Petechiae- very worried.

I am very worried due to me always linking petechiae with leukaemia

Hello

In January, a small patch of petechiae appeared on my leg nothing more nothing less. I went to the doctors and did a blood test and they said I was fine and it was nothing to worry about.

It went away however a month ago it appeared again but bigger, I also gave many dots on my feet and legs.

I am very worried any advice?

  • My wife has the same issue.  For those who don't know, petechiae are dots of blood which appear under the skin; they often appear with purpura, which are larger areas or patches of blood under the skin, rather like a bruise. They appear suddenly, then fade over time. Usually, the dot or patch is well beneath the surface of the skin, but just occasionally it  might bleed. The dots and patches can appear anywhere.

My wife has had a couple of blood tests but everything seems ok. It just appears to be something that has started as she's got older. It was startling at first, but our GP has reassured us that there's nothing wrong.

As a general rule, we advise people not to search for their symptoms on Google.  The problem is that if you follow any chain of symptoms far enough, you will always reach cancer or some other dire condition.

I think since your patches have reappeared you should revisit the doctor, who may want to repeat the blood work.

  • Hello it’s been a while.

The spots have faded away yet some single ones randomly appear and sometimes appear when I itch.

i have been to the doctors my blood is fine.

i have been referred to a dermatologist which I am going to next week.

however can I rule out Leukemia? I am so terrified! I have no other symptoms.

  • Hi

i just wanted to ask you what the outcome was for you? I also get these a lot and have done for a few months. I have also had blood test which was normal and they haven’t said anything else. I’m getting more worried as it’s happening every couple of days and also happens when I itch aswell.

  • Hi!

Saying that ur bloods are fine is a very good sign!

So I had went to the doctors and they weren’t concerned about it and just ruled it off as maybe a reaction to an animal or just an overall reaction in my body .  They did say that my white blood cell level was just a tiny bit low but from there it has increased so I guess I’m fine now as I’ve had more blood test done and they said that there is no concern .

If you’re really concerned about it go to the doctors again but don’t worry as it might just be a reaction your body is having

  • Yeah that’s fair enough.. I am just worried because I haven’t got any pets or been around any particularly. I have been getting the dots aswell as bad bruising for a few months and had 2 blood tests that came back fine.. I did have blood transfusions before all this started happening as I had a stillbirth because of abruption (blood clot) so I guess I’m just scared it’s related to that and that something bad will happen when we decide to try and have another baby

  • I get this tiny red dots and really wish I didn't because they constantly worry me, I've been to the doctors twice and he didn't really know what they were or what caused them, he did my bloods which came back normal so said not to worry but I get sooo many of them! They just started on one arm and within 3 years I get them on both arms, back, tummy, legs, they don't seem to go either maybe fade a little but that's it, does anyone else think this isn't normal?

  • Mine turned out to be low folic acid after 6 blood tests starting from mid April this year... they said it was profoundly low and asked if there had been any changes to my diet (which there hadn't) and said to take folic acid tablets for a month and then get checked with another blood test. They said that and another couple vitamins can make you more prone to bruising if you get low...

  • That's exqctly what mine was like and kept getting it more and more and then got big black bruises with dots in for no reason haha

  • Did you get any answers back regarding this? This is happening to me had my bloods done 6 month ago that come back fine but since then got more and more. Got another blood test 20th of Jan anxiety is going wild

  • Hi

no I got all my bloods done at hospital aswell for like bruising and bleeding and some protein type ones but all came back fine. They said they thought it was my anti depressants I stopped taking them and I haven't had as many but I now get a few big black bruises at a time with the purple dots in them :/ I used to get them every couple days or at least once a week but I have only had them once since I stopped taking my tablets and that was 3 weeks after. I was taking citalopram. They said they didn't think it would cause it that long after and told me to take vitamin c... I don't know why ‍♀️

  • Where I've had bad bruising on my thighs usually still feels bruised when I touch it but my last bruise had already gone a week ago. It's so weird but I hope it's just a reaction to the antidepressant I was on!

  • I have this on my inner arms mainly so scared when I google Leukemia comes up x

  • Hi Bulldog.

DON'T Google your symptoms!  You could Google a head cold and it will tell you you've got cancer!

If you haven't already seen your GP then you should do so, but remember that there are many causes for petechiae, and cancer isn't the most likely.

  • Thanks I've got bloods booked in next week, last year when I had bloods I had low folate deficiency I wondering if I have that again has I'm always tired too.

  • Had bloods done said my full blood count slightly out of range but no further action? X

  • [@Bulldog2020]‍ did you get anywhere with this? I also have slightly higher than normal red blood cells and getting like little round splatters of blood spots on my legs. Dr did blood tests and said all though they are out of range mine usually are and they aren't worried but I am freaking out as I keep getting these tiny red blood spots!

  • I'm the same, had low folate last year and now seem to be getting these tiny pin *** spots all over but a patch on my chest. My husband thinks I'm a hypochondriac for even noticing them. I've booked a doctors appointment but I made the mistake of googling it and now and freaking out as I've got an enlarged lymph node in my neck (I've had it 7 years with no enlargement)

  • Hi.

I've been getting this rash type symptom. It started about 3 months ago, I noticed it on my stomach when I was getting changed one day. Didn't really think much of it and thought I'd had a reaction to something. Then about a month later it came back. In exactly the same place. Then I noticed it on my feet (very odd!!) and then on the backs of my legs. I went to the doctors who sent me for some bloods. Everything has come back normal apart from my liver test. They haven't said what's wrong but my liver test and coagulation has come back either slightly low or high. They haven't told me. I need to come back in 2 months for a retest. This made me feel better but I have now noticed the rash looks much angrier and seems to have clustered together. Looks a mess to be honest. Getting quite concerned with it after the things you read online. I don't feel unwell in myself but I just can't seem to get to the bottom of it. I don't take any medication, don't have an immune disorder or anything like that. Also haven't hurt myself so no idea what's happening. Anyone else got a similar story? It's freaking me out to be honest

  • Welcome to the forum Hfletcher although I'm sorry to hear about this rash.

I know this must be worrying but you did the right thing by seeking medical advice. Hopefully you'll get a step closer to some answers in 2 months time, but do be sure to let your GP know if your rash gets worse whilst you're waiting.

I hope some of the members on this discussion get back to you soon, but if you don't receive a reply, you're welcome to reach out to others on more recent discussions about this or start your own.

We're thinking of you Hfletcher and have our fingers crossed this is no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,
