Concerns about bladder cancer.

Hi everyone,

I hope this is ok to post. I'm hoping to find some advice.

Around 8/9 weeks ago I began having an urgency to go to the toilet, I couldn't hold it at all, and I had to urinate very frequently. (I'm 28 years old).

I didn't have any pain going to the toilet but would often feel like I hadn't urinated it all out. Around 2 weeks after this I had pain in my upper back, it felt like it shook my whole ribcage.

I booked a doctors appointment, and did a urine sample and was told I had an extremely large amount of microscopic blood in my urine but no infection. I explained about the back pain and was told by the doctors where I was describing the pain was not near my kidneys at all, however she would put it down to a kidney stone and I was sent for a CT Scan (without dye).

I went for the scan and was told I had the all clear but symptoms once again kept reoccurring, except I no longer had any upper back pain. I have since had antibiotics in the hope it could of been an infection not picked up, however once again upon repeating my urine sample, still lots of blood and no infection. However my frequency has eased but I still have the urgency to go to the toilet, and an agonising pain in my right hip/lower back.

Has anyone on here who has been diagnosed with bladder cancer only ever had microscopic blood in there urine?

My doctors has told me not to show any concern, however I'm a little worries why there is still so much microscopic blood in my urine?

Thanks for reading.  Lucie

Update ****

I went for a Cytoscopy on Monday, where a growth/mass was detected in my bladder which has been photographed. I was told to go away and someone would be in touch, so I'm waiting to hear from a doctor as to what this might be.

  • Hi Lucie.

I wasn't seen by a student but by a qualified doctor, who immediately identified my cancer.  It looked like a fronded plant you'd see in an aquarium - quite pretty in fact.  I had TURBT surgery 6 weeks later and two clear cystoscopies so far; the latest just about 6-8 weeks ago.

I hope whatever it is in your bladder is just as easily treated.

Please keep us posted when you get some results.

  • Hi Telemando

I've been told I'm being discharged from the hopsital, no explanations as to what the mass is. I will trust that they are the professionals.

I hope you don't mind me updating you. Lucie

  • Hi Lucie.

I admit I'm completely astonished by this.  They should have told you what's going on, and at least identified this growth as benign, although it's quite possible that there's a letter to follow which might give you more information.

However, I think that in your shoes I would talk to my GP - quite possibly he/she can now access your cystoscopy results on the computer, or may have received a letter from the hospital.

  • Hi Telemando

Thanks for your reply. I am too, I phone the doctors today to be told they have a letter dated 4th Jan saying everything was normal, so I'm at my wits end, and feeling like I've imagine the whole thing, even when I asked why they would photograph something if it was supposed to be there, the only response I get is I'm not entirely sure. I have requested a copy of my Cytoscopy findings and what they took a photo of, and if need be I will pay to go private.

  • Maybe the cystoscopy report will shed more light on the situation, particularly if you have the photographs.

I think that in your shoes I might want to go private, too.

  • Hi Bunny06, I hope you don't mind me replying after over a year, however I have a cystoscopy next week.  Like you I have had the internal ultrasounds and colposcopy treatment and endo.  How was the cystoscopy?  I'm having sleepless nights worrying, I've already postponed 2 appointments and if I don't go next week they are not going to be very happy with me and I'll still worry.  I hope you are well.

  • Hello I've got appointment for cystascopy and ive got microscopic blood and high protein levels in my urine very worried

  • Hi Ial and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I can see you were trying to reach out to Pigginpigs, but as they haven't been on the fourm since 2020, there is a chance you may not hear back from them.

I really do hope that isn't the case and you receive some support from them or other members on this thread soon but if you'd like to chat with others who are posting on the forum more regularly then it may be best to start your own discussion.

I'm not sure when your cystoscopy is but I just wanted to wish you good luck and share some information we have about this procedure on our website. I hope this helps ease your mind but if you like to talk things through with one of our nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
