Complex ovarian cyst

I've had an ultrasound which has picked up hundreds of fibroids and a complex cyst on my right ovary. My CA125 is 139.
Fast forward two weeks and I've seen a junior consultant, who wasn't concerned at all and basically told me there's nothing wrong with me, she would only be worried if I were 20 years older!! I'm 43..... she said they would monitor me every 3 months. Obviously I went out of the hospital in a daze feeling like I've wasted their time!!

I was assigned a support worker from the gyny team at my local hospital once my doctor did a fast track referral and thank god she rang me!!

The senior consultant requested an MRI which I have now had. My next appointment is next week. The waiting is affecting my every day routine and I can think of nothing but having cancer and leaving my 13 year old twins. I know it's not long to wait but I'm so scared.

  • Hi, I found out in January that i had a cyst on my right ovary which was roughly 8.8cm. I am only 24 so was very worried and concerned that having this cyst could affect my future. Fast forward a few months I was at the gynaecologist signing the consent form to remove the cyst, lockdown happened and I am still waiting for a removal. I have had to ring 111 a number of times , called the doctors etc and i am currently on co-codomal as the pain is unbearable but there is nothing i can do as they aren't doing any surgeries at the moment. I had another ultrasound to re-assure me the cyst was okay however it turns out is has grown now to 13cm. I have rung the hospital and they can't push it forward so it's just a waiting game.. i still have no date for surgery :( is anybody else in the same position as me??

    Thank you

  • Hi I was wondering if you could let me know where your at now? I feel like I’m heading towards a similar situation to you, 2 weeks ago I finally got an ultrasound after 8 months of drs appointments and phone consultations and they’ve found a 13x9cm cyst. I’ve been told they’ve urgently referred me but over 2 weeks later I’ve heard nothing , I’m 19 and very petite frame so this cyst is buldging through my stomach and making me need to urinate all the time and causeing bowel problems. I’m wanting it removed asap but I’m not feeling confident it will be anytime soon. Just wondering if you’ve got anywhere yet?

  • Hi, I have the exact same problems as you - making my belly swell (especially in the morning when my bladder is full), bowel problems (not as frequent), always needing a wee (actually had a few water infections and a kidney infection because of this). I finally got a date through for removal at the end of October but because of a rise in Covid infections this was cancelled less than 24 hours before (gutted is an understatement!!). I have today however received a phone call with another date for my operation so fingers crossed this one all goes through! I would say keep ringing your doctors (i was referred as a 2 week fast track in January to the hospital) so i've rung them a number of times the past few months for updates too but just be persistent with them!! It will eventually get done although it is a massive worry!

  • Thanks for replying, its a nightmare isn’t it! I’ve spoken to the secretary of gynaecology and they’ve basically told me that their not doing any routine surgery and have knocked it down to non urgent. I think the only way I will get it removed is if it ruptures.  Shocking though isn’t it, I don’t think any treatment should be cancelled because of Covid.

  • Hi guys . I think I am also in the same boat.I have an 8cm complex cyst with septations solid components and vascular flow. Had scan on 13th March then covid hit all services. I received a call with results in July time with consultant and it was agreed that I would have it removed. I had preop 14 August and have heard nothing since as they are trying to cope with the backlog of patients . I am very worried and I am in a lot of pain most days. I have problems with bloating and pain in abdomen and legs as well as bowel problems. I have worked from home all lockdown and am at the point i can’t even sit down for long periods. I wake up in pain I’m exhausted most days. I take pain relief with co codomol but it’s not the best. My ca125 was normal so don’t think they’re as worried as me but I just don’t feel right. Everyone reassures me it’s nothing to worry about but living through it is very hard.. I wish you both well and hope you hear back soon x
  • Hi, sorry to hear you also have a cyst.. they are a lot more common then i originally thought which made me feel at ease! Fortunately, i have now had my cyst removed!! Private hospitals in my area are helping out the NHS so i had the luxury of a private hospital which was lovely and the nurses and doctors were all so caring. I have to admit, i wasn't expecting the experience to be what it was it was very overwhelming and more intense than i thought but i'm so glad it happened. It's now been 9 days since they removed the cyst (it ended up being over 15cm on my left ovary, even though every ultrasound thought it was on the right!). They couldn't do keyhole through my belly button as they said it was have just burst the cyst so i have 4 cuts, 1 above my belly button, 2 half way down either side and one 8cm line on my pant line. They left my ovary in however they aren't sure how functionable it will be! I'm slowly on the mend though and just so grateful i was able to get it removed!! Hope you all receive updates soon and good luck x

  • Thanks for getting in touch and great to hear you had your surgery and you was well cared for. Hope you take it easy sounds like you have been through a lot x

  • Hi yes im in same situation been going on for months due to covid appointment cancelled treatment stopped  i had scans i have a mass in right overie and cyst which bleed  in to ovary that when down had scan again pain sick passing out they found the cysts bleed again all getting told is long waiting time due to staff covid  mean time on codeine and copping day by day i still work i am worried  they dont explain anything when u had hysterectomy and only got ovarys im 44

  • Hi there Sarah I do find that they do not tell you too much and they do their best to not alarm you unless they have good reason to think it's sinister. In some ways the waiting  around is making it worse. I am still no further along with getting a date for surgery. I completed a survey recently about my feelings about going into surgery due to covid (I said I was fine to proceed as just want it done) so maybe things are progressing. I sincerely hope you are ok as I know myself how tough it's been to keep a brave face at times. It's been a tough year for everyone but I do think that the ladies who are waiting for treatment are under further strain and fighting battles no one quite understands. Pleas try and enjoy Xmas and hopefully we get positive news next year xx

  • Hi all, I hope you're doing well!

I haven't been diagnosed with anything but I've recently been to my GP about symptoms I was having, and I assumed they'd be put down to IBS since I've struggled with it all my life (I’m 22) but from what I described she seemed to think it was more ovarian. However another doctor called me about my blood tests and she thinks it's more Bowel related. I’m frustrated because after reading up, my symptoms do seem more synonymous with ovarian than bowel conditions and the initial doctor said she'd recommend me for a CT scan but now the other one doesn't think I should have one. I just wondered what your symptoms were? I have really bad health anxiety too, so my brain has been constantly thinking I must have ovarian cancer. I know it's rare at my age and I don't have any other risk factors (ie no family members have had it, I don't smoke, only drink sometimes, etc.) but my mind is racing that it still could be cancer.
    my main symptoms have been:

a sensation of there being something in my lower left abdomen, the doctor couldn't feel any lumps but especially when I lie on my front or left side, it just feels like there's something there.

sciatic like pain in my back and down my left leg from time to time

bloating but i don't know whether this is to do with food and inactivity too

often feel nauseous and again I don't think anxiety is helping but I also don't think it's all to do with anxiety either.

constantly feeling like I need to pass stool even when I've been to the toilet

my blood tests have shown my iron levels to be low which I expected as they were years ago too, plus I’m vegetarian. However the doctor mentioned a potential colonoscopy to check there's no internal bleeding. I know I’m not the doctor but I just feel like an ovarian problem fits my symptoms much more than any bowel condition and now I'm anxious because this doctor isn't considering that even though the original one was. Can you tell me if these were similar symptoms that any of you experienced?

    thank you x
