borderline cell changes and HPV positive: freaking out

Dear all,

I am 26 and a half and I have done my PAP test again after several years (I don't even remember how many years ago I did the last one). My results came back and it was a shock: HPV positive,  borderline cell changes and a referall for a colposcopy. I am very very anxious because I have read about girls that had borderline changes identified with the smear teast but then they found them to have cancer at the colposcopy appointment. I find it very difficult to think about anything else, it's a nightmare.   I am here looking for reassurance and I hope you can help me going through the waiting...

Thank you a lot!!!!

  • Hi I got a letter Saturday and my appointment came through today. Freaking out as never had an abnormal result and had hysterectomy years ago. Trying to be positive but as a pessimist it's a challenge x

  • Hi there. Glad to hear all went well at your recent colposcopy. I have had three smears all HPV postive. Most recent said cells were normal, but the one before had boarderline cell changes. At my colposcopy they said all looked fine, so like you have been discharged and told to have a smear in 3 years. They didn't even take a biopsy - did they with you? So glad all seems to look okay but I'm just wondering whether I should still be having annual smears as I still have the HPV? Thanks so much <3

ps. Love to all and thanks for this wonderful forum, reading through these stories has made me feel much less alone and has put my mind at ease. two years ago when was told HPV positive, and then the cell changes, mind was in a real spin. I think it's great all the awareness of the virus etc. but the negative is it's seen a bit like THE CANCER VIRUS now, whereas actually it's very common, often goes away on its own, and just needs careful monitoring to be safe and make sure it doesn't progress (hence me wondering about annual smears...)

  • Hi sorry I had to reply as my results came today from my smear saying hpv positive and borderline changes.. where you wrote about leaving your daughter without a mummy hit home with me too because I have a special needs little girl.. just me and her and I have cried all day.  I also suffer with high anxiety and intrusive thoughts so this has completely taken over and I dred to think how long I will have to wait for a coloscopy

  • Am just reading your post, what happened in the end? This is my second smear and have received a letter to say I am HPV positive and have borderline changes. When I spoke to the doctor they seemed ok about it and not very concerned. However I have been experiencing stomach pain, shooting pains. Not sure if this is to do with this but I am really freaking out. I can't seem to think about anything else. I have 2 young children and am so petrified. Would help to see if anyone else has experienced anything like this.

  • How did everyone get on .

I received my result today hpv and borderline changes I had a lil cry as I suffer with severe anxiety single mum of 3 kids thought of dying breaks me .. but I have got to say the only thing keeping me abit calm atm is 6 years ago I had high grade chances cin 4 I think? Had biopsies at the time of the app thn went back to 3 yearly and went on to  have a normal smear so this is why I'm assuming borderline is less bad . But it's the 2nd time with bad smear and 2nd time with hpv.  I called this morning as soon as I got my letter to make hospital app.. she made it for a months time I cried then she says Iv gt a app next week.. well yes! Thankyou why offer the one a month away !?

  • Hi

Just came across this forum after googling my results HPV positive & borderline changes. My results in 2020 were HPV positive so I had to come back in 12 months to see if it was gone. But nope I'm still HPV Positive with borderline changes it says I should receive a letter in 2-4 weeks. I'm so so terrified I'm 28 and a mum of 3 this has always been a massive fear of mine since I had my first child at 17 and now I'm even more scared. But reading this forum has relaxed me just a little so thank you. Fingers crossed all your results came back OK xx

  • How did you both get on? I still haven't had my coloscopy. My appointment is on the 17th of feb so hopefully will be ok fingers crossed. X

  • I've received a letter today but doesn't say anything other than my cervical screening has shown abnormal result which needs further investigation. This is my second year of abnormal results and second year of having my smear taken both abnormal. Had a biopsy first year (last year) and came back CIN1, dreading another biopsy as it hurt so much last time and I have so many problems down there as it is :( could someone help me put my mind at ease please x

  • I'm going through this high risk hpv and abnormal cells I've just had really heavy bleeding n lower back pain even though on pill I'm terrified got coloscopy 10th feb scared to death

  • Hi, I've had exactly the same result and symptoms last year I was diagnosed in May 2021, luckily, I had private medical insurance cover because of work so I saw a private gynaecologist (she is a consultant in the NHS too). The result was high risk HPV positive and low grade dyskarosis, and also mature and immature changed to squamous cells in the cervix, it all showed up on a cervical biopsy. I'm worried because I'm only 22. This year in May I'm supposed to have another colposcopy and maybe another cervical biopsy if the cervix still looks abnormal, I got a feeling nothing has changed and it has gone worse because of the pain I get down below. I suffer from a condition down below called lichen sclerosus and also polycystic ovary syndrome. So I am worried in the same boat as you, hope everyone is going to be okay and get a good result
