Cervical ectropion and colposcopy

I was first diagnosed with a cervical ectropion last year during pregnancy due to spotting. On two separate occasions during pregnancy two different doctors told me I had an ectropion and didn't seem worried.

6 weeks after having my baby i had my first depo shot. A week after that I have had light pink spotting on and off evey since. I went back to the doctors last week and said I have got myself really worried about cc. She offered to look at my cervix which I agreed to and she said the ectropion is definitely still there and bleeds on contact, and has referred me for a colposcopy. I am now worried sick that I am going to be told I have cervical cancer, but my last smear was in 2016 and was normal so surely things can't be that bad?

I've made myself so sick with worry that I have now been prescribed diazepam and a mild anti depressant. I just sit looking at my 2 young children and feel so worried. My youngest is only 3 months old. Cc was never mentioned during pregnancy. Really need some reassurance as my anxiety is through the roof.

Thank you

  • hello I know this was posted in Feb but I have just had the same and waiting on an urgent referral as we speak! How did you get on? X

  • In the end they did a urgent referral to gynaecology as there was such a long wait for colpscopy. The specialist looked and acouple weeks later lasered the ectropian and that was it. She didnt even mention cc and just said an ectropian is common if u have been on the pill for a long time or during pregnancy.i have just had a smear test done and nothing was said about anything looking sore etc so I assume the ectropian has gone. Just waiting the dreaded smear test results.

Looking back I think my hormones were so high and low due to having my daughter that I just didnt deal with things rationally at all. I hadn't even had a worrying smear result but in my head I convinced myself the ectropian was something nasty. The depo didnt so me any favours either so am off of that and much happier on the pill.

    Hope you are okay? Xx

  • I'm in a similar situation to you! Lower back pain, cramping, struggling to completely empty my bladder and had a smear last week to be told it was red, bloody etc so been referred and I'm also a total mess! Being sick with worry etc! When is your appointment? X

  • I'm sorry to read ur in same boat, its terrifying :( I still dont know how long il be waiting :( did they give you an estimate?  Dont google cause youl be worse. Iv stopped googling cause I was driving myself insane. Did they test u for urine infection?x

  • My appointment is next Monday for a coloscopy! Dreading it :(

I've been on Google too and that is what I think has caused me so much anxiety and worry! I keep fearing the worst!

I did a urine sample but I have to go back and do another one this week, they said it was fine but had some blood in (most likely from my smear) so they need another sample.

    Hope you're ok x

  • Hi, I've just read on your post about IBS

I am wondering if I am suffering with this too!

I've had some cramping, loose stools after eating, then other times I can't go the toilet, and (sorry) but farting a bit too!! Sometimes I go for a wee, have a wee but then feel like I've not completely emptied my bladder!

Could this be IBS symptoms? I'm wondering if I've brought it on through stress as I'm due to have a coloscopy next week and fearing the worst!

    Thanks x

  • It sounds very similar, IBS can come on at any time. Its worth mentioning it though just to rule everything out but sounds very similar to what I get so fingers crossed. I hope all goes well at the appointment you should get some answers that day . X

  • Hello,

I'm so glad to have found this thread, I'm 24 and have been having issues for years now. Pain during intercourse and after, heavy periods and discharge, bleeding heavy etc

I saw a doctor back in April last year and was told I had an ectoption and that was it. Literally nothing was done! .

I've had to pester and pester and I was referred for a colposcopy in October last year,, but here we are, now nearly February and I still haven't got an appointment! I called out patients to chase it up and was told the waiting list was 30 week! So it's clear they don't seem bothered, where as I'm a worrying reck! Cc runs in my family. And my mum had abnormal cells at 18 only picked up because she fell pregnant with me.

No matter what I do or say the doctors are refusing to let me have a smear as I'm 24! But I'm so cross by this.

I'm now at the stage where I have constant pain in my lower abdomen and back needing pain killers a lot of the time and I've now been bleeding pretty much constantly for about 4 months. I used to be on the pill and have been using fh patch for about 5 years. I don't want to sound to much information but the bleeding I'm having isn't like period type bleeding, it's more think pink blood with clots. I'm so worried about CC and it's clear the doctors don't care because I'm only 24!

    Any advice? Xx

  • I am so sorry the doctors have been so un supportive, when I first contacted my GP I was referred to a Gynae consultant which needed to happen within a 2 week window I was advised.  Have you thought about going private an initial consultation varies in price but approximately £300 and they would advise you then. I know you should not have to but its an option.

Are you able to go to your local family planning clinic for a smear? May be an option.

  • Hi , I have these same symptoms. Feeling of needing to wee like a urine infection. How did you get on?

