Bleeding from vagina after a bowel movement!

Hi all. I am looking for advice as I am freaking out. Quick background - 30 year old female, mother of 2. (Youngest is 2 years old) both delivered by emergency c section. No previous medical conditions. I last had a smear test done in January 2020 and result came back normal. For the last 6 months or so my periods have been Irregular and most recently I have been spotting a lot in between periods. I have also discovered the connection that every time I have a bowel movement I bleed from my vagina!! I can't find any other explanation for this other than cervical cancer! Anyone experienced this?? TIA!

  • Hi, hope you have found out the cause of this, I had the same thing and turned out I had a polyp on cervix, after treatment the bleeding stopped

  • Hello I went for a smear on Friday which was well overdue, they found what she thought was pollops or vaginal erosion and sent me on a 2 week referral, I'm worried sick, I've just strained to have a bowel movement and have had bleeding from the vagina, I've had stomach ache like a period pain, I have gone through my menopause, I'm so worried I can't eat or sleep

  • Hi dawnann62,

I'm so sorry you are having such a worrying time. I am going through exactly the same.

I too am post menopausal.  I started bleeding 3-4 weeks ago and it does seem to stop.  It goes from brown to red to brown to red again..  opening my bowels always starts it off with red blood again.  I also have symptoms of a bloated belly, constipation,  wind and nausea.  Also period like pain. I went to my gp last Thursday who referred me to the 2ww gynae clinic.  My gp looked quite alarmed when I told her of the bleeding when opening bowels. She said she also notice a slight fullness on my left side of my pelvis? One week on and there has been a mix up with the referral..  I am so stressed and just want to get my scan done so I know what's what.  I'm hoping it's a polyp and nothing like ovarian cancer as my gp suggested ruling out as I have a strong family history of gynae and breast cancer.

  • Hi daffodilyellow,

sorry to hear you are going through the same thing,  the waiting is horrible isn't it, could you please let me know when you have been to gynaecology, I will keep you updated, as you say hopefully it's a pollop as they can cause bleeding and pain, all the best for your appointment x

  • Hi sorry for not replying sooner, but I ended waiting in a&e for 4 hrs last night as my symptoms worsened.   I had red bleeding with large clots after going to the toilet and period like pain.. the gynae consultant was happy with my bloods being normal and normal obs as it meant I wasn't bleeding out .. He has made me an appt for the Rapid Gynae Clinic on Friday for a scan.   Seems forever away!   I will let you what the outcome is and yes, please let me know how you get on .  Good luck x

  • I so sorry to hear this you must have been frightened to death, one good things your bloods were ok, at least your being seen now in a couple of days, good luck and hope everything goes ok, x

  • Hi.   Just an update . I saw the Gynae consultant and had an scan.  Cons showed me an abnormal area and said probably polyp but unable to tell with a scan if thickening is a polyp or endometrial cancer so has referred me for a hysteroscopy .. I have the appt on Wednesday.    He said if it is a polyp they will remove it and send off for testing.  If not they'll take a biopsy anyway.   He told me Polyps are normally benign or if it is anything more sinister , then it is very treatable.
I'm really nervous about Wednesday , but I'm pleased they got me in so soon.

Have you had any news dawnann62.

  • Hello, I had my smear results back on Thursday they came back with no hpv virus so meant no cancer, she asked me to go and see her because I'm still in pain, she said she could see what the nurse had seen on my cervix and now there was an infection there, she said she needed to chase up coloscopy as a matter of urgency (I go tomorrow) I can't understand that I've had a clear smear but she's concerned I have something sinister, she looked at me and said it is treatable, I'm worrying my self sick,

I'm so glad you are on the way to getting sorted and it's a reassurance to know that you are very treatable, good luck on Wednesday x

  • Well that a very good positive result if your smear was all clear.   Are they treating you for an infection.  Have you been referred for a ultrasound scan as well as the colposcopy.
It is so worrying waiting isn't it.  But we've both been given early appts which is a blessing.

