Cervical ectropion and colposcopy

I was first diagnosed with a cervical ectropion last year during pregnancy due to spotting. On two separate occasions during pregnancy two different doctors told me I had an ectropion and didn't seem worried.

6 weeks after having my baby i had my first depo shot. A week after that I have had light pink spotting on and off evey since. I went back to the doctors last week and said I have got myself really worried about cc. She offered to look at my cervix which I agreed to and she said the ectropion is definitely still there and bleeds on contact, and has referred me for a colposcopy. I am now worried sick that I am going to be told I have cervical cancer, but my last smear was in 2016 and was normal so surely things can't be that bad?

I've made myself so sick with worry that I have now been prescribed diazepam and a mild anti depressant. I just sit looking at my 2 young children and feel so worried. My youngest is only 3 months old. Cc was never mentioned during pregnancy. Really need some reassurance as my anxiety is through the roof.

Thank you

  • hello I know this was posted in Feb but I have just had the same and waiting on an urgent referral as we speak! How did you get on? X

  • In the end they did a urgent referral to gynaecology as there was such a long wait for colpscopy. The specialist looked and acouple weeks later lasered the ectropian and that was it. She didnt even mention cc and just said an ectropian is common if u have been on the pill for a long time or during pregnancy.i have just had a smear test done and nothing was said about anything looking sore etc so I assume the ectropian has gone. Just waiting the dreaded smear test results.

Looking back I think my hormones were so high and low due to having my daughter that I just didnt deal with things rationally at all. I hadn't even had a worrying smear result but in my head I convinced myself the ectropian was something nasty. The depo didnt so me any favours either so am off of that and much happier on the pill.

    Hope you are okay? Xx

  • Hi all.
a few months ago I was having painful sex with my partner. I went to the doctors and he saw that I had a cervical erosion. Sent a referral to see a gynaecologist. Saw the gyno and he said it was a variation of normal.
I have been on the pill years but decided to come off to try help get rid of the erosion.
I had a baby 2 years ago and had a erosion during pregnancy which I guess went on it's own after my baby was born.

My question is did anyone have any other symptoms other than bleeding?

I keep getting what feels like urine infections (without the infection) and a fullness feeling inside of that makes sense!! And also lots of discharge too (I'm up to date on smears and have been Sti checked and have nothing)

sorry for maybe too much info but have felt my cervix and it feels huge and swollen.
My doctor has referred me back to the gyno to have the erosion treated so waiting on that.
It's been like this for about 3 months. Has anyone's erosion healed on its own and how long did it take?
It's all really getting me down and sex is a Nono as it hurts too much.
Had a ultrasound and all normal but really hurt when she did the internal as it obviously put pressure on the erosion.
    sorry for the long post

    vix x

  • Hello, I just had a drs app today as I've been having cramping and lower back pain.they are my only symptoms, she.did and internal and said that she could see hormonal changes on my womb and that it was raw. I've been referred on for a colposcopy but I'm a mess thinking its cervical cancer. Would this we similar to entropion? I'm just so scared

  • Hello, this sounds very similar. Try not to worry I know that is easier said than done. I had a diagnosis before Christmas and they said it was erosion of the cervix.  They did a biopsy during the Colposcopy which came back ok, I also had a smear too. The worst thing I did was Google my symptoms and worked myself up, try to  keep calm hopefully your appointment will come through in 14days.  Look after yourself.  Xxx

  • Thank you so much, when I heard hormonal changes I just lost my mind. I have no bleeding or tenderness so I just hope it's nothing serious. My anxiety has gone through the roof. I'm so happy your results were good xxx

  • Sorry for another message but I started having leg pain lastnight do you no if upper leg pain is part of ectropion? DiD you have cramping?xx

  • I do get cramping but I also suffer with IBS very mildly so it could be that with the stress . Are you up to date with your smears ? To be honest whilst I was waiting for the results it was easy to imagine all sorts of aches and pains. Have they said how long you have to wait for an appointment ?

  • I too have ibs!! I thought that's what it was at the beginning of all this :( it's the leg pain thats throwing me!! I had a smear at the end of 2019 and all was clear so not due again till 2022. They havent said when I could be called and it's hard to know with all the rules atm. Stress is really getting to me.my head is pounding since it all started :(

  • I would either go back to the GP to say the symptoms have changed or ring the hospital to see where you are on the list. But try nit to worry if your smear was clear and only a year ago thats a really good sign .x

  • I'm in a similar situation to you! Lower back pain, cramping, struggling to completely empty my bladder and had a smear last week to be told it was red, bloody etc so been referred and I'm also a total mess! Being sick with worry etc! When is your appointment? X

  • I'm sorry to read ur in same boat, its terrifying :( I still dont know how long il be waiting :( did they give you an estimate?  Dont google cause youl be worse. Iv stopped googling cause I was driving myself insane. Did they test u for urine infection?x

  • My appointment is next Monday for a coloscopy! Dreading it :(

I've been on Google too and that is what I think has caused me so much anxiety and worry! I keep fearing the worst!

I did a urine sample but I have to go back and do another one this week, they said it was fine but had some blood in (most likely from my smear) so they need another sample.

    Hope you're ok x

  • I have been getting severe itching in my bladder area with regular utis but also have the situation that I'm about to explain below...

I had a very similar situation to this. I had a normal smear in October 2018, and then May 2020 I started to get spotting after sex. Contacted my gp who tried to tell me over a telephone consultation that it was due to the patch but i was in disagreement with her because i know my body and had been using the patch since 2017 with no problems. Spotting due to patch would usually occur within first 3months not 3years down the line. Because I was in disagreement with her she told me to keep a diary of it and the spotting became worst so another doctor called me in months later for an examination where she pointed out cervical ectropion and referred me for a colposcopy  because apparently it and cervical cancer look very similar to the naked eye.

I eventually got an appointment and when I went, OMG i cried. I thought I was dying just from looking at my cervix on the camera how the acidy substance they used to highlight abnormal areas made my cervix change colour so I knew there were abnormal areas and then the way my cervix was gushing blood when they gave it the slightest touch with their medical instruments.
I had to have three areas of my cervix removed for a biopsy and the results came back stating that I have CIN1 which is basically a type of HPV that apparently isn't likely to turn into cancer so I was asked to come back a year later for a follow up which I did in October 2021, and it was just a normal smear test. I am still waiting for my smear results (pray for me ladies) to see if the CIN1  has cleared up on its own but now I have noticed a painless lump in what I think would be classed as my lower groin area...like in between my legs in the crease between my inner thigh and my labia area. The lump is fixed and doesnt move when touched. It doesn't hurt and isn't puss filled.  I am worrying because research shows that it could be due to cancer of a reproductive organ. It also shows that it could be due to less serious things but due to my history of problems I can't help but to get worried. I am a mother of three and don't want to leave my babies.

  • Oh yes, turns out that the lump in my groin area was due to shaving and has now gone...weeks ago. Follow up results were negative so i got the all clear. Thank God!!
