Chronic Sore Throat

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice, I've had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine... But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn't.

So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn't shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?

Many thanks all in advance

  • Blimey, all those years and you never knew!  Glad they sorted that Sofia. I am still no further forward and things have got even worse. I tried HRT for the palpitations and throat stuff for 3 months and it made me even worse and the dizziness and side effects were horrendous. It was the last throw of the dice for me.  I doubt I will ever be ok again. I have in the last 6 weeks had palpitations, a very tight throat and chest, cracking and popping in the collarbone area and short of breath for no real reason.  Also had a horrible spreading pustular rash on the side of my left foot which itches like hell then scabs over.  I am scared its the virus, but cannot even get tested as that swab up the nose thing would lodge that big lump I have growing on my inner septum.  I hope you will be ok Sofia.

  • Hello and thank you for posting a question. I am sorry to learn about the sore throat. This must be difficult for you, particularly as it has gone on for some time.

GP's rarely prescribe antibiotics for sore throats. This is because in adults most throat infections are viral and not bacterial. Antibiotics do not work with viral infections. If this was a bacterial throat infection, then I would have expected the symptoms to have come on suddenly and you probably would have felt very unwell, had difficulty swallowing and the glands in your neck would probably have been enlarged. Also, I must admit that while I don't have an in depth knowledge of bacterial throat infections, even without treatment it would have either cleared up or got to a state where you had to seek medical treatment. So although I cannot say for sure what is wrong, I am inclined to think in line with your GP that antibiotics won't help.

Probably the best thing that you can do is try the reflux medication that has been prescribed. It is possible to have reflux without knowing you have it (silent reflux) and this is a common cause of chronic sore throat.  If this does not help then go back to your GP, as this could suggest another cause. If the sore throat is due to reflux I would expect it to improve, but a few people may respond less well to the reflux medication.

I do hope that this gets sorted out for you as I would imagine that it is dragging you down. Please get back to us if you have any other questions You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All  the best,

    Jean

  • Hi Debsy,

I'm sorry to hear of the awful time you are having with all those symptoms. I'm afraid our only advice would be to return to your GP and organise through the surgery another telephone appointment. If you feel concerned about not being heard properly you can talk to a different GP, or discuss this with the practice manager.

Unfortunately any symptoms that are typed into a search engine on the internet will come back with a suggestion of cancer, as there are many multiple symptoms that are involved with a diagnosis like that. But equally there are many illnesses not as serious as cancer that can cause people symptoms. The internet can not replace a professional who can hear your concerns and examine you properly.

I can see from your posts to the forum that you have been concerned about having an undiagnosed cancer for about 18months now. That is a very stressful place to be in mentally and emotionally and so I want to try and reassure you that it is unlikely that you have something as serious as a cancer. I would expect you to be feeling more unwell by now and the various tests would have shown something, but I understand that you need an answer for why you are feeling how you are, so talking to someone would be a good idea.

    Take care Debsy,

    Sarah.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I have had a lot of tests, and still awaiting an ENT appointment about the lump growing inside my nose on my septum that came up in February.  The palpitations are worse and I get so tight in my chest and it keeps clicking. I did have costocondritis in 2019 but not sure if it's that.  I also have a dermatology appointment in 2 weeks about the odd rash on my foot.  It is a very scary time for me, but thank you for your kind words.

  • Hia.
So many people on here with the same story. I have the exact same one as you and many others. My throat started to be really painful at the end fe/beg march. My tongue and lips are swollen and my mouth is burning. Worse at night.
Saw ENT twice who told me acid reflux but they know its not that. I've followed all their instructions but still have it. They did an endescope down my nose but looked no further than the area around the back of my throat, not down my throat. They said, despite being very red and swollen, all was 'normal'. I asked how red, sore and swollen for 9 months is normal? No answer.
I've also seen 2 dentists and an Oral Surgeon. The dentists were concerned at what they saw. The burning goes down my oesophogus and spreads into my lungs. ENT refused to check there. Anyway, I bought myself an endescope after the first scope and looked into my throat (only the top) and what did I see there? Large yellowish/red blisters or cysts, particularly behind my tonsils. I told them the next time I could see these things and finally got a name for them. They're lymphoid follicles and are nothing to do with acid reflux. Some of them are over 1cm across. They've never gone away.
I also sweat profusely at night and my hair started to fall out a lot. I suggested that these symptoms look like radiation poisoning symptoms. The GPs, ENT and oral surgery consulatants all agreed that they did. Now that I know soooo many people have this. Unexplained sore thoats, swollen lips and burning mouth and tongue etc and often starting at the beginning of March. I started to wonder what happened around this time?
I'll tell you. The roll-out of 5g. I also tested for high haematocrit level which indicates polycithemia or hypoxia. Thickened blood.
    Go figure.
Its a long battle and nowhere near getting any answers. The pain goes on. I'd send you photos but I can't attach.
    Good luck.

