Confusing tests

My GP has requestsed tests for enlarged lymph nodes in my neck. He mentioned leukaemia which has made me worried.
I've had some blood tests and am waiting for an ultrasound.

The bloods have come back and the receptionist said they were fine the full blood count coming as 'acceptable'. I didn't make a note of all the tests, but one was for thyroid and another hi ferritin.
I was really relieved till my husband said that the term 'acceptable' means on the edge of a range considered normal, and I'm getting anxious again.

Does anyone know if I can rule out blood cancers based on the above information?

Thanks

  • Hi Bede.

Full blood count checks loads of things, so some could be near top of the range some near the bottom but they were all within the boundaries of being OK so nothing is wrong,.

I hope if you have more tests your husband will have more sense than to get you worried more than you already are.

Good luck with and best wishes for the future keep positive thoughts and actions.

  • I have a friend who's a retired GP.  I was discussing blood tests with him one day and he mentioned that in his experience whenever a GP requests a panel of blood tests, there is usually one which is outside the normal range, but which has no significance. It's just the natural variability of humans. It looks like none of your readings were out of range so stop worrying.

BTW, give your husband a great big kick on the behind for worrying you unnecessarily.

  • Thank you so much! That's a relief.
