have I got testicular cancer?

Hello I’m 20 years old and I discovered a lump on the top of my testical when I was about 16 or maybe 17 I can’t remember but I was too nervous to go to the doctors but now I finally had the courage to go to the walk in centre to get it checked and the doctor there said he couldn’t feel it he asked me if I had trouble going to the toilet and if it hurt to touch and if it caused me any pain but it hasn’t been a problem at all. it’s a small lump and it hasn’t grown at all as I have been checking it but as it hasn’t changed size, he said he don’t think it’s anything too sinister and advised me to go see me go see my GP so I made an appointment yesterday and the doctor couldn’t feel it either it’s reslly frustrating me as I want a rough idea on what it is but I can definitely feel a lump there so can my girlfriend but why couldn’t they? He said it’s reassuring that they can’t feel it but I’m still really worried because there’s definitely a lump there so he referred me to get an ultrasound so I will have to wait and see. I can’t feel if the lump is attached to the testical or not it feels like it’s just above it? It hasn’t been causing me any problems really I feel completely fine but my main worry is that if it is cancer it’s too late as I have left it so long I’m honestly worried sick anyone have any idea what Is going on?

  • Hi Chandler10111. Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor.

I suspect that what you're feeling is a structure with the tongue twisting name of "epididymis". It's quite natural and you wouldn't be the first person to be concerned on discovering it.  Even if it isn't, you should be aware that lumps on the testicle are usually quite harmless, and the fact that yours has been present for (at least) 3 years without changing is a good sign. Testicular cancer is actually quite rare, and you don't complain of any of its classic symptoms.

Your doctor is taking you seriously by arranging the ultrasound, which is the appropriate scan for the testicles. I would try not to worry since it is unlikely that the scan will show anything seriously wrong, and it's highly likely you'll be reassured that this is nothing to worry about.

  • Hi Chandler,

Telemando has said it all really, so please try to stop worrying about it.

You are getting an ultrasound, which is great, but as Telemando says we'd expect to see growth if it was cancerous (cancer is 'unchecked cell growth' after all).

Let us know how you get on, but please try not to worry.
