borderline cell changes and HPV positive: freaking out

Dear all,

I am 26 and a half and I have done my PAP test again after several years (I don't even remember how many years ago I did the last one). My results came back and it was a shock: HPV positive,  borderline cell changes and a referall for a colposcopy. I am very very anxious because I have read about girls that had borderline changes identified with the smear teast but then they found them to have cancer at the colposcopy appointment. I find it very difficult to think about anything else, it's a nightmare.   I am here looking for reassurance and I hope you can help me going through the waiting...

Thank you a lot!!!!

  • Hi lovely!

So I've just this hour got back from my colposcopy.. I found your post researching what happens after

My smear test was High risk HPV and dyskaryosis (low cell change)

At the colposcopy clinic you get to see your cervix on the screen which was quite fascinating. I have a raw area and a harder patch.. they done a biopsy and I have to wait for the results but on talking to the doctor.she said that it doesn't just turn into cancer .. th is is just the very beginning stages. The biopsy well tell more if it's just surface cell changes or further in but even then they can do two procedures... a local injection and laser off the bad cells or if it's further in a loop procedure done under General and they take off a little.more of the cervix.

I hope that kinda helps x

  • I'm the exact same age as you and had the exact same smear results too. First in 2017 and again this January and both times the colposcopies revealed nothing when vinegar solution was applied so I just have to have yearly smears for a while. Just wanted to reassure you that those results dont necessarily mean anything is really wrong.

    Hope your appointment goes well!

  • Hi!

Thank you very much for your reply! It helps a LOT.

Really? I am so worried that they might find cancer but then I try to remain rational... unfortunately there is no way to know before the appointment and it will be only in late April. I hope at least, given all this coronavirus situation....

  • Thank you Everdream!

It does not seem so bad from what you say...When will you have your results back?

    Hope everything goes well!

    XXX

  • Hi

i have had the same results through the post a few days ago from my smear in early December and I too can't think of anything else. I'm worried sick I keep googling things and keep crying at the prospect of having cancer and not being able to watch my little girl grow up and leaving her without her mummy! I hope you are ok and got good results! With COVID it's saying my appointment for xoposcopy should arrive within 8 weeks and I'm freaking out at having to worry about this for so long!  I had to reply because it's like everyone keeps saying you will be fine done worry it's common and I feel like the high risk Hpv is making it so much more frightening for me

    xx

  • You're me! It's spooky. Except with a young son. Same thing, early Dec had a smear, just got letter today to say HPV positive and "changes" I called my dr who told me they were "borderline"... which is better I guess? But I don't know and don't want to Google TOO much. It also said 8 weeks for colposcopy on my letter, which seems forever - BUT my doctor said it hadn't been put through as an emergency in that case - so I guess that's a good thing for us? I hope anyway. Xx

  • That's very much spooky! Thank you for replying to me because I felt very alone in this. I haven't called my gp but I'm going to tomorrow morning now to see if I can get any further information. Yeah I guess that if they don't see it as emergency it can only be a good thing for us  At least we are not alone in this. Can't believe how much we take health for granted until something like this, what a reality check it's given me !! xx

  • I had to reply because I felt the same, your wee post made me feel a bit less alone! My GP definitely made me feel a bit better, especially because he said it was "borederline" (I assume thats on the lower end of the scale and not like "borderline bad!" - but now I'm questioning myself!) my letter didn't say it was borderline, did yours? He sounded very much like "ah you're fine" which helped, but I'm hoping he's right!
call them tomorrow, you might find out a bit more, and they might be able to offer you a bit more advice too!

definitely, it's pretty scary :( Xx

  • Hi just seen both of your posts. Just wanted to reassure you an try put your mind at rest. I also had a HPV positive  result from my first smear in 2019 followed by annual smears for 2 years beginning of Jan I had a HPV positive and borderline cell changes result. Had my colposcopy this morning and was told everything looks fine so was discharged for smears every 3 years now. Try not to worry or google I done exactly the same and you just think of the worst. Hope you both get your appointments through soon and get the same result. Good luck sending you love x

  • Hi Alex! Thank you so much for that, that definitely does help, I didn't realise they would know there and then (as they were doing the colposcopy) that everything was fine. Presumably if not they'd send a sample away or something? So glad all is fine with you! Fingers crossed it's exactly the same with us ️
