My dad has got terminal pancreatic cancer

My dad was diagnosed in February with incurable pancreatic cancer it has spread to his liver. I live near my mum & dad and my one sibling my brother lives 140 miles away. I have a really tough job 2 kids and a mega busy life and am finding it hard to support my mum. She is struggling to deal with my dads deteriorating psychological state. His symptoms are that he has got a very swollen abdomen which is uncomfortable. He is on Oxycodone slow release tablets 15mg twice a day. He is having palliative chemotherapy. My dad is 73 and my mum is 70. They have run their own business for 40 years and still work now. My husband has recently taken over the business so that is taking the strain off my parents. I am dreading what is to come, the deterioration. It's heartbreaking. What are your experiences of this dreadful disease?

  • Gosh I'm so sorry to hear this.  It really is such a dreadful disease.  Sending you much love.

  • Hi Ksg

I am sorry for your loss, I really am. It will all be a bit of a blur for you for a while. I know we are all different but I still cant believe my husband has gone and I am on my own now. I keep telling myself it wasnt his fault or choice and I  cry so much but take each day as it comes and do things your way not anyone elses.

  • Hello Sue,

Just picked up your link to many responses on pancreatic cancer.

Like you, I also have been through a very similar experience during my wife’s 8 month ordeal of treatments, pain, and as you say awful side effects (and side effects of their treatment) for pancreatic cancer.

It was a very traumatic and difficult time during the last several days when my wife was in hospital with complications (I did have to persevere to manage to get Ann into a Hospice which was very peaceful, but sadly only for 8 hours)

Still wish I could have done more!.

  • 6 months ago I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that has spread to my liver, my pain is under control with morphine patches and steroids at the moment. I just feel very tired and sweat a lot! I have just had my 5 the round of chemo, apparently it has shrunk the liver tumours and kept the pancreas tumour the same so worth doing for me. I am not so worried about the time I have left (perhaps a year) as the quality. I have had a big party and am making the most of every day I feel able.  Don't pressure your loved one to keep going for longer it may not be what they want.

p.s. I am 60 female and have a great deal of support.

  • My heart goes out to you i lost my dad 12days afer his cancer confirmed, heartbreakingxx

  • So sorry, no time for you to adjust. I have just had a most terrible chemo session (6) and have decided to stop. My quality of life has gone so I really would rather it was over and done with. The suffering is worse than the thought of dying, thank goodness my dear family are supporting me.
