Fine Needle Biopsy of Thyroid

Hi all,

I'm having one of these next week on some nodules on my throid. I had an ultrasound a week or so ago and she said I had 'many' nodules. Keen to hear from anyone who has had one before. How was it? How long did the results take to come back?

I have a stubbly kind of beard, it was fine for the ultrasound but will they want me clean chaven for this do you think?

Thanks!

  • Sorry can't answer your questions but was wondering how long did you wait for your biopsy apt?

I went to GP when golf ball sized lump appeared suddenly, week later had US (just over 2 weeks ago) that showed a multinodular goitre, with largest nodule at 3.5x2x2cm, just seen ENT consultant this morning and he said he's referring me for FNA so just wondering about how long I now have to wait for that....I'm not too concerned about cancer as I know odds are it isn't, just the fact that the thing is growing before my eyes and is retrosternal so starting to compress important things like trachea, vocal cords etc.

    Ta!

  • Hey,

That's okay! I got my appointment two weeks on from the actual ultrasound so it'll be three weeks and 1 day when I actually get the biopsy done.

  • Ta!

I'll try and be patient then....it's not easy when you have little control over the situation. I work for the NHS so I appreciate there are pathways and processes, but it's still a little frustrating.

A radiologist friend of mine said to expect it to feel a bit like a blood test needle does (but in your neck) and that they may offer a local anaesthetic then you don't feel anything but then that itself is a needle in the neck!

She said tests usually take a couple of weeks to come back after FNA, maybe longer if they run all results through an MDT clinic before consultant sees patient.

My ENT consultant said "I'll see you in a few weeks".

  • Hello, i had a thyroid biopsy done a few years ago, from what I remember it was painless, they used local anaesthetic which was probably the most painful thing. The procedure only lasted a few minutes and the results came back within a week. i hope this helps.

  • I had a biopsy on my thyroid. It felt kinda like a needle sticking into you, like an ordinary sewing needle. A bit of a sting for a few seconds, but nothing major. I went right back to work after it.

I had an appointment the following week to get my results.

Sorry, I don't know about the beard.

Best of luck with your appointment.
