Breast total duct excision

Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out.  So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

  • Hello Littlestar78,

I also had nipple discharge amd went to my GP with this symptom. They referred me to breast clinic and then they did ultrasound there but couldn’t see anything suspicious. They said they still would prefer to do total duct excision to make sure what is causing the brown discharge. I had the operation on 1st October and the results came back two weeks after. Recovery was better than I expected and within a week I went back to work. Unfortunately the results came back with some bad news. They found a 6mm invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and some high grade DCIS so they couldn’t get clear margins. I had to have another operation on 8th November with an attempt for the surgeon to remove more cancer and also sentinel node biopsy to see if it was spread to lymph nodes. I’m 36 years old with a 21 month old daughter so for me since the diagnosis life has changed a lot and I’m trying to be patient with everything happening. I hope you will get better results after your op and it is easy to say but try ro distract yourself as much as you can with the things you enjoy doing. Whether it is good news or bad news all we can do is to be as strong as possible. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to get in touch with me. Happy to help in anyway I can.

  • Hi Canarijaune,

Sorry to hear aboyt your bad news. I am having my opperation next Friday. Very nervous to say the least. I had nipple discharge and when they tested it, it contained red bllod cells. My scan didnt show anything up either. Hopefully the results wont take to long to come back.

    Hi Canarijaune,

I'm sorry to hear that you weren't so lucky.  How are you feeling now that you have had the second operation? Have you had your pathology results back from then?

A cancer diagnosis of any kind does indeed change our lives, particularly when you have such a young daughter. We only get the one life to live and a positive approach makes all the difference at this stage.

I lost my mum to breast cancer 21 years ago and, have had 2 bouts of breast cancer myself in the past 8 years. Fortunately, treatment has made tremendous headway in the interim and, there is no comparison between what my mum had and what I have experienced myself. At that stage it was almost taken for granted that people died from cancer. Now many of us are living with it.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi

My nipple is slightly inverted now but it really doesn’t look bad at all, I barely have a scar. I was expecting a lot worse. The rest of my breast looks normal.

    Hope that helps

  • I have been suffering with bleeding from the left nipple for some time. Cancer was ruled out early on and cysts on my milk ducts diagnosed. After a number of visits, I am booked in for the same procedure to remove them. I'm 36. Never had any surgery before. Putting a brave face on but deep down I've been worrying. Thank you for speaking about your procedure, it has made me feel a little easier about things. Can you tell me what the recovery time is please? You say you didn't have too much pain? xx

    Hi JoJoMc,

Welcome to our community, although I'm sorry for the reason that has caused you to join us. I'm glad to hear that you are feeling a little easier about things now.

It is worrying when you have never had any surgery before, but you will be fine. I was first diagnosed 9 years ago and had a lumpectomy, followed by Tamoxifen. A year later I found another lump in the same breast. This time I had a double mastectomy, followed by 6 years of Letrozole. I stopped taking this in July 2017.

You will find all of your surgical team will be very sympathetic to your case, very helpful, professional and pleasant. You ask how long the recovery time is. This varies from person to person and, will depend on age, state of general health, grade of cancer, type of cancer, etc. If I remember correctly, I think that it took me about 6 weeks after my lumpectomy.

As for pain, I was sore the first couple of days, but it was all quite doable. I was kept sufficiently well medicated to control this pain.

Do you have a date for your surgery yet?

I hope that it all goes well. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
