Bladder & bowel cancer

Im posting in the hope of receiving some advice regarding my husbands 2 urgent referrals.

He's 53 years old and has noticed blood in his urine, but also mixed in his stools (which have become looser over time despite diet remaining pretty much the same).  He has told me the blood is not visible (in both) at every toilet break and the urine sample I took to the GP for him certainly didn't look bloody although a test confirmed blood, but GP said no infection was detected and so he received an instant referral to urology for xray, ultrasound and cystoscopy (the only symptoms hubby has mentioned aside from blood are frequent urinating (including at night, feeling like bladder has not emptied and a bit tired - although his job is more physically demanding so this could be unrelated)

His GP has been very vague about recent blood result stating all are 'normal' although hubby never asked exactly what was tested or print out of results and has no online access to his test results and GP never said.  So in under a week he's gone from routine GP visit to a hospital appointment this Thursday (the date for urgent referral regarding blood in stool has not yet come through)

He is anxious about the procedures (the hospital have sent only a basic letter, so no further info about the tests).  I suffer from severe and crippling anxiety so have not been coping at all either, especially with no one to snswer questions  Is it normal to make a referral so quickly and is it because the GP really does suspect cancer?  I thought there were certain blood tests to ascertain cancer markers.  Also, is it likely the blood in stool and urine are related or more likely we are dealing with two separate issues?

Thank you for any info and advice you can offer in advance.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Sunshine although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

Your husband's GP would be the best person to discuss this with so if you have your husband's permission or when your husband next goes to see them, do be sure to go with him so you can get these questions answered.

In the meantime, I want to wish your husband all the best for tomorrow and give you our cancer nurses telephone number in case you want to talk things through with them. You can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sunshine201. Welcome to the forum.

I've been referred for both suspected bladder and bowel cancer.

The usual test for bowel cancer involves a colonoscopy, and for me the worst part was the heavy duty laxatives you need to take the day before.  The colonoscopy revealed that I have diverticular disease but no cancer.

At Easter 2019 I was referred to urology after passing blood in my urine.  The tests I had were a CT with contrast, and a flexible cystoscopy.  The CT revealed a minor problem with a kidney which wasn't responsible for the bleeding.  The cystoscopy found a very small cancer, size about 3mm.  The kidney problem is being monitored but probably will never need treatment.  The cancer was removed early in June by a TURBT operation.  I'm due to have my first follow up cystoscopy next week.

Although it's worrying to get an urgent referral for suspected cancer, in practice about 9 out of every 10 referrals turn out not to be cancer.  The urologist told me that in 8 out of 10 cases for blood in the urine, they can't find any cause at all.  So, the odds are good.

I know it's difficult not to worry, but worrying doesn't help.  Try not to Google symptoms (because that really doesn't help) and resolve to cross every bridge when you get to it.

  • Sunshine - do you mind me asking what happened with your husband? My dad has the same symptoms - blood in urine and stools. He has a TURBT tomorrow and, like your husband, is crippled with anxiety about it