  • Hello yes I have had a sore throat since Nov 19 I have seen ent nothing found had endoscope to check still nothing but since march 20 I have had an enlarged uvula. Dangling low onto my tongue i i ha told docs several times and they have referred me to ent. I now have 2 ent referrals on going and no dates due to good old Corona virus. I'm desparatelu worrying now this is is cancer but as I can't get any diagnosis I feel I'm lost as to what to do. I feel let down by NHS .

  • Well I have to say in a way it's been nice to come across this thread whilst googling. (Though that's not a good thing.) I just want some reassurance really, Iv had a small pea size moveable lump in the side of my neck for about 6 weeks now. Had 2 phone appointments with my GP regarding it. It hasn't changed in size etc. Within 4 weeks of both GP appointments I had 2 weeks of constant neck pain from the left round the back to the right. It finally cleared up last week and hasn't come back. I'm hoping that was just muscular of some sort. In the same time frame I have had sore gums and sore teeth, and sore palate behind my top teeth, I have been to the dentist and the dentist has said it's gingivitis. Also the last 2 weeks or so I have had throat pain(although mild) on the left side of my throat that generally only comes in the evening and on and off not constant. Also I have had the same with ear pain the same side on and off but not every day. Again same side on my tongue it feels sore, my partner seems to think nothing is there.  I have noticed that my throat looks a little red and my right tonsil is bigger than my left. Obviously everything on google points at tonsil cancer and it's absolutely terrifying me as I'm only 30 and have 3 children under 8. I have a GP face to face appointment next week and I'm so scared she's gonna say it's something serious. I have lost about a stone in weight since September but it seems to have stabilised itself over the last few weeks. I mean all these on and off come and go symptoms does this still mean it could be cancer. I'm so scared. I do suffer with health anxiety but I don't want anything to be brushed off with just this! Thankyou to anybody that reads this. Xxx

also, with my tonsil I realised that when I open my mouth to have a look I leave my tongue down and the right one looks bigger but if I stick my tongue out the other tonsil pops out and they both look the same size.... I think. Don't know if this suggests anything normal... I hope xx

  • Here to also report as a sufferer of a "Chronic Sore Throat" since April 2020, so 8 months now. For me, mine recovered twice for 3 weeks, but came back with avengeance each time. Red, sore throat, single tonsil stone that comes and goes on the same tonsil, headaches common and generally increased fatigue. It initially started as a sinus/chest infection, post nasal drip meant a lot of coughing up mucus, my brother is also suffering from a continued ear infection after a similar sinus infection.

I don't have acid reflux and anti-histamines don't help. Cold/Flu satchets like Lemsip or store brand etc, actually make me feel quite better but only momentarily. I'm in my 30s, never smoked, and barely drink alcohol. Waking up is the worst, I guess because of the lack of throat lubrication over night, it's the most painful sore throat I've ever had.

Blood tests have so far shown nothing, as they are all "normal". Doctor said they will refer to ENT, but atm waiting lists are very long because of covid & vaccinations, plus lack of staff.

I think what also happened in March/April 2020 was everyone started lockdown & working from home, we got less Vit D, less exercise and less fresh air in some cases, and everyone's anxiety increased. I think this is a recipe for a weakened immune system that stubborn viral and bacterial infections have taken hold of in certain people who are unlucky or suspectible to infection. I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Insomnia, so my immune system is even less robust.

I'm a bit concerned about cancer, but from what I read on here, things like tonsil cancer do not heal, and I'd expect to have lumps or enlarged lymph nodes, neither of which I have. My lymph nodes are only slightly raised very infrequently and I've not had a fever.

Ideally I could have a swab to detect if its bacterial so I could try the correct antibiotics, but GPs haven't done any face to face appointments still for a while now, so continued suffering it is.

  • Hi Gagamaru. Welcome to the forum.

Like you, I have chronic sore throat which is worse in the mornings.  I've been through an ENT workup, including MRI and endoscopy/biopsy under general anaesthetic.  And like you, I suffer from fibromyalgia.

When this all started, I had a huge number of blood tests; my GP literally left no stone unturned to find the cause of my issues.  My blood tests and my ENT workup all proved to be boringly normal.  The sore throat started a few months after the appearance of my fibromyalgia symptoms.

Sore throat appears to be a common issue with fibromyalgia, with some sufferers reporting that it last for  years. To eliminate the possibility of gastric reflux, I'm having treatment and taking other steps to prevent it - but these haven't changed my symptoms.  I am now 90% convinced that my sore throat is simply one of the many undesirable features of fibromyalgia.  That might be the case for you, too.

  • Thanks for the reply Telemando,

I have considered Fibromyalgia as the cause, however the only two things that deter me fully from it; are that for me this chronic sore throat started with a bad sinus & chest infection. Secondly I have 1 or two tonsil stones frequently, which I find strange that Fibromyalgia would cause, but obviously I'm not discounting it fully either.

Also I'm 9 years into Fibromyalgia symptoms and this is the first time I've suffered a persistent sore throat. It could be that Fibromyalgia is the original cause from last year, or it possibly could also be a situation of not being able to recover from a different primary issue due to Fibromyalgia.

I am also somewhat expecting to go through many tests and find nothing, as I've read in many others replies, so my expectations are low for finding answers.
