Concerned I have cancer, how worried should I be ?

Hi im a 22 year old man and recently found raised lynph nodes in my right armpit, groin and one in my neck. I was sent to a hematologist who performed a physical examination and said he was not very concerned  and he also performed various blood tests which all came back negative. I believe all my swollen lynph nodes measure less that 1cm short axis but their are lots of them and they have been their for a long time. Should I be less worried because the specialist is not as worried and my blood tests came back negative ? I just keep thinking im going to die and the only alternative to a slow death is sucide.he has sent me for a ct scan because of my weight loss.

  • Hi Harveym66

Sorry to hear you've had to deal with these worries. I can relate to some extent.

I've had swollen nodes in my neck and armpits for years. Been trying to get doctors to take me seriously for a long time but due to only being 20 right now, they say I'm too young. Only on Sunday did I have an ultrasound on my neck. The sonographer doing the test said everything looks fine which gives me hope.

I know how awful it feels to not know what's going on with your own body and the urge to Google symptoms is so hard to avoid. I have had the worry of not knowing if I am seriously ill and not been diagnosed too but now you have had the tests you mentioned, I would definitely let my mind mind relax if I were you.

If the nodes change in any way or you notice more, go back to your GP. If you want further testing, go back to your GP. If you have any concerns at all about, go back to your GP. I'm a firm believer that no one knows your body like you do and so if something feels abnormal, make sure its investigated and taken seriously.

Having said all that, the CT scan should have picked up anything malicious and because it didn't, I'd be inclined to believe you have nothing to worry about! :)

If you want to talk further, don't hesitate to drop me a message.

    Take care x

  • Oh Harvey, you have got yourself in a state.  Why not believe the Doctors findings, they are specialist in this area and have told you all your results are negative.  Trust me that is the best result you could get.  You're young and are obviously worried about your health, is something else worrying you and you are focusing on these swellings.  Our bodies change as we grow, lumps and bumps are normal many times.  Don't talk suicide, if you feel so down the call the Samaritans and talk it through with them.  My husband has incurable cancer, which is why I am on this forum, he has fought it and never once have we considered ending our lives, life is too good, you just need to find everyday things to live for, family  friends, the sun, nature, there is so much to live for don't consider for one moment missing it all.  Post again if you want to chat about anything, I'm sure others will chat to you soon.  So sending warm wishes your way and please don't do anything stupid.  Carol

  • Sorry to hear your husband has incurable cancer, it must be hard. I wrote it wrong sorry, all my blood tests have come back negative but I'm having my ct scan tommorw which could come back with something. My doctor has said he's still not concerned through. I really don't know how to feel because it could still come back and be something even though he's not worried.

  • Harvey, the worst part is the waiting, everyone goes through it but we all come through it, despite what the result may be.  So stop thinking the worst, positive thinking helps.  A problem shared helps a lot. Keep us updated and get rid of those negative thoughts.  Take care, Carol

  • Hi lymph nodes can swell for no reason at all or their can be a bit of infection a lot of the time it goes off on its own. You can always go back to GP just to double check. Good luck.

  • Hi Harvey,

Thankfully the armpit, groin and neck are the most common places to get swollen lymph nodes but, annoyingly, you can have lots of them and no cause ever be found.  Which is frustrating, and can really worry some people.

I had 8 such swollen nodes at one point (my cousin had 11 at her highest count), and 2 of mine still haven't gone down despite decades having now passed.  I was thoroughly tested, as was my cousin, and no cause was ever identified.  This can be because the cause (a bug or virus) is no longer detectable by the time you see the doctor about the swollen nodes.  We are always told that lymph nodes go down in a matter of weeks, but from my experience, and that of others, this can be very far off the mark.

This doesn't sound like anything for you to worry about but I see you are getting a scan anyway so hopefully that will put your mind at rest.  The scan is sensible given your weight loss but I do wonder if your weight loss has been due to stressing over these lumps for some time?

I am very hopeful that the scan will show that you are healthy and that the swollen lymph nodes are just one of these annoying things you might have to put up with for a bit yet.

Always beware of any changes though and report them to your GP, but other than that I hope you can rest up, relax and put these nodes behind you.

    Best wishes,

    LJx

  • Thank you for your reply, its good to hear that they can swell in high numbers for no reason. Its strange because they have shown no sign of being malignancy yet but their are lots of them. The good thing about the weight loss is that I have not carried on losing and I have even been able to put a pound or two on, even through its been really difficult too.

Im just stupid because my mind always goes stright to the worst in these situations. I had the ct scan but the results won't come back until the 30th which is annoying.

    Regards Harvey

  • Harvey,

Sorry you're worried. Its only natural. Take comfort that all your blood tests ore all OK. I had severe head pain on one side for months. The ct scan of temporal bone and MRI scan of head came back OK.

    Very best wishes.

    R.

  • You're definitely not stupid Harvey, health anxiety is an increasing problem in today's society.  If you think your own anxiety is maybe a bit too much and is getting you down then it would be worth seeking help for this, nothing worse than anxiety ruining your life.
