Swollen lymph on left side of neck

Hi everyone,

my name is Charlotte and over the last few weeks I have been reading some posts on here and I thought I would join in and try and get a bit of reassurance/stories from other users.

Around 3 weeks ago I went to the doctors because I had 2 lumps on the left side of my neck, one hard and one quite soft, located directly underneath; my doctor ordered blood tests which have come back normal except for high bilirubin and low globulin which are being repeated in a month (full blood count, urea and electrolytes etc - don’t think there were any Tumor marker tests) and she also booked me in for an ultrasound which is next Tuesday. But I am really struggling to think of anything positive that could come from hard lymph with no other signs of infection, when tonight I was having a feel and noticed another node on the right side of my neck and I have gone into total melt down. I am on the verge of a panic attack, I’m terrified of dying and leaving my child and baby and I can only think of the worse. Positive stories will help or anyone in the same boat who can advice me. I know I can’t do anything to stop this but I can’t help but feel ‘dirty’? With these hard lumps in my neck, I just want them to go away. I will update as and when. Thanks for listening.

    Hi Riley,

I am so glad to hear that although your lymph node is still swollen and will never go down, that it is fibrous. It sounds as if your consultant is pretty sure that there is nothing for you to worry about. I am glad to hear that he has agreed to carry out a further ultrasound in a few months and hope that you feel more reassured now.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine I definitely feel more reassured, the ENT doctor explained that this is very common and they come across this fairly often. I hope you are well, did you get your ultrasound results back? Xx

  •

    Hi Reilly,

The ultrasound results were ok thanks, but the firroscan showed further liver damage. However, it wasn't a huge change thank goodness.

  • Hi Jolamine

Is that positive news, I do hope so? Also how are you feeling in yourself? Xxx

  • I had another GP appoitnment today (in person) and the GP did say it was probably an infection and they should go down in 1-2 months. I'm a very anxious person, so i never want to correct the doctor but my lumps have been there (with more continually appearing as i started with 1 and now have 6) for now nearly 8 weeks. she took more bloods re the fact i showed her my body was covered in bruises to check my platelet count.

i still just feel very anxious. I know this doctor thinks it's nothing really, but i feel like i know my body pretty well and i just don't feel right. it very well could be an infection or just anemia, but i would just really like to know instead of "probably an infection." i know they're so busy with things, but i really just want to make sure its not serious because i'm so breathless and in pain. it's rubbish.

thank you for replying!! it's a relief to talk about it a bit with people who have experienced similar! x

  • It is good that you saw your GP in person and that your blood work will be reviewed. Hopefully those results will put your mind at ease. Otherwise maybe ask for a second opinion, which you are perfectly entitled to, particularly given how anxiety provoking these things are. My GP asked me to wait for 3 weeks to monitor for any changes before a referral was expedited to ENT. I think it is entirely reasonable that you would like further tests, your bloods should show if you have raised infection markers so dependent on those your GP May want to follow up.

  • Hi,

Has anyone ever had an update since 2021?

I am 28 and also currently 21 weeks pregnant. I felt some swelling/lump on my left side of my neck. Had a telephone appointment with a GP who said probably up due to a boil i had on the back of my neck the same week. Boil now gone as was 3 weeks ago but lymph nodes are still up in my neck. Finally got a face to face appointment after putting in a formal complaint to the surgery as i have extreme health anxiety as my 6 year olds son daddy passed away back in october due to STREP A IGAS.

The GP felt my neck and said she could feel more then one lymph node in my neck but no concerns and to follow up in 6 weeks as they were soft, non tender and under 1cm. She weighed me but i had lost weight according to there scales at surgery shouldnt't i be gaining weight not loosing it in pregnancy?I also had bloods taken 2 weeks ago and was quite big bloods done a few which all came back normal. I went back to the surgery the next day crying because i just want an explanation and shes done me a referal on the 2 week pathway just for reassurance but i just can't stop stressing or worrying like if i go my boy has no parents left at such a young age.

  • Hi Aimee

Like you I was also very anxious on finding the raised lymph node, yours seems very small and whilst it's hard not to feel worried, I think having distraction may help.

I had 2 ultrasounds and later an endoscopy for other reasons. I was told that I had a few raised nodes and the one I first noticed would remain raised.

Best of luck, I hope you get a date through soon xx

  • Hi Riley,

I have been very anxious and just can't stop feeling for it. I don't think there has been 1 day i have not felt for it. I only felt one but i thought it was bigger until i went to the doctor and she said its not one big one its a few small ones.

I am hoping my appointment comes in this week. Cant stop hugging my 6 year old scared for his future

    Thank you xx

  • The lymph gland will enlarge/swell apparently if frequentlh touched, (which is exactly what I was doing).

It is hard not to worry, but it sounds like you caught what ever it early and that your GP is not too concerned. I appreciate that the wait can feel long and lonely so reach out as and when needed.

Hopefully you will hear this week regarding your appointment, thinking of you in the interim xx
