Petechiae- very worried.

I am very worried due to me always linking petechiae with leukaemia

Hello

In January, a small patch of petechiae appeared on my leg nothing more nothing less. I went to the doctors and did a blood test and they said I was fine and it was nothing to worry about.

It went away however a month ago it appeared again but bigger, I also gave many dots on my feet and legs.

I am very worried any advice?

  • My wife has the same issue.  For those who don't know, petechiae are dots of blood which appear under the skin; they often appear with purpura, which are larger areas or patches of blood under the skin, rather like a bruise. They appear suddenly, then fade over time. Usually, the dot or patch is well beneath the surface of the skin, but just occasionally it  might bleed. The dots and patches can appear anywhere.

My wife has had a couple of blood tests but everything seems ok. It just appears to be something that has started as she's got older. It was startling at first, but our GP has reassured us that there's nothing wrong.

As a general rule, we advise people not to search for their symptoms on Google.  The problem is that if you follow any chain of symptoms far enough, you will always reach cancer or some other dire condition.

I think since your patches have reappeared you should revisit the doctor, who may want to repeat the blood work.

  • Hello it’s been a while.

The spots have faded away yet some single ones randomly appear and sometimes appear when I itch.

i have been to the doctors my blood is fine.

i have been referred to a dermatologist which I am going to next week.

however can I rule out Leukemia? I am so terrified! I have no other symptoms.

  • Hi Karen.

Under no circumstances should you pay any attention to medical "advice" from Dr. Google.  Dr Google is a quack and no one here pays any attention :-)

About once a week (maybe more) we get someone who's read a Google page and frightened themselves silly.  We've all done it at some time, and we all have to learn the lesson that you simply can't make medical diagnoses from internet pages.  That's why doctors train for so many years.

So, put anything you've read on Google out of your mind.

  • Hi!

That's true, but what's bothering me is how the doctor said it would be bad if I had more than 15, and when I mentioned I dont know how many I have she said I was fine. Maybe they have to be 15 clustered together? Mine are spread out.

  • I suggest you get back to your doctor, say you've counted the spots, and there are more than 15.

My wife has many more than 15, but she's had the blood tests and she's fine.

  • Hi!

I've had blood test done 2 months ago (I had the spots then ) and they came back fine.

Also I've had them all my life. I have a dermatology appointment for a mole in a few months. Should i bring it up then?

  • Personally, I would see if I could get a phone call with the GP first.  I think that will get you quicker reassurance.  If the GP thinks it's necessary to have more blood tests then you'll get them done long before you see the dermatologist.

You could definitely mention it to the dermatologist, but I'm not sure that a skin specialist would be able to help with what might be a blood clotting problem.

  • Hi,

I rang the receptionist and told her I have a question for the gp. She said the gp will call me asap.

    Karen

  • I think you've done the wisest thing.  Let us know how you get on.

  • The doctor said they arent dramatic enough, big enough and them dont appear in a rash to be dangerous! All good here thank god

  • That's good news.  Thanks for keeping us informed.

  • Hi

So i also am very worried about my spots under the skin, they appeared only 3 days ago first starting on my lower hip but have now spread down to my thigh, i'm only 16 so it's worrying me a lot.

Ive been having troubles with my skin recently i had pityriasis rosea on my upper body but that's seem to dissapear slightly i'm just wondering if that may be linked to the spots on my leg.

I don't know what i can do, i might ring my GP again but I don't know if it is likely to go on it's own or i need to get some tests?

I also read up about petechiae but i have no other symptoms so i'm wondering if it's just nothung but can't be too sure.

    any advice?