  • [@vixx]‍ how did u get on x

  • Hello,

I'm relived I have found this thread as it has been something that has been worrying me for a while now. I was seen by a doctor in March 2020 and was told it was an ectropion and referred to a gynaecologist at the hospital. My appointment is in June 2021, 15 months after I was referred. The doctor did a visual exam but no swabs etc were taken. I'm still getting symptoms and experience spot bleeding most days. I'm worried as it has been so long that it may have progressed if it was something more sinister. I am under 25 so have never had a smear. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • I'm sorry you are worrying me, it's such a horrible time. I have no advice to offer like a lot of these ladies on here. I'm awaiting my appointment next week with gynae. All I would suggest if you ask your GP to refer you again if you still have symptoms and are worried. No one should have to live with any symptoms or worry , June 2021 is some time ago and u think another referral is completely acceptable push for it xx

  • Hi

My daughter is 17 and after lots of pain and bleeding, many different pills, pain and bleeding after sex, they've just discovered she has an ectropian. Do they cause pain ?

The GP said not. We're waiting for a scan and a colposcopy. She's so upset and way too young to be worrying about this. She's also losing her hair, is constantly Ill with sore throat, awaiting a tonsilectomy, and chronic fatigue, low iron. I'm at a loss and trying to keep upbeat for her but can feel her pain and worry.

  • Hiya

Sorry to hear about what your daughter is going through. Contraception with certain hormones can cause ectropion. My doctor said even pregnancy can cause it due to all the extra hormones, but once you give birth your body then goes back to the normal balance of hormones...where as with regular use of contraception we aren't allowing our the ectropion to heal up...my doctor advised me to go for a pill that has one hormone in not two because it will lesson the chances of ectropion but i still haven't done this because I'm not good with taking tablets as I'll forget and don't wanna become pregnant.

For me, I had no pain with sex. I did lose a little weight at first due to the stress of it and I also weren't eating much. All I would see was streaks of blood when I'd wipe after sex at first and it did become more over time.

When I went for the colposcopy I couldn't help but to look on the screen and my cervix was gushing blood even by the slightest touch of the gauze pad thing and solution that they used to clean my cervix. It was a horrible sight...very frightening but is common with ectropion and/or hpv strains. In the end they did use silver nitrate sticks to help stop the bleeding and I never experienced the bleeding with sex since. The silver nitrate and other treatment can be an option for her with the ectropion if it is causing hassle to her daily life.

i had my year follow up on 1st oct this year which was just a normal smear and i am freeeeeee of hpv (CIN 1) so it cleared up by itself after a year and now I don't have to go back for a smear until 3years time.

Tell her to try her best not to worry, and to think positive as stressing will only make things worst.

Last year i did a lot of research to find out what I could do to treat the hpv from home using natural remedies whilst waiting for my follow up appointment and I found out that shiitake mushrooms are good for helping hpv clear up. I found these tablets at Holland and Barretts. They are called pukka mushroom gold organic which contain shiitake mushrooms. I took these almost everyday since my colposcopy last year. She can subscribe and have them sent out monthly and that way she will get a discount or she can look out the penny sale.

Also floradix liquid form is great for low iron as I suffer with low iron in general. Deficiency can also cause hair loss and fatigue so maybe requesting a full blood test would be good.

    is she getting much sleep?

  • Thankyou so much, she was but now she's just so worried about  it all so having vivid dreams and struggling b to stay asleep.

Thanks for all your advice x

  • You're very welcome.
Kalms are also good. They are herbal tablets sold in supermarkets or chemist. That helps with short term stress and worries and sleeping problems. I took them together so I know its allowed but just for a peace of mind for you and her both still feel free to ask a pharmacist or your gp if they can be taken together before doing so.

Its a horrible feeling to be uncertain about something like this but I have her in my prayers. Please update me if she don't mind.

  • Hi Jody2020 and Kezzles07,

I hope you don't mind me jumping in quickly but I noticed shiitake mushrooms being mentioned so I just wanted to share some information we have about this.

Although there have been some promising results from the studies that have looked at whether mushrooms can help the immune system, there is still currently no evidence that any type of mushroom can cure or prevent cancer.

    Kind regards,

  • Hiya.
No that's fine. We are all here to help and encourage one another so everyone is welcome to add some input.

Where I researched it, it was there to help treat CIN 1...a mild type of HPV which does not generally turn into cancer. It wasn't stated that it can cure cancer. To my knowledge, HPV itself isn't cancer but a precursor to cancer depending on the type.

The young lady has what I have also cervical ectropion which can be caused by contraception and excessive hormones which I spoke a bit about my experience of.

By Gods grace she will be fine and it'll have nothing to do with the C word.

I just like to share anything that I feel helped me...and it's for others to then research further into it and decide whether they feel it'll be beneficial to them.

  • Thankyou so much for your kind words. All so helpful and yes I will get back to you. I do think it has something to do with excessive hormones definitely. She has all the symptoms

    Thanks again

    Sending love x
