Breast total duct excision

Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out.  So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

  • Hi,

How are you doing, its been a while you signed in here but I just wanted to reach out to you seeing you also had a baby to tend to while dealing with this dreadful disease. I have a 3 month old and will be having my op next week.

How did you manage with the baby and you treatment?

    How did your treatment go?

    How are you doing now?

Hope to hear back from you soon.

    Cheers xxx

  • Yes I was a little sore for a few days following the procedure and struggled to find a comfortable position in bed to sleep but honestly nothing bad and I’m such a wimp with pain!  I tested in bed for a day or two. Then was ok. After a 2 weeks I was pretty much back to normal... driving etc but still in very supportive bra. But I waited to do running/ jumping and heavy lifting excercise for 6 weeks.

  • Thanks for the reply. You have definitely made me feel easier about it. Glad you are good now. Look after yourself xxx

  • Wow. You really have been through it.

Thank you for replying to me. My op is 13th June.

I am worried about it (although Littlestar78 has helped with this) but was struggling to speak about it as I feel guilty worrying so much when I am one of the lucky ones not having to deal with the diagnosis that yourself and so many others have had to deal with.

You sound so strong and so brave to talk so freely and positively to others about your fight.

Thanks for welcoming me and for your advice.

    Take Care

    Jo

  • Hi Littlestar78,

It is great to hear that your results came back clear. Must have been a massive relief i can imagine. Wish you all the best xx

  • Hi canarijaune,

How are you doing, I replied your previous post above, please have you had a chance to read through.

    Thanks.

  • Hi LisaR,

How did your operation go? I haven’t been online for a while.

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you for taking time to reply to me. It took longer to recover from the second operation as it was a bigger operation. About 2 months it took for me to be able to move my arm properly. However now that it has been 6 months post op I have full movement and no pain and I can do any sort of activity. My pathology results showed high grade DCIS and stage2 IDC with no lymph node involvement. Currently I am on tamoxifen.

I am sorry to hear about your loss and also sorry to hear that you had breast cancer. I am new to this site so I am not sure if it is possible to message on privately here but I would like find more about how your past 8 years have been and what type of breast cancer you had during this period. Take care and would like to keep in touch.

  • Hi AWW,

My baby is now a 26 month old monster toddler :) I am doing better and having regular checks with my oncologist and surgeon. I am currently on tamoxifen.

I actually couldn’t manage anything within the two months post op hence I had to ask for help so I was lucky my mum came to stay with us. My husband and my mum helped me go through the worst as otherwise I wouldnt have been able to look after my daughter. I hope you also have some support as you will need it.

Surgery was the hardest part of the treatment and then I had radiotherapy, luckily I didnt have to have chemotheraphy.

I also went back to work mid March on a phased return but since last week I moved back to my full time hours.

I feel more tired than before and dealing with some side effects of tamoxifen but it is currently managable.

I will be thinking of you next week. Please keep us posted.

    Hi Canarijaune,

It sounds as if you are doing really well. I'm glad to hear that your mum and hubby have both helped you out with the baby. It took me all the energy I had to look after my two at that age and, that was when I was in the whole of my health!

You will naturally be tired if you are now back to work full time and, then dealing with the wee one when you arrive home. You need to be careful not to overdo things - just listen to your body.

What sort of side-effects are you getting with Tamoxifen? I'm glad to hear that they are currently manageable.

Yes, there is a private messaging facility on this site. You have to send a friend request and, this has to be accepted, before you can communicate in this way. You will find instructions on how to do this under 'Help using our Forum' at the top left hand margin of this page.

I hope that you will find your energy levels building up, now that your radiotherapy is behind you.

Look forward to hearing from you and, happy to give a potted version of the past 9 years.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
