a great deal of support.

  • My heart goes out to you i lost my dad 12days afer his cancer confirmed, heartbreakingxx

  • So sorry, no time for you to adjust. I have just had a most terrible chemo session (6) and have decided to stop. My quality of life has gone so I really would rather it was over and done with. The suffering is worse than the thought of dying, thank goodness my dear family are supporting me.
