Asbestos mistake

4 weeks ago I sought help to fix a problem in my garage. A family member that I trust advised that we should remove part of a wall that looked like plaster board as part of this fix. I was present while they happily cut into the wall with a small power tool.

Shortly afterwards it was discovered that the wall could have been asbestos insulation boards. In my ignorance I didn't know much about asbestos frustratingly. A test has confirmed that the boards are AIB. I have since made the area safe and had quotes to remove the material properly by qualified companies.

I know the internet is full of good information and in this instance lots of scary information but I think I've read all of it ten times over in relation to this topic. I've spoken to the gp and even had a few sessions with a cognitive therapist in a effort to quieten my brain. Nothing seems to be helping.

I now know how dangerous this incident was and the effects it might have on me. Oddly the family member has shrugged it off and has shown no concerns whatsoever. I pray these effects do not show up for a long time but my brain has decided that I've effectively given myself a death sentence. So much so that since reading all the expected symptoms shortly afterwards my chest has tightened and I constantly find myself checking my ability to breath freely.

Does anyone have advice on how to move past this state of mind? It's creating a real problem in my relationships, I'm not sleeping and I find myself distant from the young family I enjoyed only a month ago.

  • Hi Ana0102 and Abc01,

I have also experienced a similar scenario to yours and really got myself worried over my asbestos exposure. This lead me to reading nearly every single article concerning Asbestos exposure, talking to Asbestos experts on the phone, and booking a GP appointment to discuss my worries.

Firstly, please try not to worry about this exposure. Asbestos can seem extremely frightening when we first find out about it, and the horror stories on the internet certainly don't help. The general consensus is that such small and brief exposure presents a negligible health risk. The reason for this is because we are exposed to very small amounts of Asbestos fibers in the air anyways due to environmental and constructional changes. Asbestos-related diseases occur in those who have worked in high-risk jobs, for over several years. Most people now undertake DIY work and so it is extremely common to come into contact with small amounts of Asbestos during your work yet there are no reported cases of these people becoming ill from this small exposure.

If you would like, I could send you a link to a study that monitored those experiencing heavy asbestos exposure for just under 3 months whilst mining in Australia, yet there were no cases of any asbestos-related illnesses. Also on this forum, there was a writer who explained he spent 3 days cutting AIB and being covered in the dust for 8 hours a day, and his GP explained that the risk was very low.

I really hope this helps, and please don't hesitate to message me back for any further info. Thanks, R :)

  • I have added you as a friend on here so it should let you send me it.

Thank you very much. I have been worrying for 5 months now and I just feel so scared about it all. He cut AIB roughly 60cm by 60 cm. He came back in and was with our little one. We carried on our day, went in the car and I washed clothes etc.

we have cleaned as much as we could in the garage with PPE and damp rags. We have tried to clean cars.

we had it all the AIB removed last week which is something.

I just keep thinking our house and cars are contaminated from googling so much. I feel sick about the risks

    to our little one.

The article would be great help.

    Thank you

  • How has your husband dealt with his exposure?

I have had counselling sessions which have helped a little. I'm still very scared of getting ill from my exposure. I don't seem to be able to convince myself I will get away with my mistake.

I have talked to many asbestos support groups, there is no way of knowing if and when it will effect the person that's had exposure. I've sought the help of the gp and for the moment put a brave face on to keep my family happy.

  • I've added you as a friend in here. Any evidence that helps would be good. So far everything I've read has been very negative.

  • The doctor gave him an X Ray, but people have said it wouldn't show up now anyway. He is very much it has happened there is nothing he could do. He didn't know what it was and lesson learnt. The doctor said it was low risk for him and very low risk for our daughter and myself as we weren't in the garage.

we were more concerned about him coming in with fibres on with our daughter.

we also had a management survey done on the house to avoid any more disturbances in the future.

    What therapy helped you ?

  • Hello,

reading your posts l wonder how you think asbestos was ever managed to be made in the first place, given that your expectation is serious damage from limited initial exposure. The workforce would have had to have been replaced very frequently due to health issues, which of course it was not,so limited exposure will not cause long term problems. If your mind is unable to square these facts then you really do have an all consuming problem and have my sympathies, life is difficult enough without continuous overbearing anxiety. l hope you can find your answer in overcoming this,

  • It's great news that the doctor said the exposure is low risk.

What was their reasoning? I read one thing and people/ doctors say another.

Has he had any physical problems since that day? I quickly developed a high resting heart rate and stomach problems which the doctor is helping with. I'm hoping they aren't related to the asbestos but I fear they may be.
