NAUSEA WITH CHEMO

Hi

I'm starring chemo next week and I'm very nervous especially about feeling and being sick. Will I feel nausea all the time. I'm thinking about taking Complan so that I don't have to cook food.

  • Hi Matilda

The run up to starting treatment is an anxious time. You may or may not get nausea everyone reacts differently. You will be given tablets to help if you do. Try to eat healthy home cooked meals, if the thought or smell of food cooking puts you off. See if someone else will do it for you failing that there are some good home meals services available and of course ping meals. Try not to rely on complan or nutritional supplements. All the best for your upcoming treatment.

  • Hi Matilda, like Farmer Ed says please eat normal home cooked food, don't rely on complan.  Good luck for next week.  I did not feel nauseous much when I had chemo.  Take the anti nausea tablets even if you don't feel sick.

  • Hello Matilda and thanks for posting

I see that you've been given some good advice already from two of our forum users.

People vary in the side effects they experience from chemotherapy, and because of this it's not possible to tell you if and when you will be affected by nausea.

You will be prescribed anti sickness medication and will be advised to take them regularly to reduce this possible side effect.

There are a number of different anti sickness medications that can help with nausea but sometimes it’s trial and error to get the right combination that will work. We do have some tips on our website about managing nausea which you might find helpful.

It's also best to eat a normal diet where possible. If you do experience nausea, taking your anti sickness medication an hour before you eat may help. If you find the chemotherapy is affecting your appetite, try and eat small meals or snacks.

We have some useful tips on managing diet problems on our website that may be of some help.

I hope this is of some use and I hope your chemotherapy goes well. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
