Breast referral

I have been sent for a 2ww referral after finding that my left nipple has become inverted. I noticed it over the last few months but because it sometimes came out I just though it was a bit strange. I am still waiting for my appointment and I am getting a bit worried. I have read lots of people's posts and i realise everyone is different. I do not have any lumps or swellings, just my nipple that lies flat.has anyone else experienced this? I really don't know what I'm asking as I think it's a bit of panic if I'm honest.love to hear from anyone out there who has felt the same.x

  • Hi there,

cant think of anyone who wouldn’t panic a bit when faced with this. When I was given the news of my breast cancer I did panic as at that point it’s the great unknown, I had no symptoms, my DCIS was picked up by the screeening program and my invasive cancer picked up only after surgery.

It gets better once you know what you’re dealing with, right now all you know is that you have an inverted nipple that doctors want to check out. That doesn’t mean you have cancer - it’s not cancer until they say it’s cancer.

Try to focus on the positive, something that’s been bothering you for months is now going to be looked at

Hopefully there are others on here who have had an inverted nipple and can answer questions your relating to that.

    take care x

  • Hello, well....your in the right place, we can all identify with the panic...I was diagnosed with bc a few days before Christmas....funnily enough the waiting was the worse bit! Once I knew what I was dealing I just got on with it ( I'm not saying I didn't have my drama queen moments....god! I had plenty of those)  you did absolutely the right thing, the clinic will get to the bottom of it, they are very thorough, you will be in good hands....just remember to take deep breaths when you find yourself on dr google and close his tab! He isn't of any use to you at all....stick with this forum....you will get more sense out of us... xxx

  • Hi Aquariusgirl.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor, and I'm also a bloke.

You need to bear in mind that a referral is not a diagnosis, and although it's scary to get a referral, on average 9 out 10 of "urgent" referrals turn out not to be cancer.  There are also a huge number of possible reasons for an inverted nipple, and cancer is just one of them.

So, please try to remain optimistic (difficult, I know) and please don't assume the worst.  With cancer (or a possible cancer diagnosis) it's often better to "cross that bridge when you get to it."

  • Thank you so much for answering me. I am sorry to hear of your story. I bet it was a shock.you sound so positive and I only hope I can be as brave if faced with the worst news. I wish you strong healing powers and admire your honesty. Xx

  • Just a update....wanted to let you all know i had a my appointment after 14 days on a cancellation. I seen a lovely doctor who made me have a mammogram and ultra sound. I was very scared and nervous.my results came back less than a hour and although the found a small cyst everything was clear. I am estatic and so relieved. Dr said my milk ducts are large and sometimes the nipple changes through the years. I just wanted others to know this as I didn't find much on inverted nipples and ones I did was worrying

Thank you for all your lovely support and I send love and strength to everyone of you.xx
