Concerns about bladder cancer.

Hi everyone,

I hope this is ok to post. I'm hoping to find some advice.

Around 8/9 weeks ago I began having an urgency to go to the toilet, I couldn't hold it at all, and I had to urinate very frequently. (I'm 28 years old).

I didn't have any pain going to the toilet but would often feel like I hadn't urinated it all out. Around 2 weeks after this I had pain in my upper back, it felt like it shook my whole ribcage.

I booked a doctors appointment, and did a urine sample and was told I had an extremely large amount of microscopic blood in my urine but no infection. I explained about the back pain and was told by the doctors where I was describing the pain was not near my kidneys at all, however she would put it down to a kidney stone and I was sent for a CT Scan (without dye).

I went for the scan and was told I had the all clear but symptoms once again kept reoccurring, except I no longer had any upper back pain. I have since had antibiotics in the hope it could of been an infection not picked up, however once again upon repeating my urine sample, still lots of blood and no infection. However my frequency has eased but I still have the urgency to go to the toilet, and an agonising pain in my right hip/lower back.

Has anyone on here who has been diagnosed with bladder cancer only ever had microscopic blood in there urine?

My doctors has told me not to show any concern, however I'm a little worries why there is still so much microscopic blood in my urine?

Thanks for reading.  Lucie

Update ****

I went for a Cytoscopy on Monday, where a growth/mass was detected in my bladder which has been photographed. I was told to go away and someone would be in touch, so I'm waiting to hear from a doctor as to what this might be.

  • Hello Lucie8

I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing health problems that you've had recently. It's understandable that you've feeling a bit worried about things.
I noticed that one of our nurses replied to a very similar post earlier today and said this in her response

"There are guidelines written by BAUS ( The British Association of Urological Surgeons) when blood is is discovered in urine. Have a look at them here".

You might find it useful to have a look through the link that the nurses shared but you're also most welcome to give them a call. I'm sure they will be able to offer you some advice and support.

If you'd like to chat to them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that things settle and improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks so much for your reply. I've come accross that site before and found it very useful.

    Thanks again, Lucie

  • Hi,

I have also been told I have blood in my urine with no apparent cause. It has been tested 4 times now. No infection.  I am being fast tracked for a flexible cystoscopy. I am scared stiff and just want to cry constantly.  I'm here if you need to talk.

  • Hi, I am just being referred for similar reasons. I initially thought I had a urine infection, had antibiotics and handed in a urine sample showed high levels blood but no infection. GP didn't actually tell me as assumed it was my period which wasn't the case. 8 weeks on still having blood, only once have I visibly seen it rest is microscopic.

I'm 24, doctors weren't very helpful as said I have no infection so no further action. I don't think they're concerned about blood on its own in younger people, but with other symptoms I've read should be investigated. I have urgency, massively increased frequency & discomfort and was upset that doctors were saying no further action so I called them again and now having an urgent referral after the doctor I spoke to today said the urine samples kept being put under period when I haven't been on a period during any of them.

I have my urology appt next Tuesday afternoon. Do you have any follow ups booked? I hope you get an answer it's very frustrating

  • Hi Lucie8.

I should start out by saying I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.  However, I was treated for a tiny bladder cancer last year (I'm 66) and I've had two clear cystoscopies since surgery.

At your age (28) the incidence of bladder cancer is very very very tiny.  In fact, looking at the Bladder Cancer incidence by age page on this site, it's given as 0 per 100,000.  This puts the odds somewhere around a million to one.

I know you're worried about the microscopic blood, but I recall hearing a radio 4 programme a year or two ago where an experienced urologist explained that microscopic blood in the urine of people under 50 is rarely any cause for concern.  The usual pattern is the blood is discovered in the urine, the patient is referred to a urologist, tests are done and usually they find nothing wrong.

So please don't let your mind dwell on the possibility of cancer.  It's very remote indeed.

  • Hi Pigginpigs.

Thanks for your message. Sorry to hear your having the same problems. Have you had your cystoscopy yet?

  • Hi Bunny06

Sorry to hear your experiencing the same problems. Have you had any results back?

I havent had any further tests yet just a letter from the hospital saying my referral is being reviewed, and they will decide whether they feel it needs to be investigated further. Which is very frustrating! I understand the risk of it being something cancerous is rare in young people but it still happens, so I'll be persisting with the issue.

  • Hi Telemando Thanks so much for your message I appreciate you taking the time to comment. It's great to hear that you have been given the all clear and hope this continues for you.

I think Dr Google has put the frighteners on me! As it's not just small amounts of microscopic blood it's a lot. However I will do my very best to remain positive.

  • Hi i went through this 2 years ago, if u go on mumsnet u will see lots of us did and none of us was found to have anything sinister.

We were all told sime of us just do have microscopic blood in our wee.

I had cystoscopy and ultrasound of kidneys , bloods, 24 hr urine collection all perfect.

    Try not to worry xx

  • Sorry, I didn't realise it was visible blood.  That's what sent me off to the urologist for tests.  While I was there, I was told that in 80% of cases of visible blood in urine, they do eliminate cancer as a possible cause, but never pin down the exact reason.  Unfortunately, I was one of the 20%, but mine was still caught very early.  80:20 is still good odds.