Good luck for tomorrow . Please let me know how you get on.
im here if you need to chat  x

  • Hello yes I'm on antibiotics for an infection I'm just praying that is a bad infection they can see, no i havnt been sent for an ultra sound, thank you for chatting to me I really appreciate it, it really helps x

  • I stopped birth control a couple months ago and I have had some abnormal spotting, I saw the gynaecologist and he said everything looked healthy but referred me to ultrasound. I've stopped spotting but I've noticed I've been spotted after a bowel movement. I'm only 31 no kids and I'm petrified I have cancer and I won't ever be able to have children :( it's been 4 weeks and I'm still waiting for an ultrasound appointment to know more I'm going out of my mind

  • Hello my spotting was coming from my cervix, it is Badly infected and breaks away easily, if your gynaecologist has checked all this that is a good sign, please try not to worry the waiting is the hardest part but you will have answers soon xx

  • Hi Dawn

I know your post was a year ago now but I am in a similar position to you. Turning 30 in September and experiencing non menstrual bleeding the week before my period for a while now. Just linked it to defecating and I'm having a panic even had to show my partner the devastation of the toilet bowl!! I'm booked in for a scan on the 27th July but scared that I need one sooner :(

  • Hi all,

28 y/o having the same issue since June of this year.

Went for a smear test, all fine. Bloods came back fine. No sign of a polyp.

October seemed fine, no spotting. But now it's back again. Typically the week before my period during bowel movements, but I'm tracking using the Clue app.

Trying to psych myself up to call the doctors. My doctor has been lovely, not sure why I'm feeling so anxious. I'm just fretting about it a lot and whilst I've tried to talk to people close to me, it doesn't alleviate my stress.

I did think that might be the cause as my gums were bleeding too, and apparently both could be signs of stress. That's partly why I put off speaking to the doctor, thinking it would pass with time.

But it's been 6 months or so now, with just the one month of nothing.

Will call the doctors again when I can and update.

  • Hello, i know this post is quite old but I’m struggling to find any info about it. Wondered what the outcome was? I’m also bleeding after bowel movement and wondering what it could be down too. Had swabs taken on Friday so waiting results but the mind loves to worry.

    thank you

  • Hi I've came across this post and I've had the same with bleeding with bowel movements for about 2 months. I've had a hysteroscopy but everything came bk fine then I had my smear test which took 5 months to come back to say I have high risk of hvp virus and cells have changed on my cervix and there was cells of endometriosis too. I have a Colonoscopy on Thursday and I'm so scared!! My mum and sister have had precancerous cell removered before and my mum died of breast cancer. Reading this makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm no the only one that's had this worry x
  • Hi Murraymints40. Just reading your post as I have been in a similar boat. Heavy periods for a year and since April constant spotting. Not sure if bowl movements / sex cause it because it’s constant now. I had a clear smear in Nov 22, clear bloods last June and a clear ultrasound in feb this year. I had a colposcopy last week and they took a biopsy as there were visible cell changes on my cervix. Absolutely terrified as I’ve never missed a smear and never had anything show up now facing the idea of further treatment. Just sending positive thoughts to you as you wait your appointment…

  • Thank you. It''s horrible the wait. I'm sending u positive thoughts too! I've never missed a smear either always been good with that. Did u have the hvp virus as that's what came back on my smear?

  • No I had nothing show on my smear at all it came back clear. So I was really alarmed when the GP said she could see “redness” on my cervix. The colposcopy clinic didn’t mention ectropion but took a biopsy of the “cells” and told me to wait for the results. The waiting is crippling, I have diagnosed myself with all sorts. I can’t see how I can have had a clear smear 7 months ago and now have all these issues. My GP put the fear of god into me when she told me abnormal cells take 5 years to develop into cancer, me previous smear was 2018 then I had to wait until November 22 due to the covid backlog. She said smears aren’t 100% all the time so if my November 22 smear missed something then we are 5 years on from my previous clear test….

  • Hello, ah the waiting is the worst part. When I had a swab the nurse noted it looked like I had ectropion cervix too and then the doctor said that can be normal and nothing to worry about. Of course I googled as soon as I got home and that did say can cause spotting too. I’m waiting for an ultrasound on my womb and to meet with the gynaecologist. I’ve suffered horrendous periods from the get go, have a bicornuate womb and it took me years to conceive so I’ve always known I’ve got a few issues in that department but always worrying not knowing :(

sending positivity to you both!! X

  • Hi Charlotte :) I a have been having the same issue for a couple months now. Im really stressed out. Did you ever find out what it was ?
